You can use the rotary knob to precisely adjust any previously touched slider...

Oh that’s good to know! Though in our use case where we’re working with 4-5 channels, I think that would become cumbersome very quickly

@@FireFaceFilms I hardly touch anything on the fly with this device, just have a few presets for different mikes setups and matching armed tracks & only press record (thx 32 bits!-) and then do everything in post (documentaries) but it sounds from your needs you would be better off with a Mix-Pre 6 or 10...

Man I wish I had this video like 2 years ago 😭😭 this is like a master class of the X8. I even came to the same janky solution for time code. It took like 7 shoots and so many events to get there but I love this Device. Similar setup I have some lithium Energizer batteries in it but I use type C power delivery for it.
Ive had an error where i corrupted my sound and thats because i used a shit micro sd card being lazy and didnt wanna clear off my main one.
There might be hope for us, i believe they released a device with open source time code so we could get it in a firmware update one day.
I will say additionally it doesnt like cheap xlr cables, i got one stuck and had to deconstruct it. i learnt my lesson

As much as I’d love to see it, I don’t think proper timecode will be coming to this device…now we just wait and see what Tascam will do next. Orrrr we move on to what works in the mean time!

I love mine. I have many recorders by now, including the F8nPro, F3 and several others, but the X8 is probably the one I would keep were I pushed to keep only one. So versatile... I got a second hand Atomos Ultrasync Blue a good while back, and it was one very good purchase. A few weeks ago I added the Atomos One, and with this combo I can timesync with virtually any other timecode systems. I use the Rode Wireless Pro, I jamsync the timecode from there into the Atomos Ultrasync One, then all my devices have timecode, including the Rode, the iPad slate, my two cameras, Zoom F2BTs, Zoom F3, Zoom F8nPro, Tascam X8...
One question: if you have timecode on one of your audio tracks, how do you get the timecode out and put the TC into your metadata? Davinci Resolve seems not to support audio timecode if in an audio file. It works on video files only. So I guess you use some third party app to convert your audio tracks, right?

TLDR, I use the Timecode Tentacle app on Windows. Converts the the LTC track into metadata for the rest of the tracks. I do have a video about it so you can see the whole process!

@@FireFaceFilms Yes, I do use the Tentacle app, but I think Davinci Resolve has become better reading TC from audio over time and it is faster for my workflow. So I only use it if absolutely needed. The main limitation I find is that DR is not able to update timecode from audio files, only audio inside a video file. They should fix this. But now that I use Atomos Blue there is virtually no need for that. I have issues with some of my beloved cameras though, E.g. the Canon M50, which is still a great 1080p camera does not record true stereo, there is a significant bleed between L&R channels. So with that camera I either have TC on both channels, or neither :) Same issue with mics that offer a safety channel.

Good video. Never used Timecodes. Solo acoustic musician who just wants to record my gigs. Claps seem to work fine, even no claps just wave forms seem to work out. Don't want to spend any unnecessary (to me) time learning anything new, lol. Just want to work on my songs and playing and hit record every now and then.
I have 4 outputs from my live mixer (bose t8) that I want to plug into a recorder. Don't do any post work except to adjust volumes. Want a pure live sound without adding anything. Then input those 4 tracks into Davinci Resolve and make a movie for youtube. Mostly for Demos and sharing.
I want it better than what I've been doing with just the feed from my camera's audio card, which is how I've been doing it for my current recordings. Being a musician, I'm all about audio "quality." Not speed or anything. Just does it sound really good.
Is this a good choice you think? Too much...too little? Something that has better audio? Money is not the deciding factor (to a point, lol.) Audio quality is. Ease of use for a luddite brain might help too :)

I would just get the Zoom F6 as it has 6 XLR inputs (room to grow in the future) and (something I forgot to touch on in the video) records to regular SD cards, which I find to be way more convenient. Really truly, as long as you’re getting instrument levels right at the head of the recordings, again the Zoom F6 would be the better pick.

@@FireFaceFilms thanks for the quick reply!
My recording outputs on my Bose t8s mixer are all 1/4". I have 4 of them. So, I'll probably need to go with the f8 or even the Tascam x8...because they both have combo input jacks.
Not taking price into account, which do you think might be better in my situation?
Oh, and going into the weeds a little...The F8 has 2 mini xlr main outputs. Whould there be a problem running those outs into powered speakers and using the whole setup as a mixer AND a recorder. Where I could send a mix to the powered speakers and another mix to the recording unit? That would be kinda cool if possible.
