I came here for the hook info but I’m so glad I got the information about hook setting. I’ve really struggled with getting too excited and yanking it right out of the fishes mouth
Great stuff. I love the fact that a lot of your advice is really based on common sense and experience. You need to bless us with a video discussing how important time on the water is. I've got five decades, and I'm still learning! Just can't get enough. Thanks for taking the time to share with us all. We really appreciate it! Tight lines!
The video was cut short. I am already starting to see a difference in my fishing success from watching your videos, im subscribed so i see almost everyone you put out. Thank you fir your tutorials sir, i really appreciate it.
Well Randy,I trust your opinion better than any and this settles it. Word has it that the hookup ratio is much better with a straight shank hooks when compared to off set or ewg hooks
Personally, the heaviest setup I fish with is a St. Croix 7’ MH Premier (closer to most companies’ H ratings, it’s quite stiff and fast and can handle lures well above the rated 1oz limit) with 15lb AbrazX on it. That’s the heavy jig and big live bait rod, as well as the Pike rod. Because of that, because I’m mostly using line of 6 to 15 pounds and no rods capable of breaking those lines at full bend, I always use the smallest and lightest wire hooks I can get away with. The one exception is probably the Owner 7/0 Oversize Worm Hook I use in the gooseberry Ol’ Monster. That hook is extremely easy to set, even with a long cast using 0.012 inch diameter nylon mono. Maybe a bit big and maybe I lose a bite or two because it’s kinda big, but anything that inhales that worm gets stuck and stays stuck. The wire really isn’t overly heavy, either, at least not on the 7/0. It’s well matched to the St. Croix PC56MF, Shimano Curado K 201, and the 10lb Sufix Elite. A 1/16oz tungsten worm sinker pegged in front, and that Ol’ Monster falls nice and slowly.
From my experience, it's possible to over power your hooks with drag as well. I found that I lost or almost lost a few fish using the heavy wire hooks with too tight of drag. I would end up tearing a bigger hole in the fishes mouth for that hook to pop out. Keep that in mind as well.
Great tip. I’d love to see the tip on rigging the beaver bait when you get the chance. I’d love to see a video of you explaining your approach to shallow cover when you’re flipping. Boat position, trolling motor speed, what you look for when flipping etc.
Great lesson. I need basic details. Now I need some of those straight shank hooks. Q: Was the Trick worm rigged flat-side-up deliberately? Q: Does obtrusiveness matter in dirtier water, nighttime? (I've a lot of EWGs .... paid for.)
Gamakatsu G-Finesse heavy cover worm hook is my absolute favorite hook of all time. 1/0-2/0 for floating worms on fluoro and 3/0-5/0 on 30-50 lb braid for Texas rigs never bent one out and don’t need to set the hook as hard as you would on normal flipping hooks. Man was a genius, R.I.P Aaron Martens.
Curious Randy, recently i ordered 2 packs light wire worm hooks 2/0 at TWs (among other components like O-rings and Crankbaits). Definitely going to use this tip about side rigging the worm. Keep on uploading your videos 😎👍
Thank you for the tips. Question... at 8:15- is there a specific reason why you bring the hook through what I have always thought (assumed) is the top of the worm (the rounded or "ridged" side), versus the flat or "bottom" (at least to me) side of the worm?
Genius worm hooking technique would love to see how you rig some more plastics. I typically used the exact opposite approach for hook choice but I’ll definitely be switching it up!
Like the 4/0 Owner Beast & the Green pumpkin Z Craw a Orange Bead & a 1/16 tungsten flipping weight. The 3/0 Berkeley fusion flipping hook +Bold Bluegill Roboworm 6 inch fat body +1/16 tungsten flipping weight.
Dude I missed a giant fish on an EWG hook I hate them , I just saw a video on hook set with EWG I always swing upwards with my hook sets don’t do that with EWG go with a sidearm hook set I will be finding out tomorrow wish me luck I hate fishing Texas rigs tis the season and I will be mastering this hook set before sitting it down
It did. Somebody called my phone while I was filming the video and some how it stopped the whole thing and I didn’t realize it until I posted it. Sorry about that guys

Never thought of skin hooking the side of the bait. My pile of straight shanks have new life. Thank you!!

Yep, the tips are a great help. it's amazing how many questions there are on just hooks, the shank, bend, gap, same with weights and leaders.
I love your tip, that skin hooks the worm on the side...the seems like solid advice, I appreciate it
Really cool tip about the worm hook side set, I’m excited to try that. Thanks!

Great info! Love the way you talk about deterrents /negatives on baits

Will do Mark!
Thanks Randy. You really make it real
Youre a boss the way you keep the content coming oit so frequently. Favorite videos i look forward to
Thx man!

Love your videos, man! The tips are great and there are no shameless brand/product plugs. Keep em coming!

I was wondering the same thing
I think it improves the hook up ratio a bit

For a straight shank what are your thoughts on a round bend vs O’Shaughnessy bend?
Great tips. Definitely makes sense.
Not sure this would make a full video, but still a question for you. Where do you discard/recycle old hooks (bent, broken, etc.)?
gonna need a part two on this one
Thought it was just me. Video cut off in the middle of his sentence
@@KaydensDaddy2010 He mentioned it happening earlier in the video lol

Randy you are the man
Very sound advice
Randy how about the round bend J style hook, you never mention them? I am talking about hooks like the Gamakatsu 3/0 54413
Very interesting analysis, most are die-hard one way or another.
I, too, consider profile when choosing a hook. I think some hooks add too much to a bait's profile.
Dang just when good part was coming lol great tip
Awesome info bud!

Great video. Subscribed!
Love your videos
I was wondering do you peg a weight or not?
Good info but it ended before you were finished
Yep didn’t see that til it posted
Video seems to stop short?
That skin hooking the side of the 🪱🤯
Go off king
Just when it was getting good too...
Just uploaded a follow up video and finished it up. Sorry about all that!
You rig your worm upside down?
Please finish the video it was getting good
Just posted part two and finished up!
Good info, i think you lost some of your video?
Yeah it got cut off because somebody called my phone and I didn’t realize until I’d already posted the video
This video is accidentally cut short.
This video cuts off before you end your commentary.
Hey Randy, the video quit too soon.
