Thanks Solomon. Kotov variation looks great fun to play, and I'll be using it in some of my games. Great video

    Hey Solomon, how ya doing? New suggestion for ya: can you cover also 1. d4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. e4 d6 4. Nc3 c5
    with the intentions of 5. d5 Bxc3+! 6. bxc3 e5!?
Magnus Carlsen and a lot of people played this at the GM level and it there's lines where Black wins 86 percent of the time! (Like Benjamin Haldorsen's lines)
    cheers!

Good video Solomon. I’ve been dappling with either the neo-Modern vs the “Averback” set up (d4,c4,Nc6,e4) or the Kotov (Nc6) Modern you cover here so well or sometimes c5 first aiming to mess up White’s queenside pawn structure with Bg7xNc6. Of these three choices the 365chess database claims the last (ie, c5 with Bg7xNc3) performs best but the Lichess database says the Kotov (Nc6) performs best. Personally, I find the Kotov easy to play as the N wedged into d4 is just great. I’ve been dappling also with the HyperAccelerated Dragon (the HAD) vs e4 and oddly enough sometimes the positions transpose into the Kotov Modern(!) especially when White goes for a Maroczy Bind against the HAD. With the HAD there are ways to avoid the Maroczy Bind but it requires Black to forfeit castling right with an early Queen trade & not the attacking game most players enjoy, so I prefer to play against the Maroczy Bind as these games typically feature slashing tactics & when Black does break up one of the pawn pinchers on e4 or more typically c4, players of the White pieces often lose heart & resign or collapse rather quickly. Sometimes white avoids the Kotov Modern with e3 instead of e4 & I’m not sure what to do then. Any ideas? Cheers!

Appreciate the content! If you have an affiliate link you can plug some hypermodern related books too I would think 👍 or not, maybe that’s gross these days 🤷‍♂️

Robert Ramirez has a course called counter blow on Chessable that is extremely good and teaches you key hypermodern ideas in an easy to digest package
