I came over from Tom Burleigh's channel and I am glad I did. I love seeing that you are making tiles from the porcelain that you picked up. Incredibly neat idea! Your tile turned out lovely. Will be watching to see what other tiles you make.
That's a loveley comment Flo, thanks a lot. I've made a lot of tiles already and am starting the floor with them now. Next video soon... as soon as i can anyway.
Lovely first video James, I hope you and Linda are doing OK and that you have enough blue and white to finish the project during this lock-down. Are the tiles we found the right size to use as they are?
Thanks Tom, really appreciate your comment. We are doing fine, we don't have the same level of lock down here in holland so can still go exploring but observing the social distancing rules. No I don't have enough pieces, so still collecting! The larger tiles we found are are impregnated with rust stains sadly, which I need to find a solution to, they may have to be used in pieces... we'll see.
@@findcreate6174 Have you tried muriatic acid for the rust stains? It is sold as pool acid and it is also found in calcium, lime, rust removers, albeit at lower concentrations. Of course, be careful as it is very corrosive. For those with University chemistry, muriatic acid is about 1M HCl. I think it may also be sold as Baker's Fluid. My Dad used to use it on metal before soldering.
@@fernbrisot325 Hi Fern, No i've not heard of it before although I have used rust removers on metal before. Rust removers for metal are probably different as they convert the orange to black/purple which is no good on tiles. Really appreciate your advice and I will look for some and when I try it with success I will update you and put it on a future video.
First off, welcome to TH-cam. What a great tutorial on how to make the tiles. The one you made in this video was so stunning. Well done. Thanks to Tom Burleigh for linking your channel. I am a new subscriber from Canada and am a metal detectorist and avid searcher of neat things. I have been saving all my pottery shards that I find and now I know what to do with them. Off to watch the second part now. :)
Hi Beppe, thank you so much for your loveley comment. greetings to you in Canada from me in Holland. I'm happy that maybe you might use your shards this way. Part 2 is me using all the tiles I made for the floor but I'm back at work now so progress is a little slower than hoped. I will try and get it done this week!! "Happy June". kind regards - James
@@findcreate6174 What part of Holland are you? As you can tell from the Beppe in my name, that I am of Frisian descent. My parents both came from Friesland.
Just a tip for you: Contact paper is fairly inexpensive and much easier to use than strips of tape. They make clear and patterned. Using a brush instead of a putty knife works much better too. I wouldn't be sharing tips if I hadn't done this many, many times before myself. I'm just trying to save you time.
Fantastic, thanks very much for the tip! I've got some much wider tape of recent, so it only takes two strips, but I didn't know about contact paper, I'll get some. @@findcreate6174 Another thing you could do is cover the individual sides of your mold and the bottom with either your tape or the contac paper before assembly. The grout won't stick to it and you wouldn't have to use the vaseline.
@@findcreate6174 Cooking spray is what we always used as release when we made latex molds (before silicone came along) for casting for sculptures. Silicone is amazing! Great for casting resin.. And contact paper comes with the peel-off paper gridded. Makes cutting easier.
Tom Burleigh's video brought me here and I am super excited to see how your channel goes. I love the idea of using found bits and bobs in art or craft projects. I have a small collection of sea glass, collected when visiting relatives that live near the coast. However, also I found 2 tiny pieces of pottery (over 2 visits mind you) and I started watching mudlarking videos as a way to scratch that pottery itch. I dabble in mosaics and I love the tiles you are making. I also love that each tile is a work of art in its own right, and then becomes transformative as a floor in your home. Make sure you put your favorite piece about 12 inches in front of the toilet, for maximum contemplative pleasure! Thank you so much for sharing.

Thanks again Hanneke, I wanted to do something I hadn't seen before and use the pieces in a good way to display them nicely. They are basically the same as normal porcelain tiles so they are durable and hygienic.
Fantastic end result. Just a couple of observations; firstly not using safety gloves when you know you should is absolutely fine until you lose the end of a finger, better safe than sorry. Secondly if during the laying out process of the individual component pieces you decided which edge was the top of the slide you could orientate fragments with people/animals/buildings/flora accordingly. You will only notice this orientation when you are sat on the throne but just think of the pleasure it will give you at such times. I start as I began, fantastic end result and I take my hat off to you sir.
Thanks again David. Yes I should know better concerning safety, particularly as I am a golf professional so I need all my fingers. Once again thank you sincerely for your kind words and advice.
Thanks so much Amanda, really nice to read your comment and that you have subscribed. Part 2 will be a little while as the tiles are part of a bigger project.
fantastic idea , used to collect old pottery shards , and dish shards , we played a game called wallies , with them , a bit like pick up sticks , but bouncing a ball and grab as many pieces you can , before the ball hits the floor again , but if you can grab a lot of pieces , put them between your knees and catch the ball , before it hits the ground , doubles your points , lol game is played while you are kneeling down

@@findcreate6174 You're welcome! Overall, I think most British accents are well liked by Americans, which is where I'm from. I'm personally impressed by the variety of accents there are throughout Britain. Anyway, I'm looking forward to part 2 of the tiles and will happily watch your future videos!
@@theresac.3216 Thanks again Theresa, There are certainly a lot of accents in the UK, some are so subtle that you only realise when you have spent time living in the area. I lived for many years in a town called Burnley in Lancashire, There is a strong accent there but in the town next door called Accrington (literally, next door) they have another slightly different accent, noticeable mainly in words like "No". In Accrington they hang onto the O with a tone change that sounds like "neo". Anyway, have a good week and i hope to post again soon..ish. Regards James
Very pretty! I am not a fan of the usual mosaic designs, too random with too much grout. Yours , though, appeal because of their regimented rows and square corners. To me, that successfully unites all the discrete shades of blue and the various motifs! Well done! Greetings from Florida!
Thanks sooo much for the kind comment and feedback. I didn't want too much of a random jumble of lines everywhere either, I've seen them before and it doesn't do it for me. However, there were a few pieces that I din't want to cut square for various reasons such as their genuine age or the writing on them or the fact that I get a lot of wastage making squares, so some tiles have regularities. Mostly they are grids as you will see in part 2 soon. Thanks again and great to comments from all over the world!! Take care

Beautiful. We don’t have these tiles readily available in the states to find but I’ve thought about doing this with my moms coffee cups. She’s passed away and she had collected coffee cups from all over the states. I just haven’t figured out how to do this with curved pieces......
Hi Misty, thanks for the comment. Curved pieces aren't good for what I've been doing. Maybe if the pieces are very small or you are using them to stick on something not flat like a large garden plant pot? Good luck if you go for it.
What a interesting and attractive tile. You have a lot of patience and detail. How many of these tiles do you have to have in all? The lovely bright pieces of pottery have so much detail on them. Maybe as you finish each one you could hold each one close to the lens to see It's detail in each piece more propery. So glad Tom sent me over. I'm sure [ will enjoy all of your information. Best Wishes
Hi Brenda, what a lovely comment, thanks so much. I have made about... I'm not sure without going and counting them...I think 14, and they are all different and beautiful but I've run out of shards. I am tiling the floor with them now and filming Part 2, I hope I have enough. I will take your advice and film or pass slowly over each one to show the details on the next video. Thank you again! kind regards - James.
Thanks for the comment Brian and Tami and your good wishes. Mainly when I am making the tiles it comes down to how they fit without too big a gap or touching others. And they go face down on the tape so again I go for the fit. There isn't a real top or bottom and when I am using them it won't matter on the floor they are fitted because it's a riot of variation anyway. But thanks again for the feedback. It looks like a patch worked quilt . I love it! Your floor is going to be a one of a kind and absolutely gorgeous! And I thought bathroom floors tiles in old copper pennies was beautiful but your tiles got em beat.
You are very kind Patricia thank you. I can imagine the pennies floor would look amazing too.
I'm doing the final tiles for the floor now and hope to have that video out soon.
Lovely project with your tile finds larking in the mud. I came over from Tom Burleigh's channel, as you were on a mudlark with him a bit ago before the lock-down. Stay safe and keep cutting and grouting that white and blue tile collection. God bless!

Tom sent me too! This project means that you can nver move house! I love it and have watched part two and think the end result looks amazing.
Thanks again Jan. I wouldn't mind leaving it for someone else to love and doing it all again, but I'd hate to leave it and find out it was removed and thrown away. Thanks for coming over from Toms channel.
Tom sent me, too. I love the tiles! It will make a beautiful flooring! Great job on the video, too. Not bad for a first time.
Hi Barbara, Thanks for coming over from Tom's channel and leaving such a kind comment. I've made lots of tiles now and will show them in my next video. Is your surname Dutch? I live in Holland and my partner thinks it might be. Kind regards James
@@findcreate6174 It is Dutch! My husband's family came to the USA when his father was 5 years old. He has since passed but forgot his native tongue, so my husband only knows English. The last name means thorny shrub, we were told.
So looking forward to more videos!
@@barbaraverdoorn9076 Excellent! and we live near Apeldoorn in holland and my partner says indeed that doorn means thorn.
@@findcreate6174 Very cool! I think there are less than 400 people in America with the surname Verdoorn! It is cool to have it's meaning confirmed. Thank you!
I am friends (on line) with a young kid (24 - a kid to this old lady🤣😂), who lives in Das Hague. He actually introduced himself to me because of my last name. He still lives in his parents home but he says it is so beautiful there. Maybe someday we will take a trip & visit there, so when you become a major TH-cam star, don't forget us little guys. 😊❤️
Very well done. You video and workmanship are excellent 👍🇨🇦
Thanks a million Carol I really appreciate that
Glad to be here, at the start of your new channel, and have subscribed to it. I just came across it, from Tom Burleigh's channel. The tile is beautiful.
Hi Lisa, Tom's kind shout out has certainly boosted my views and comments. Glad you found me and thank you for your kind comment and for subscribing. Part 2 is coming soon but it takes ages to make enough tiles!!
@@findcreate6174 I'm looking forward to seeing when you have it all finished.
Great idea! Enjoyed your video.💕
Hi Elizabeth, Really big thank you and also an apology, I have been through my unanswered messages 3 times recently and now TH-cam has just said "you have one message you haven't responded to" Your message! and from 3 weeks ago!!

Much appreciated Kathi, It wont be too long hopefully. I'm back at work so don't have as much spare time but maybe I can get done this week.
Sent by Tom. Have subscribed as can’t wait to see your future projects.
Hi Sam, cheers for coming over and sorry for my late reply. Really appreciate the comment and part 2 is uploading now
I just love the idea of tile making. That's really bringing something to life, something that's purposeful :)
Thanks again Hanneke, I wanted to do something I hadn't seen before and use the pieces in a good way to display them nicely. They are basically the same as normal porcelain tiles so they are durable and hygienic.
What a great idea, thanks for sharing 🦘
Thanks for the kind comment, really appreciate it.
Tom sent me over
Hi Julie, thanks for hopping over, much appreciated and Tom did me a big favour!
That tile looks fantastic 😀
Hi Lesley. Thank you very very much. I'm glad you and everyone it seems, like it!!
I don't have any of the tools you used but found this video very enjoyable and inspiring! The tile is beautiful! I have liked and subbed x
Thanks so much Amanda, really nice to read your comment and that you have subscribed. Part 2 will be a little while as the tiles are part of a bigger project.
fantastic idea , used to collect old pottery shards , and dish shards , we played a game called wallies , with them , a bit like pick up sticks , but bouncing a ball and grab as many pieces you can , before the ball hits the floor again , but if you can grab a lot of pieces , put them between your knees and catch the ball , before it hits the ground , doubles your points , lol
game is played while you are kneeling down
Tom burleigh sent me to your page , great stuff
Hi John. Sounds a fun game and one I've never heard of! Coming from the North of England we used play some random games as kids. It does sound like it would be fun for the kids. Thanks for coming over from Tom's channel too
Tom Burleigh has mention about your project and I just love this video awesome❤️🇨🇦
Thanks very much Catherine, Tom really helped my channel with his kind mentions. Glad you liked it
Great video and beautiful tiles too! You have a great voice, lovely accent and warm personality! Your instructions are clear and easy to follow so, I'm sure your channel will do well!
Hi Theresa. Thank you for your kind words, never heard anyone say they like my Huddersfield accent before!! I'm so pleased you liked the video. Part 2 is coming but i'm back at work now so creative time is limited.
The tiles are awesome 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you so much!! Glad you like them
Great idea! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much I really appreciate the positive feedback
Always wanted to see the process, thank you. :)
Hi Kathleen, Thank you, I'm glad I have enlightened you! Kind regards - James
So happy to have found your channel. What a fabulous way to create your own tiles. Going to watch some of your other videos now :)
Hi Viv and thank you so much for the positive comment and apologies for my late reply.
Take care
Your tiles are beautiful. What a marvelous idea. Looking forward to watching your channel grow. I came from Tom’s channel as well. Best of luck with your new venture.
Hi Louetta. I'm really overwhelmed by the help of Tom's recommendation. Thank you very much for the lovely comment and I hope I can keep you entertained with upcoming videos. Kind regards - James
Great video
Great job. Looks like a fun project.
Many thanks, it was a fun project but lots of work
Just so lovely that you can use all all those pieces you have collected....to think that each piece in that tile has a story!....greetings from Fiji.
Hi Weni, thank you for your lovely comment. Absolutely, every piece has a story we will never know and can only imagine
I love the idea, great project! I can‘t wait to see the end result :-)
Thank you very much for your comment and so sorry my reply has been so slow. My work has taken over my life and I neglected my TH-cam duties,. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Kind regards - James
Thank you, no worries!
Turned out great, as expected. On to your new video :-)
Amazing, you are very talented.☮️🇨🇦
You are very kind 😊😊

Thanks Carol, I'm so happy Tom gave me the shout out, it's boosted my channel immensely. I appreciate your kind feedback too!!!
Lovely tile. I'm going to try this 👍🏻
Thanks and glad it inspired you. Linda says she’s not selling the house ever! Haha
You may enjoy more control with a grout file tool. That being said your creations are very cool.
I appreciate the advice Ray, I'll see if I can get one. Thanks very much
love the tile very nice ,came over from toms channel
I really appreciate you coming over and leaving your lovely comment. Big thanks
Your title is absolutely gorgeous 🙀🦋
I'm really happy you like it and really happy to get your kind comment!
Great job.
Thank you Debbra for the kind feedback
Great to see something practical being made from basically rubbish.
Thanks for the lovely comment Georgia. Happy New Year to you 👋🏻👋🏻
That’s really cool. Keep up the good work
Cheers Adam. Sorry my reply was so late, really appreciate your kind comment. All the best - James
Love it!
Many thanks for your comment Betty 😀😀
Beautiful! :)
Thanks Christine, glad you like it
Beautiful
Hi Sara. Thanks very much, my apologies for the late reply, but a sincere thank you it is!!
Very cool!
Thank you Jessica, I'm happy you liked it. I am working on part 2 now
Why are some tiles upside down? I will enjoy your find and create videos. Good luck👍🏼
Kind regards to you both - James
