CDL Basic Backing Skills; Alley Dock, Offset, Straight Line Backing

- After completing the CDL Pre-Trip Inspection, the next portion of the Skills Test will be Basic Control. The Basic Control Skills Test includes 100ft Straight Line Backing, Offset Backing (Right or Left), and Alley Dock.
The video demonstrates successful completion of all three maneuvers along with the proper way of exiting your vehicle for Outside Vehicle Observations (Looks). It also demonstrates common errors and how to recover from them.
The video is an excellent tool for preparing for many of the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Behind-the-Wheel Range exercises.

Thank you for this video. I'm training somebody to get their CDL so we can team drive and this helps me explain the process and how the test will go. I've been doing this for a while and am a little far removed from when I took my skills test.
Need more step by step instructions like what to look for in each mirror which mirror to focus on...how that trailer reacts turn left to swing it right

Wow ,,this is so much harder since I took my test ! All I had to do was an off-set from the drivers side and stay 3 ft from 3 cones with truck and trailer !

I can back any of my trailers amd put them anywhere. However In a semi it is way different. It takes practice. I am taking my test Thursday

Yes, we will be offering the Entry Level Driver Training requirements so that CDL applicants can take the Skills Test when it is mandated by FLHSMV.

When I was a kid my dad would pull into the lot , get out , go inside and start making a pot of coffee. It was up to me to get it in the dock, no help or direction. How I learned

Great video but please, use your four way flashers while backing the commercial motor vehicle. In many jurisdictions not using flashers while backing is an automatic failure on the CDL test.

You will not use a trailer for the Class B test.

I, OWN A 1973, FORD F-700 DUMP TRK. WITH AIR BRAKES. DMV. TOLD ME THAT I DONT NEED A CDL. AS LONG AS I KEEP MY HAULING WEIGHT UNDER [26.01] 🙏
It isn't about how much weight you haul, it is whether or not the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle is 26,001 pounds or more. If the dump truck is rated at 26,001 or more, minimally, you would need a Class B CDL. If the GVWR is 26,000 pounds or less, then you do not.

Wow they are a lot more lenient than they use to be. I passed my CDL in 1995 and had to do it again to become a state certified instructor in 2001. Use to be a point every pull up and you could only encroach one time, second you failed. Hit the back cone on the 45 degree alley dock you failed. No free pull ups and you were not allowed to exit the vehicle. You were allowed 6 point, 7th was failed.

Yes, the skills test, and the follow-on driving test, is required for Class A, B, and C CDLs.

At the time the video was produced, parallel parking was not a requirement in Florida. With ELDT, it is now required, but it is expected the entire maneuver process will be changing this upcoming summer -- when we have the approved specifics, we plan to make an updated video..
When getting put to look je didmt close his door . its an automatic fail.
10:45 was not 3-points of contact. Fail.
100% true unfortunately. Since 2018 states including indiana you can fail the test by not using 3 points of contact to get in and out.

Is the Alley Dock a 90 degree or 45?
The rig would start its backing toward the dock from a 90 degree angle.

So I failed because I put the truck in neutral,I was told by the trooper to leave it in first gear. I guess it varies by state.

Just be aware that in the real world you will never have that much space to do any of these maneuvers.

There's no parrelell parking
Parallel parking is required for ELDT (which we do train to in our ELDT course), but it is not required for the CDL skills test in Florida. This video was made before ELDT went live.
Nationwide in the near future, the backing requirements will be changing, and when that becomes official, we expect to make a new video to demonstrate them.
Don’t follow this in New York. You can only get out during parallel parking. Straight back and alley dock you have to stay inside

I did not hear him pull the parking brake before he blew the horn at the end of the straight line lol. Currently getting ready for week 4 of CDL school and I am on here desperately seeking any and all knowledge on my alley docking as the instructor they have put me with for this is complete garbage and does not even know how to set you up to begin the move, does not engage me to correct what is wrong but rather just guides you into the box with enough points to damn near fail out of that portion of the test.
Hopefully, this video fills in the areas your instructor isn't covering with much clarity. :)

This test is total BS however, I've seen so many drivers pull and correct themselves like 15 times out in the real world
What's your point? Just because people cut me off in traffic all the time doesn't mean I should go DO that on my test.

And in the real world, you should get out as many times as you need so you don't hit or run over something.
it's hard enough to maintain straight line, this video doesn't teach you that, it only demonstrates the results.
Learning how to make adjustments during any backing maneuver can only come from real world practice. Each vehicle combination can be unique in the way it responds.

There are plenty of semi videos out there. I am driving a straight truck and this is nice general knowledge of how the testing goes. How obnoxious
