  • As highlighted in a previous update I wanted to add a ghost sign to the side of the Victorian houses kit. In this video I show you how I’ve gone about it with a little help from a neat stencil provided by Scale Model Scenery. I hope you enjoy it.

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, it could certainly be done prior to building in order to work on a flat surface however it would also mean having to paint the brick, something I wouldn’t normally do until after to allow join lines to be filled, etc. Paul

  • @lasermodeler
    @lasermodeler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wonder why you did things in reverse? Most of the ghost signs I've seen pretty much reveal how the signwriter painted them. In this instance, the signwriter would have painted a Cobolt Blue square background to cover the bricks. The next stage would have been a white border. He would have then painted the white letters over the blue, first using an anti-bleed undercoat. As the sign faded, the white lettering would begin to expose the blue background. As that broke down, the bricks would begin to appear. I think the blue background could have been laid down first with the white lettering placed on top. The process is fine, but you'd eliminate the need to mask the lettering. One comment about the stencil: The two words seem to be way to far apart: www.picuki.com/media/2395061652016812760

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback John. Not being a sign writer I guess is my answer for doing it the way I did. The process still works and gives the effect I was after. Paul

  • @railwayjim6154
    @railwayjim6154 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks very realistic Paul, you've done an excellent job, love it. Just wondered if before removing the letters mask, could you maskol whilst it's still in place, to save doing it freehand and then remove it for the background work?

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jim, thank you. I did try that method first on a test piece but found the maskol occasionally leached under the template. Rather than an untidy mess I felt it better and easier to just paint it on free hand. Paul

  • @TheSwitchList
    @TheSwitchList 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video Paul - but I have one question, why were the letters put on first instead of doing the blue background first? Seems like doing the background first would eliminate the need to use the maskol over the letters. Maybe you addressed this in the video and I missed it?
    - Rick

    • @TheSwitchList
      @TheSwitchList 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh, I think I just answered my own question - you want the brick color coming through the letters, not the blue color.... :)

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rick, no I didn’t address it directly and should have. The prototypes from photographic evidence appear to show that lettering was painted directly on to the brick and the blue painted round this. Worn lettering work shoes plain brick behind and not the blue hence this approach. Hope that helps and thank you for the comments. Paul

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, that’s it exactly. The reference in the video on the gaps in the lettering was for additional white to be added if necessary where the little stories held the centre pieces of the highlighted letters. Paul

    Really nice but wouldn't it be easier to paint the background colour first then the lettering on top, then you get the background colour in the gaps in the letters, such as the O. Wouldn't need the masking fluid then. All the best Anthony.

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anthony, thank you for the feedback. The reason I took this approach is twofold, the first I was concerned a solid blue background would have shown through to some degree with the white applied on top being such a bold colour. Secondly and more importantly, the prototypes show no evidence that they were painted with a blue background first. The worn white lettering reveals brick colours behind and not the blue of the border. Paul
