    Off subject a bit: just curious, what about asparagus? I love them, are they worth trying? Heard they are perennial, like artichokes

      Hi, Eleanor. Yes, asparagus is a perennial crop so you need to dedicate an area for them. We have grown it for years, with mixed success but that's primarily due to problems with gophers and cutworms. But you just can't beat sweet and tender springtime asparagus!

    I am excited for this video because I have been 'chitting' my seed potatoes for a while now and was wondering about the next step. I appreciate that you will give updates so we can see the whole process. Thank you.

    Susan help please!
    Big fan, your bug book ,your channel, everything. Planted taters (Adirondack red zone 6) in a bag for the first time..doing great however some are already as tall as the bag top..how do I keep mounding up to their necks if the grow higher then my 21" bag?? Yipes

      Hi, Justine. No worries! Just keep filling until they get to the top. They're just reaching for the sun. They'll probably grow a foot or so above the top edge of the bag and that's perfectly OK!

    Would love to see how the drip is set up to the bags. During hot spells how long would you run the drip for in fabric grow bags. These bags are new to me this year. I plan to grow melons, cucumber, zucchini in them.

      Each bag will have a loop of the drip tubing. I didn't put it in the bag yet because I knew it was going to rain so I wasn't in a hurry! Sorry.

      @@SusansInTheGarden Oh no need to be sorry and I meant how does it get to the bag, what size hose, how long to run etc. Hey maybe a good idea for a separate video 😉☺️

      @@emptynestgardens9057 Bill set up a single line of drip tubing that has shorter lines connected into it. Each one is about 3' long and we coil each one inside a grow bag, with the line resting on the soil surface. I'll try to remember to show that in a future video.

    Can you use potato that are wrinkled with chits or do the potatoes still need to be firm?

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firm seed potatoes are ideal but I've planted some that are a bit wrinkled and they still did OK.

    Well I need to try this system in Texas. More control and ease in harvesting. Win win. Thanks again Susan. Another great tip.

    Do you always wait till the Fall to harvest? I thought most potatoes are mature approx 100 days and are dug up when the green stems start to die off. Can you leave them in the soil longer? I try to stagger plantings a little bit so I can enjoy eating them asap and do not have to store them over winter, for just one person.

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Marilyn. Yes, that is our routine. The potatoes will be a nice size by then, although we do sneak a few "new" potatoes during the summer. If you leave the potatoes in the ground for about 2 weeks after they are frosted, their skins will harden a bit which means they'll keep longer in store. There's nothing wrong with harvesting potatoes earlier, they'll just be a bit smaller.

    Is it ok if my potatoes “chittings” are really tall before planting? If they are too tall can I clip them short before planting?

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the chitting process, you're exposing the seedlings to light, either in a bright room (which is what we do) or even under a grow light. And I always have short-ish sprouts using this technique. Are your sprouts really long and white because they did that where you were storing them? I haven't tried trimming long sprouts because I would worry about the risk of rot developing but if yours are really long, you could give that a try. I would plant them ASAP.

      @@SusansInTheGarden they are really long-yes we’re exposed to light for probably too long. Not sure what to do but they are green not white!

      That is Wily Coyote, our coyote decoy, which we originally bought to keep the quail out of our garden. That didn't work but I did write a funny garden column about him that you might enjoy: www.susansinthegarden.com/2021/07/july-18-column-coyote-decoy/. I'm glad you liked the video!
