Agree that's exactly what it sounds like, although it may just be that Southgate was told by England Management to be very careful about what he said so he ended up waffling a bit. Found it interesting that he also specifically mentioned Steve Holland - possibly a sign that he is also under orders to protect Steve Holland's position possibly in case FIFA ask for an explanation. Also interesting that Southgate got the news from Edu - again probably Arsenal protecting their own position by making it 100% clear that the club was not preventing BW from being available (which I think would make them liable for action by England / FIFA).

Ben White isn't a soft player like there trying to describe. Every teammate at Arsenal raves about Ben White toughness & mentality. Every Arsenal players first words about him is he's a warrior, Arteta described him as that as well. These aren't just his mates who knew him growing up or his background but players from many different countries & top class players who all identified that quality about him. White debut season for Arsenal when Arsenal were fighting for top 4 back end of the season was playing through a grade 2 hamstring. Always made himself available. This season he's played through knee injuries. Ben White is someone who most of his early childhood was in & out of hospitals, he suffered from an extremely weak immune system, he was always ill, allergic to many things and possibility of having a quality life was slim let alone playing football. He then overcame that, signed by Southampton at age 10, worked his way up before eventually being released at 16. He's very resilient character, who loved playing football. He was then picked up by Brighton, had to work himself up playing league 2, League 1 and Championship. He never got anything easy, never heralded as great talent. He was never picked by England at any of the youth levels. During his loan to Leeds he helped them get promoted to the PL for the first time in 16 years, White played every second of that season. Even then he saw teammate Kalvin Philips get picked while in the championship for England while he didn't get a look in. He then played 1 excellent season in the PL at Brighton when he finally got called up. He only played for Brighton the season before he signed for Arsenal, was always out on loan before then to many clubs. The idea that he didn't want to sit on a bench during a world cup is just flat out not true. No club had issues with Ben White from League 1 loans to championship, to playing in PL and now at Arsenal. League 2 or league 1 clubs are less excepting of a teenager from PL club coming into there changing room with any arrogance or entitlements. England camp is extremely welcoming environment. Ben issue was with specifically with Steve Holland who disrespected him & tried to shame him in front of the group. I think him pretending like nothing happened & just coming back is a sign of weakness, instead he's backing himself even at the expense of media backlash. When Southgate spoke with White post world cup, him saying there was clearly still hard feeling about the issue should tell people it's not about minutes or sitting on a bench. Always Southgate backing his mate Steve Holland by gaslighting the media by saying there's no issue between White and Steve Holland and it's just White is why he doesn't want to play for England.
Seems very logical to me. White is tougher than most people think. He even know knows already that he will get abused in the league but is determined to take it.
representing your country isn't necessarily the most important thing for many footballers, people need to get over it. Club football has taken away from the allure of the international game. It doesn't make Ben White a criminal. It's better that he is clear that he doesn't want to play, that way no-one's time gets wasted. I seem to recall Ferguson and Effenberg declining to play for their countries after initially doing so, hardly a new development.
The absolute lack of even a thought of responsibility and blame on Southgate and his lackies is mind-boggling. England has never won a WC in his lifetime let alone his tenure. Some of the best talent in the world the last 30 years and nothing to show for it. Stop pretending England gaffers, recently Southgate, walk on water and can’t be criticized. They have failed miserably with the talent they have had. Why should Ben White feel honored to do anything that man tells him to do? These pundits are delusional if they think embarrassing themselves in international competitions should be an honor for these players and there are no excuses to the contrary. Absolute rubbish.
Some of the best talent in the world the last 30 years and nothing to show for it because unsurprisingly Bottle it Like Bukayo bottled it from 12 yards Oh how we laughed!
The fact Tamori didn't even get a look while Braithwaite got a call up tells you Southgate has an issue at cb. At cb he values loyalty over performance, Southgate out.
Southgate is an absolute disgrace for throwing Ben white to the wolves of the public, media and online scrutiny. Nobody owes their country anything whether that is in terms of fighting for your country or playing a simple game of football.
International football isn’t the pinnacle people say it is. Friendlies and qualification is boring football to watch. On top of that throw in Southgate’s style of football. Snooze fest
These people have an awful lot to say about the situation, considering none of them has a clue as to what the real reason behind Ben White’s decision is.
A few days ago it was "we don't know the full story so we can't elaborate on it" but all they've done is elaborate on things they don't know. He doesn't want to play for southgate, that's HIS CHOICE. The media hate the fact that he doesn't give them what they want, more power to him.
If more players felt the same way as White does, Southgate wouldn't have favourites and would play players on form. Constantly picking Maguire, Henderson, Sterling and Phillips is pathetic.
One day the truth will come out, and my assumption is Ben White will be owed an apology from many people. Southgate handling of this situation and being a media puppet is exactly why he will never be a top manager. Top managers protect players. They don't chuck them under a bus. Southgate knows first-hand what it's like to have a country talk about you, and he's put Ben White in exactly the same position. The sooner Southgate is gone, the sooner England can win something
No one is considering hes playing with a knee injury at the minute. He knows he wont play for England even if hes in the squad and so hes focusing thia week into rehab to prepare him for the last 2 months of the season
Don't people get it? He has fallen out with the England staff, staff accused him not integrating into the squad. Then they were digging him out with notes, he and Steve Holland fell out and everyone decided it's best for Ben to leave the squad. Gareth is a LIAR to say there is no problems. The kid wants to play for England but not under this set up. If everyone felt he had to leave the squad then why all of a sudden would he want to play for this manager again and come sit on the bench for a manager and coaching stuff he does not get on with.
Considering no one knows all the facts about this situation it amazes me that everyone has an opinion and want to judge his character. Lots of other players have done similar things and no one bats an eyelid
But what does playing for your country mean these days? Going to play for England and never being being picked can be draining on someone's mental health, the manager said he would pick players on form but doesn't pick players on form so why would you keep going

The only entitlement here is contained in the panel. Its his life. He can do whatever he likes and you have no right to know about his personal circumstances
Ben White is a tremendous player for his club. Arsenal have been competing for 2 seasons now. He is only being asked to go along with the squad. He won’t start any games even if he went. So what is wrong with saying no when you won’t start games. Walker. Trippier. James, Arnold will start before him. Southgate won’t start him as a CB because McGuire is his go to. Ben is simply saying stop wasting my time. I am not coming to sit the bench!
Exactly. Why would you want to be dragged off for a week in Kraplakistan knowing in advance you won't even get one minute because Southgate never drops his favourites, even if they're not playing for their club. Who wants to spend a week away from home with people you don't necessarily like, only to never have your commitment rewarded? Sack that. Be at home with your family, training with your club, sleeping in your own bed and not having to share a hotel room with Jack Grealish or Harry Maguire.
It’s funny how many of these same pundits and fans criticising White will also moan when players from other countries go play internationals when it might impact their clubs.
Southgate picks Maguire regardless. James, Tripper, Arnold, Walker, even Shaw at right back would be played ahead of White despite White being on the best form and having a partnership with Saka for his club
Yeah, Danny Murphy almost hits the nail on the head but - he knew the other players in his position were better than him! - White is not in the same position. BW is better than 90% of the England backline and still will not play!
Fuck..o Simon, why does he have to play for his country? That's his choice not to play. Why are people slaughtering him? It could be a number of reasons why he's not decided to play for Southgate"s squad.
I didnt realise it is an honour to sit on the bench in a pointless international knowing you dont have a chance of playing because you are not one of Southgate's favourites.
My respect for Southgate unfortunately has gone down. He must have known how the crowd will react. As for Simon pontificating about everything on earth, should give it a rest. White should be given the freedom of his own decision.

But there's this great sadness in the pit of my stomach that if he were a black Englishman with his skillset and calibre, his "Englishness" would be questioned; his loyalty to his country would be judged; how disrespectful it is to the King and to country etc. The usual nationalism parroting. Credit to Ben White for standing on what he believes is right. That's all this is. A disagreement between him and management. Something we all can salute for an employee standing up for himself. But if he were not a white Englishman, I fear the conversation topics would be far more polarising. And as an Englishman, it saddens me that this thought came to my mind. Apologies if I'm overthinking.

It amazes me that someone like Simon Jordan, to my eyes the epitome of middle class privilege, who I doubt ever faced any adversity in his life, can say with a straight face that Ben White, a person who has overcome real adversity in his life, should show "backbone" and wait for his chance for England. What a muppet.
This conversation is an absolute nonsense. Firstly Benjamin White didn't say he didn't want to play for England, Edu informed that that he didn't wish to be selected at this time. Something has clearly gone on at the World Cup so for Gareth Southgate to come out and say nothing has happened as far as he's aware and doesn't know why there's any apprehension from Benjamin is both cowardly and disingenuous, who would want to play for a manger that wants to preserve themselves and make themselves look good in front of the media than delve into the truth. Why is all the responsibility of the truth coming out being put on the shoulder of Benjamin when it's in the Managers job remit to mange and communicate these situations to the necessary publication. Now in respect to Simon saying if we knew what the issue is would could treat this with more sympathy, well Englands official communication when he left the World Cup squad was "due to personal reason" since then the statement hasn't changed and hasn't been elaborated on, so Simon and all other broadcasters need to be treating this issue with sensitivity as personal reasons have been sighted as to why Benjamin doesn't want to be in the squad. Now talking about he's going to learn and get better being in the England squad. Benjamin Plays in a team that is currently going toe to toe with a great Liverpool team and A World Class Man City team, he trains daily with some world class players and a squad full of internationals under a manger who in most peoples eyes is superior tactically and than Gareth so regardless whether he's in that England Squad or not it would be argued that he's bound to learn more staying with his club than going to England for 2 weeks. The coverage around this has been so disappointing and dangerous, Jim stopped short of threatening a person who's Job requires him to be exposed and judged in front of thousands in stadiums and millions world wide when he said tell us or we're not going to stop. This is no longer reporting but a witch hunt and it's a disgrace it's been allowed to continue! This is getting dangerous now and people need to start to remember their place and level of influence they posses and act accordingly. You're now playing with a young mans career, mental well being and potential physical well being (you can't be sure how people on the street may act after listening to this dross reporting) for entertainment and TH-cam clicks.... Disgusting!
I'm not sure if Danny is just that naive or he is deliberately trying to misdirect fans. Ben White abruptly left the squad in Qatar. He went there knowing Walker and Trippier were ahead of him. He didn't abruptly leave because he suddenly realized he's unlikely to start games. There's obviously something that happened
At the end of the day, Ben has every right to decline the opportunity to represent his country. He doesn’t owe anyone an explanation. We are beyond the days when this was an amateur sport. His career is a business, his body is a commodity, and as the business owner, he has a right to allocate his resources as he sees fit. Complain about the market application all you like, but it’s still not really any of your business.
I see there's no more news other than Ben White 😅! Grown men belabouring the same issue. These are the same people that like to make and take their own decisions sweating over a choice made by someone that really doesn't care. Benny is made even if he stops playing today. Football is just a game, it's not a do or die affair. I came here to just to drop this comment 😂.
1) Kyle Walker could get injured in Quarter finals and White could play massive part as right side of back 3 2) I do not think he gets on with squad 3) I think Holland and White do not get along 4) when England have new coach and set up it is a different story - I think he then will be open to be picked
Time better spent with his family instead of sitting on a bench for Southgate...who knows what went on between them...Southgate has a track record of poor man management....I'm surprised Grealish didn't stick two fingers up to him after his poor treatment.
Simon's argument doesn't make sense... so it's sad that he won't be in the same England team that you consider him a peripheral player in, and apparently it's not much of a loss anyway cuz he's a third rate player? So what's your angle? Also no wonder he agrees with Redknapp cuz they're both nationalist dinosaurs... playing for England doesn't have the same lustre as it used to, especially when you're travelling across the world and using up energy to sit on the bench when you can maintain full fitness to play for the club you play an active part in
Ben White is objectively a better player than some of the players that Southgate plays ahead of him, he's wasting his time going on international duty with Southgate. leave him alone, he knows his own value and has enough respect to hold others to account.
Keep spinning those narratives and no you’re not entitled to know and perhaps Simon, if you don’t want to waste time with him, then have some conviction and tell your producer to not cover the subject anymore. 😴
Simon Jordan is right, trust is incredibly important in football, he just forgets that trust has to go both ways. Ben White's consistency playing for a top tier Arsenal team proves he's a player that can be trusted, and Arteta is ruthless with who plays for him. His reaction to his first call up makes me believe in his pride and passion for England, but he also doesn't abide any fools. If he thinks the England coaching staff are a bunch of clowns, he's #3 after Walker and TAA at RB, not getting a sniff at CB because Maguire has some blackmail on Southgate or something, I understand not wanting to risk injury in training and all the travel when you got a chance to rest during a title race and UCL.

Danny Murphy making a very logical argument and Simon just getting aggressive again. Horrible man
Idk why everyone keeps talking about Ben white not dealing with “hardship” of international football. It’s CLEARLY a personal issue with Southgate and his staff!
Which is insane cause this is the same Ben White who made it up the ranks from Newport County, Peterborough, Leeds, Brighton to Arsenal slugging it out in League 1 and Championship. Clearly he knows how to fight his way to the top no matter the challenges

Hi Ben White's family or friend.
Seems very logical to me. White is tougher than most people think. He even know knows already that he will get abused in the league but is determined to take it.
He would clearly rather spend his summer on the beach
representing your country isn't necessarily the most important thing for many footballers, people need to get over it.

If he doesn’t want to go what’s the problem lol
Maybe he should of said that before letting down his team mates down in Qatar
Ben white is a hero!
For winning nothing in his career
It’s funny how many of these same pundits and fans criticising White will also moan when players from other countries go play internationals when it might impact their clubs.
Southgate picks Maguire regardless. James, Tripper, Arnold, Walker, even Shaw at right back would be played ahead of White despite White being on the best form and having a partnership with Saka for his club
despite White being on the best form and having a partnership with Saka for his club who between them have won fcuk all in their careers
Yeah, Danny Murphy almost hits the nail on the head but - he knew the other players in his position were better than him! - White is not in the same position. BW is better than 90% of the England backline and still will not play!
Southgate can go do one.
I very very rarely seek to make a racial comment on TH-cam because it will always be twisted and assumed the worst.
