Panel de ’Pot: Great Soccer [JP] / Great Golf [JP] / Fushigi no Oshiro Pit Pot | Segaiden

  • Sega didn't publish a lot of Mark III titles in Japan but not America-just about everything the company released for its home territory always made its way to the U.S. Segaiden/Master System Works will be examining the handful of exceptions, which adds up to roughly a dozen games over the course of the Mark III's lifetime. Not all of these Japan-exclusive titles are worth playing, but you'll find enough interesting oddities here to merit some cursory exploration.
Case in point, this episode. Although Great Soccer (not to be mistaken for the completely different game that shipped in America as Great Soccer) doesn't have much to offer the world, Great Golf (again, not our Great Golf) is a very different and quite enjoyable take on the sport, while Fushigi no Oshiro Pit Pot (not strictly a Japan-exclusive since it did show up on a European combo cart) scratches a primal action-RPG puzzle-dungeon exploration itch that The Legend of Zelda would properly treat with a metaphorical calamine poultice a few months later. Two out of three ain't bad... unless we're talking about how the U.S. missed out on two pretty good early Mark III games, in which case, it's kinda bad.
    Production notes:

The blueprint for Great Golf JP was almost certainly "Albatross" by Telenet, which came out in February '86 for the Japanese 8-bit micros, and seems to have been reasonably popular, given that multiple expansion packs were released for it. Given Sega's grueling console development schedule, 10 months is more than enough time to develop their own take on it for consoles. Gameplay and presentation are *extremely* similar, with the most significant change being that Albatross uses three timed button presses for each swing, the first two determining where on the X and Y axes you hit the ball, and the third determining power. In Great Golf these first two timed hits are simply replaced by a free-targeting crosshair. Also in Albatross, being a computer game, you don't have a handy on-screen indicator of the maximum range for each club, and instead have to refer to the manual, but it's no worse than Nintendo's Golf in that regard.

What I took from all this is that sports games for these early 8-bit consoles are an unexpectedly complicated affair, just not gameplay wise, and the identity of Alex Kidd's brother! Now I wonder if the remake has any references to the knight from Pit Pot.

Jeremy, unrelated to video games...have you ever written or created a video covering music that you like? I get a sense that you're a big music fan as I recall you name-dropping a few bands over the years but have never seen you expand on that. I have a hunch you're a post-punk fan for some reason...Wire, Joy Division, The Chameleons, Echo & The Bunnymen, etc. but I could be wrong.

i'm wondering how much the tile layouts in pit pot are hints as to where to go and what to do -- i've noticed the tiles make up the word GO on what i think is the first screen, and i've also seen kanji for "right" 右, "up" 上, and "gate" 門 in other screens. there's also images of a skull, car, and heart..... i dunno, i've never heard of this game but it looks really appealing to me in a way that druaga doesn't
