“…one incident can’t define a person’s entire life”, unless it forever alters another persons entire life. Then it must.
True! One incident CAN define a person's life, fortunately or unfortunately. There is an actor in a show I loved who, in a fit of rage, killed his wife. He's serving a life sentence. Boom! One incident=a life defined. Maybe he's a nice guy in prison, but it's too late; he can never take that moment back. He can never make up for the fact he took someone's life from them, from their family and loved ones, from all the potential she had for years to come. We don't get a do-over.

I was working as a nurse, on a state run psych unit that was double secure entry. I was assaulted by a client, received 4 direct punches to the right side of my face, specifically the right TMJ, which fractured the joints condyle head, shifting my jaw to the left, displacing the discs on both joints, causing a closed locked jaw. Since the date of injury, which will be 40 years ago April 2024. I’ve had 5 surgeries, between both sides, lost all of my upper teeth, most of my lower teeth. I have constant clenching of the muscles, causing spasms and never ending pain. There are no more options available, other than continuing on pain management. The client was placed into a group home within 3 weeks of the incident, I lost my job, career, received minimal compensation and have a permanent disability. My injuries were and are life altering. Many days I can’t do what should be normal activities, because of the pain. Police would not detain the client, instead put him back into the care of the state. My assailant was never held accountable, there was no ability to sue him or the state. I wish I had had a judge like this when the hearing for my compensation was held, I was thrown away to deal with the pain and try to move on. As I write this we are in a snow storm, my jaw is clenched, muscles are tight and I’ve got a severe headache and I can’t take another dose of pain med for 3 hours. 40 years of this is exhausting. I feel for the judge that was so severely injured, as she will never be the same again. When the assailant is not held accountable, it is the one assaulted that pays the price and a life long sentence. This girl got off easy, although I’m sure she does not think so.

I have been an RN for 28 yrs. You can't sue him or the state, because he is not responsible for his actions, due to his diagnoses. If he is in a state psychiatric hospital, then that means he has serious mental health issues. We nurses have been physically attacked by those with mental illness or dementia many times. We are taught how to prevent, deescalate, and block, but sometimes they catch us off guard. I'm sorry it happened to you, but we can't sue our patients. We can only get worker's compensation. I had my ankle broken in two places by my ex, and I now have CRPS, which is the most painful syndrome known. I am on pain meds, but they don't really help. I currently work full time as an RN (plus on call) with IDD clients, but I can no longer do floor work. I can't afford not to work. My husband died when I was 36 yrs old, so I was the sole breadwinner for my family. Our son was 7 yrs old when he died, and he has ADHD and Autism, so I need to take care of him. He is 22 yrs old now. He doesn't collect disability. I never signed him up for it, nor myself. I took a paycut to do my (mainly) sitdown job. I never thought to sue my ex for breaking my ankle, although the court ordered him to pay me $5000 for hospital bills. I will never see it. He still stalks me ten years later. Sometimes people need to know they will never get money from someone. This is one of those cases. The judge isn't going to get $1 million from a single mother of four children.

True, but that does need to be taken into account. It shows that this is more likely a one time incident and she has learned from it versus she just doesn't care and will continue in her bad behavior.

Judge has a very calm, direct demeanor. She keeps total control of the proceedings.

Most of them are mad they got caught. It's unnatural for humans to full accept and repent their actions. Don't believe me? What's your first response to being accused of something. Do you accept it or do you make up an excuse/deny it. For most it's the latter.
It takes time to repent, and it usually requires consequences.
She was a single mom with all those amazing qualities when she decided to drink and attack someone. So she made that choice. She probably bragged about beating a judge's ass since then, so you did your sewing now you can do the reaping.
The idiom and Biblical passage is "You reap what you sow."
That is, sow good/bad seeds and reap good/bad harvest. In this case, bad actions led to bad consequences.

The fact she was a judge ( the victim) means nothing. She was another person on the planet, which is how Judge Boyd is obligated to view it. If she was a fast-food worker or an ex-con on disability just standing in the elevator means no difference to the sentence. It was both their faults. The husband of the judge spurred it on by telling the defendants friend to f. Off and get off the elevator already. That being said, she shouldn't have hit anyone. And she now has to live with it. I'd never be friends with the hot head she was with after this.
Covid was a b..ch for sure. Most people lost their minds on 1 level or another.
I'll always remember a teacher in 5th grade who tried to teach us about the perception of " have" and " have nots". I, by chance, landed in the " have not" group. I was pissed for sure! I even had a parent teacher conference about my behavior regarding that. I never hit anyone, and I was 10 or 11.
But this was her and her friends have vs have not moment. Perceived or real don't matter.

Completely unfair. She has no priors. She was hit trying to help the husband. No way I would've said ok to this judge. It's a conflict of interest since she works with the other judge.

"Well, this was a first offence, so we'll go easy on you." Nope, when your actions hurt other people, you don't get a break. Also, if every professional recused themselves because they once spoke to or worked with a person involved in a case, there are some jurisdictions that would be severely wanting for judges, lawyers, etc.

Judge Boyd is having real problems getting this woman to say what happened. Part of the deal is that she accepts responsibility, but she wants to play around because she's being sued. Most of the time the lawyer is testifying for the defendant, and he's not being completely honest.
She will more than likely lose that civil case, she better start working overtime and save up a million dollars

You hit the nail on the head. It’s the fact that she hit a judge. Had she hit an average citizen it would have been different. Had the judge hit her for no reason of any kind. No f’n way judge is convicted of a felony, probably not charged at all!
The amount of justice you receive is typically based on the amount of $ you can afford to spend.

The fact that the injured party is a judge has nothing to do with the case. It would be relevant if the defendant knew she was attacking a judge and that knowledge had a bearing in deciding to attack.
Frankly, given that the attack was totally unwarranted, there were injuries and all of this took place in the of presence of children is enough to deserve a severe penalty.

The real issue is that she assaulted someone, causing serious injuries, and leaving permanent damage. It seems her victim wasn't engaged in the fight, so no mutual combat. That is, in an argument between 2 parties, folks in the wrong attack the folks rightly in the elevator. One victim, the complainant, happens to be a judge who is acquainted with the judge presiding this case.
When did it say she was in the elevator?

Another comment states that they were rejected by 2 previous elevators, and lost patience. They resorted to violence after both parties got into a heated argument and when the judge's husband stepped out to get in the face of the booted guy. That's what triggered the physical altercation.

@@kennedystarr8094 They aren't different charges if they are assaulted while off duty. If a person has no reasonable knowledge of a person's employment, then they can't claim that for additional charges. It is only when they are in the capacity of their office that the person can be charged for attacking an officer of the court, an officer of the law, etc. Otherwise, that gets too close to entrapment. Any off duty personnel could start trouble, then claim special privileges once someone retaliates.

Being a defense attorney sounds way harder than prosecuting imo. Even obviously guilty clients need a defense, but they're compelled to do more than just sit there and let the facts of the case ring out. So, sometimes, they sound like a fool when they're just doing their job.

I love how Judge Boyd always asks, "is there anything else you need from the Court to be successful?" She's always looking for the best possible chances of rehabilitation.

I was a single mother and also caring for 15 years for my mother until she died at home. Got child support of the minimum for one year, and spent $20k on a lawyer. The dad tormented us. I never hit anyone, even when my sister pushed me down a flight of stairs.
Boyd is plainly the best judge I've ever watched in my years of pro se work and TH-cam armchair lawyering 😊

I’m a huge fan of her work. honest, fair, classy, stylish, and more, she’s a great role model for all.
This judge has the highest respect. She is professional while also being fair. I think she should be an example of what anyone holding a position of authority should aspire to.
This judge should get her own T.V. Show-seriously. Her professional demeanor, fairness and sense of justice should get broader exposure so that would-be criminals and other judges can learn from it.

Judge Boyd is an incredible human being, and I hope she never changes how she does her court room, and in order for that to happen, it should stay as is.

If I was in front of a judge I would be scared to death, some of these people aren't, I'm confused about that, but maybe it has to do with how they are raised, it a shame .
I don't care if there are tears: tears can be faked. What I care about is that she confess what she did, and she refused to do that. She kept trying to minimize what she did, and make it seem as if she was not at fault.
You know she sounds like it is just matter of fact t to start fighting if her friend was in it. She didn’t try to stop a fight but fought. My kids wouldn’t be doing this, they know better. It’s no wonder that kids are growing up thinking fighting is okay. Especially over having to wait on an elevator. Get off yourself if concerned about the weight limit. How much thought does that take. This is extremely stupid and having to have two court cases over this is a waste of time and money. Stupid “adults” that should have known better! If you all live with this all the time, you all need to get a better neighborhood!

I don't think she should allow the civil suit trial to speak to this trial.
Deferred adjudication is probation except at end the charge is dismissed. So if anything DID happen in that 7 years, she would have had the conviction and up to 7 years jail added. Really the only difference between the two is State wanted to make her a convicted felon and Defense wanted to give her a chance to avoid that.
I love this judge due to her common sense and compassion for people as human beings!

That's why her lawyers did most of the talking. A mistake here can help the plaintiff in the $1M civil case against her. Her only admission is that she instinctively "helped" her friend. She didn't admit she pinned down the judge and pummeled her, even though the judge didn't physically assault her.

Because we fail in making people accountable - why should the mother think ahead that her behaviour may affect her children negatively? She knows she can just try and leave it to the state to be lenient just because she never figured out how to use birth control or abstinence.

Tell me if I got this straight: elevator was full. Defendant and her group, who had drinking at a ball game earlier that day, pushed on it anyway and were told the elevator exceeded capacity and they'd have to get off. The ball game group started hitting the elevator group, and the judge was punched multiple times and was either pushed or fell out of the elevator. Defendant came towards the judge, but it's not clear if she then hit the judge. Judge had broken bones, I'm guessing it was her nose. That sound about right?

Thank you for the full story. I am 15 minutes into it and everyone is dancing around the issue. The Judge is usually must more straight forward and I think she was bias to the defendant and went for the softball approach.
What everyone may have missed is that the defendant and her party were already kicked off two previous elevators...this was the third one that they were trying to take, and even though it wasn't truly 'at capacity', due to Covid the elevator attendant restricted the limit to 7 people. The defendant and her two people followed the others into the elevator and were then told to get out. A guy in the defendants party asked for a supervisor. The attendant pushed the button to stop the elevator and that angered people in the judges party (the 7 that had gotten on first). I would guess that's when 'words were exchanged' and the judges group got ugly, calling names and spewing venom to the man who asked for a supervisor. The judges husband then got off the elevator and got in the man's face, and the fight started. Others jumped in, the defendant was struck and in turn, threw a punch that landed on the judges face. I think everyone had been drinking, or the judges people wouldn't have started off with the name calling and foul language (since their kids were present)...but we all know what alcohol adds to a fight! The defendant should have named the person who hit her, so that those people could have gotten arrested. But the judge probably got to give her groups 'story' first. I think they were ALL in the wrong, and either arrest them all or none at all....but the defendant is not a judge, so..... I think it was wrong to sentence her to be a convicted felon for giving someone a bloody nose. And to try to say this judge will live with these injuries her whole life is just ridiculous. It was a broken nose (or not) for gosh sake!
@@user-ff9xt9gu2y well, I don't know, I wouldn't presume the intoxication on both parties as this certainly was tested, so I think you crossed the line there jumping to favouritism for the victim-judge. As for the medical results of the assaults judges usually see medical reports, so I would give this judge a benefit of the doubt - she's experience, she's heard many cases, too dramatic description or minimizing the injuries will not sway her judgement.
I don't believe in violence, I believe in forgiveness, and if someone paid, did time, then let it go and move on!🙄
She should have thought about that BEFORE she attacked someone. Does her victim have children? What a wonderful role model for those 4 kids. Duh. She beat someone up because of an elevator.

She may have pled guilty but did not take accountability. The fact she’s a 4x mother and has a civil case pending means nothing. They were asked to exit the elevator and got pissy about it when they were drunk. Everything after that is one them. When you’re an adult who behaves like a child, you will face consequences.

Jesus. What on earth did she do to that woman to give her life-long injuries? That's horrible. It's also horrible that the DO is seeking sympathy by saying she's a single mother. He kept repeating it over and over as though it excuses what she did. If anything, it makes it worse. She wasn't thinking of her children in that moment, she wasn't being a good role model or parent when she assaulted this woman. Whether that's alcohol or temper, I don't know, but being a mother certainly didn't enter he mind when she was hurting that other woman. Being a mother doesn't mean you're a good person or a good parent. It's just a statement of fact. To try and use that as an excuse is appalling. I'm glad she has to take parenting classes at the very least.
it is most likely bullshit.. trying to get a large payday, she is still working as a judge, didn't seem to have to spend any time in hospital in any serious way, the judge just saw dollar signs is all and got some doctor to write it up to look as bad as possible

Trying to use the civil suit against the victim was really below the belt. As if the injured judge will get any 'relief' from the criminal trial, she knows how the system works. Defendant is just a lying, out of control d-nozzle.
