    From what i see other than the resource minis and the metal coins, the other items in the special edition hurt the gameplay to where i don’t think it’s worth it to get the special edition. The boats are large and the removable decks are awkward. Not sure how getting resources on and off it is going to be like. Also the minis on the main board can obstruct the roles and the trading house which will be hard for people on that side of the table. The worker minis seem waaay overkill and may be awkward getting to the worker area from the supply. For gameplay the standard is my go-to and what I’m pledging (with playmat), but if you want to sacrifice a bit of convenience, the special edition does look very nice.
    On another note i’m not sure if the standard edition will go to retail, the non-mini version of castles of burgundy hasn’t been a retail item to my knowledge and i can’t imagine retailers stocking the standard when they can get a larger margin on the special edition.
    Edit: I also just remembered that the size of the game will be smaller with the standard version which i know was a big issue for castles of burgundy. Hopefully they keep the box size reasonable with this one.

    I actually love the ships. I think the removable decks to allow for variable player counts is a good idea. And the amount of complaints I see about how hard it will be to get crates off… I just don’t see it. The crates don’t go to the edge, and the front of the boat has such a small lip that even chubby fingers should be able to grab them.

    I was originally going to get the Standard pledge (i.e. wait for retail), but the boat upgrades with all the little slots for the goods eventually convinced me to move up to Special Edition. I'm also adding the acrylic tiles because I think that will be a nice deluxification that will also make the field tiles and role tiles more durable as they get handled a lot in the game. I'm specifically not getting the merchant pledge because I very much don't want the playmat because playmat storage is no fun, so I might as well save a few bucks in doing so. I *am* considering getting the San Juan add-on as well because I love that game and $15 is honestly a good price for it, but I'm not sold on that yet and want to see how it's been upgraded as well.

    I haven't fully decided, but I'm actually leaning toward the standard version that you're pushing away from. Reason being that I don't think all those worker/ship/produce minis are necessary, but I am partial to the play mat and acrylic tiles. Just wish they would take my moolah for metal coins, too, oh well (FAQ says coins are only available in the special edition).

      We are on the same page. 100 worker minis is crazy, I barely pull out my Warhammer set that's less. The huge boats and goods just looks so tedious to setup. I wish they had the core with the metal coins. But im going with the standard.

      @@Brianadfl Yeah, so many tiny little snotling sized minis, and don't forget 100 plus another 20 wine colored ones for the expansions! If I find myself playing lots and loving the game at, say, 8.5 or so, I'll figure out how to come up with so custom bling for the discs & square produce bits for myself.

    I still lean towards the standard edition and hope they will give dual layer boats as one of their stretch goals. Ideally screen printed crate for the goods as well.

    Thanks for the review, this helped me a lot, and I finally decided to go for the merchant level, having acrylic tiles definitely seems like a really neat idea, my old Puerto Rico broke after many plays.
    Question: how do you ask for the sun drop minies? I couldn't find an option for that in the pledge.

    • @GameBrigade
      @GameBrigade  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you click "add to pledge" there is a section that says "grey" for the miniature. If you click that drop down Sundrop is $35 additional for that selection.

    I look at it this way. I would by the mini version if I want to bling out my edition for I would want it for the looks. My play edition would just be standard. That is just me. I collect and bling out games for my collection. But still have copies for just general play

    I'll think about that one in the next week, deluxe is very nice! Being pretty new to boardgames (fell in love with the hobby with Lost Ruins of Arnak in 2020), i never played Castles of Burgundy and Puerto Rico😄 I'm waiting on my CoB pledge, didn't even read the rules or watch a video because it looks like everybody is loving the game so much i had to take it 😅 Puerto Rico seems like a nice choice in this range of not really complex & not too long games that you can play with most people.

      Take a look at the 1897 version, significantly cheaper and looks similar

  • @MattWGAllan
    @MattWGAllan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You don't cover it up in CoB, you just replace it entirely, so if you use the cardboard tokens, you can just keep them to the side as a reminder of your abilities after purchasing them.

      I use the 3d terrain almost every time I play. My 10 year old and non gamer wife has had zero issues knowing what builds are what. The 3d terrain was well thought out. It's 100% unnecessary but I love it.

    So here my hot take. Same as it was with CoB. If you like and want the table presence to be super deluxe. Back it. I went all in on CoB. I have zero regents. I use the 3D terrain almost every time i play. Yes its not necessary. But its awesome. It takes me 2 minutes longer to set up. And less than 5 minutes longer to put it all away. It hasnt made the game harder at all and ive even taught the game using the 3D terrain. Every person ive played with loves the 3d terrain and says it makes the game more fun because of the table presence. Cheers and hope everyone plays lots of games as ofter as you can. I'll probably be going all in on Puerto Rico as well. I no its unnecessary but i like what im seeing. 🎉

      I went all in, was torn between 3D terrain and acrylic but opted for both. Once I get them I will choose which ones I will keep but at least this way I have an option to go either way. Might just end up loving both and keeping both. Who knows.

    Im not a big fan of PR. But this looks so good. I think the building actual wont hurt game play that much. Since they sit next to their abilities. Its not needed, but i think it will play better than castle of burgundy.
    You will use a ton of coins every round in pr. the metal coins is nice and will be missed if you just get the cardboard ones. I'm shocked they dont show or emphasize victory point since that is one of the end game condition and you need them to win. The victory points need to be acrylic.

    I got the terrain pack in Castles of Burgundy. Completely unnecessary, but I love it. Since I’m a completionist whore, and I like the CoB terrain pack, I think I’ll end up going all in.

      Same. I love the 3D terrain. It adds a minute or 2 to the set up, for tear down it adds about 4 to minutes. It looks super on the table. If I end up backing this it'll for sure be the all in.

    I see no "quality of life" improvement in this deluxified edition. If anything the buildings on your board hinder your gameplaying. Puerto Rico is a fantastic game. If you wish to get it I strongly suggest the 2020 (2nd printing) edition. For about 40$ you got the base game + all the expansions up tp this last GF one, the best of which being the new buildings, the one you really want to have.

    I'd say take a closer look at the 1897 version and then back at this one. I don't think the minis help this game out at all. They remind me of the game After the Empire, where the KS version had these small minis that constantly fell over and I felt hurt the gameplay over the cubes. Also some recycled art, and not sure if the ship minis are really needed, they're just glorified slots to put resources. I feel like there was more value with the Castles of Burgundy version that they did a few years back.

    I would never back this thing in the delux version. The game is good but not that great to buy this stuff, if you like it buy the standard version not more and only buy it if you really like the game. all the shiny stuff is more hindering the gameplay then helping it.
