I have one of these and my partner and I both have a key. Just the other day, maintenance came to my apartment unannounced, while I was working from home. They knocked several times and said "maintenance". I was about to open the door, but then I decided to see how the situation would play out if they thought I wasn't home. So after yelling "maintenance" a couple more times and knocking, they decided to use their key to enter my unit. As soon as they noticed there was a chain on the door, they immediately closed the door back and locked it. See, when the chain in on and someone tries to come in with a key, then they will automatically think that someone is home.

Yes, you shoud be able to get a copy made of the key for this item. It uses the ILCO 1098M key blank (B1 keyway).

Yes, but you may have to pre-drill the holes a little larger for the screws. When screwing into wood, the screw can expand the hole quite a bit as it goes in. With a metal door/frame, there's no expansion.
I would try th 3/32" drill bit, but if you're having a hard time screwing in the screws, move to the next size up drill bit.

Thank you for the compliment. We film these in hopes of showing how easy it is to install some of the products that people might otherwise hire someone to do.

Does the installation work the same if you have a metal door?

If the lock is installed properly, you can't just reach in and unlock the chain. Opening the door pulls the chain on the door side to the left, keeping it in it's slot, and locked.

Hello Leo.....I'm looking at this video from frame one minute and eleven seconds...it seems like someone could reach in with an electric or hand driven ratchet type screwdriver and unscrew the mounting plate from the door frame.....how can this device defeat this easy to obtain piece of equipment and stop a burglar/thief or "anyone" wanting to gain entrance from reaching in and just unscrewing the mounting screws from the door frame; and doing this rather quietly to gain entry to your home without your knowledge.....shouldn't there be some type of face plate flashing placed over these screws to make this process harder to accomplish? Thanks for your help as I'm trying to find something to lock my bedroom door; as I sub-lease my room from the main renters of this property where I live!!!

It could also be cut with bolt cutters. This is a secondary lock. Primarily used for when there are people at home. Chain locks, bar locks etc. should never be used as a primary lock. You should think about installing a regular deadbolt, or Segal surface mount deadbolt.

Sorry for not being a little more descriptive with my question......This is a temporary security system for an inner door....a woman has a room in a house/apartment she is renting....she wants a way to keep people from coming and going in her room while she's out of it. She wanted something not as harsh (for an inside door) looking as say a deadbolt lock system......but still a way to keep people just from getting into her room (say when she had to step out to smoke a cigarette, or use the house's facility) and would secure her room temporarily....just making it a little harder for the owners (or who-ever) in the house, to go into her room when she wasn't there ........And removing the safety chain screws would be a way to be "sneaky" and go into, and through her room while she wasn't there....therefore I wanted to know if there was a different kind of unit available that would hide, at least some of, the screws; thereby making stealthy entrances just a little harder???

Ken Honeycutt You could use one-way (Tamper Proof) screws to mount the lock. These require a special tool to remove them. Local hardware store probably won't stock these, but you can find them online.

That’s one of those devices that give false security. You can defeat it with a rubber band and tape or just kick the door open.

The point here is that someone you know may be coming into your place or bedroom when you are not in.

You can kick any door open, by that logic.

That was a great install instruction. I love mine..and have this on my apt door. But I think the maintenance manager knows how to slide the chain off without the key. I tried doing this but cannot. Is it possible if a person is skilled?? This guy is pretty darn smart mechanically. I put scotch tape on my door to see if it would be broken when I came back home and one time it was.. so someone is randomly entering my apartment. And it's not a family member either. I just installed cameras now so I will catch the azzhole soon (pretty sure it's the creepy maintenance guy...nothing is ever stolen but I have purchased a RF bug detector to scan for spy camera or other shit that may have been planted by him. What disgusting world! 🧐
