You know, submarines don't typically have open hatches on the top, they have a way to close them. I would suggest a tarp at the very least, considering you guys don't have the equipment to seal off all air.

Why didn’t you make the “hatch” part of the entrance which would have helped with stopping the water from getting in
Next time you do a long challange in a submarine in intense heat, have some sort of cooler for ice+Gatorade and also have oranges to keep scurvy away. :)
