    I think one really positive aspect that was skimmed over a bit is that Type A's tend to *love* their jobs. Because how many people can say that? Their passion to succeed makes then successful, yes, but it's not empty success, it's genuine fulfillment and pride in doing something they enjoy. It's an underappreciated characteristic, considering how many people feel unsatisfied with their professions.

      I absolutely agree! A full-fledged Type A Woman has completely realized their desires in life; a juvenile could merely understand how others define them for her. At least from my experience

      @@Sweethearts4969 Agreed. Many of the jobs I have been able to get where I'm located have been disappointing and not at all what I imagined I'd be doing, and that lack of satisfaction has also decreased my general level of conscientiousness. In the middle of a career change now, so I can have guaranteed work I will actually like.

    I hate how this trope has been such a joke. I feel it's just men lauging at the fact that women have to try really hard to earn respect at their jobs and do all the work but still get overshadowed by male coworkers. Amy Santiago is a better cop than Jake Peralta, Hermione is a better witch than Harry Potter, but they portray them as just "trying to hard but just not having that natural talent". I think it's a sexist trope honestly. Miranda priestly or Elle Woods aren't part of the "neurotic" trope because their characters aren't a joke, they are positive portayals of the hardworking women.

      H really is trying too hard. she was the classic unbearable grind in the first movie and has been described as 'lonely, but doesn't get how to make friends'
      Elle woods is deffo neurotic at times - she actually experiences an arc and has moments of self doubt. she's just in here because she's also big on conscientiousness but isn't so mired in neuroticism that it undoes her work.
      the trope isn't really sexist, rick moranis fits this in a lot of his roles, he just tends to play comedy so the treatment is different

      You make a good point, but I wouldn't call Amy a better cop than Jake. Amy, Jake, Rosa, Charles and everyone are equal as cops - they're just _different_ in their approach and skills. If Jake tried it Amy's way, he'd fail. If Amy tried it Rosa's way, she'd fail.
      (Except for Hitchcock and Scully - those two are just comedically useless, lol.)

    *Please talk about close platonic relationships between women and men in film and television!*
    Examples: Harry and Hermione from HP, Olivia and Elliot from Law and Order, Ellie and Paul from The half of it, etc.
    How society views these relationships as just a building step for a romantic relationship and somewhat forces us to view them as such to the point we can even start to confuse our own feelings when we're faced with similar situations and believe we're ~in love~ with the other person. But some others are insufferable, domineering characters who are utterly unbearable in real life (like Rachel Berry from Glee). I've worked with people like the latter in the past - they're not just ambitious winners, they're aggressive and can be very toxic to collaborate with. I kinda think you missed the point with Britta and Annie dynamics.
    They don't exchange their roles, they find their own path and inner true self. Annie gains self-confidence, but she never turns into a Cool Girl. In the Labyrinth episode she's still her type-A self as in many other ones. A confident and Leslie-like.
    Britta starts revealing her uptight, passionate, caring and idk alive side from the middle of season 1, then she just gets more quirky and loses the role of the carrot for Jeff's development. Which is good.
    And the reason Jeff never seriously falls for Annie isn't her type. It's first of all her age and the issues he has.

    • @somethingcooliguess
      @somethingcooliguess 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In the episode where they film Abed’s sci-fi movie, I kind of loved that Annie was over-sexualizing herself and Britta was so annoyed. I had to pause and think about it. Annie never expressed feminist views and in fact is pretty traditional.
      As a feminist, it was confusing to see a highly intelligent, driven woman who does not carry that view. It was nice to see a different combination of traits that still feels true to Annie. And that she has a different view than Britta or else it would seem that the show itself has a bias/view rather than each character.

    "Stems from an era when women had very little power / control in their lives"..... ohhhhhh the baggaaahhhhge. It's true Type A's are inspiring, I've been called one myself. But They can run themselves ragged. Even Hermione had done this when she was thirteen. And decided to make some sacrifices in her life to prioritize what she felt was most important to her, instead of caring about everything all the time. And whay would Harry and Ron do without Hermione? They'd die. They'd die multiple times a semester. It's healthy to think of your strong traits as just that - your strong traits. And when you do excess of a good thing, it can be bad, for you, for others.

They’re often successful in their careers and their perfection over everything really got my attention. I guess I’ve always thought of myself as high maintenance , super quirky and passionate (mostly because my friends always tell me so), and the trope has encouraged me to be as ambitious and driven as them. But the thing with the trope is that it’s often a joke and often normalizes ocd or anxiety as essential attributes. Hardly any Latinas, Arabs, Indians, Polynesians, Asians, etc. I've seen beautiful representation of Jewish woman as always fashionable, tough, sexy, but also poised, as well as light-hearted, sometimes driven, sometimes easy-going, sometimes magical, sometimes straight, sometimes gay: Katy Kane as Batwoman, Fran Fine in The Nanny, Ilana Glazer and Abby Jacobson in Broad City, Frances "Baby" Houseman in Dirty Dancing, Cher Horowitz in Clueless, Dharma Finkelstein in Dharma & Greg, Grace Adler in Will & Grace, Beverly Goldberg in The Goldbergs, Willow Rosenberg in Buffy, Midge Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ronit in Disobedience, Rhoda Morgenstern on Rhoda, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl and EVERY other character Barbara Streisand has played. My only issue with this video is they say that this woman is "undeniably high maintenance" because she nags about commitment, cares if you leave the dishes in the sink, and obsesses over her career. Let's reconsider our definition of high maintenance... Personally, being concerned about your career and wanting commitment from your partner are NOT qualities I would label as high maintenance. High standards does not equal high maintenance. And actually, I'm down to just get rid of this idea of "high maintenance" altogether.

    I am exactly this kind of person (although I've been working on taking things more lightly) and I love Amy Santiago and Monica Geller (Leslie and Hermione get on my nerves at times), but I think there's another reason this trope is female and comes from these 1950s-ish family shows. This is the wife you had to be. The mistress is always nagging on you, right? Well, that's because she has to keep the perfect house and family for you. Women who did not bother so much with these things were not model wives. The early career woman version also reflects extra pressure on women: how often did women who were not perfectionists and workaholics get positions higher than a secretary? Men could be laid-back naturally talented bosses, but would a woman get ahead without struggling and demanding recognition in the 1980s? Even nowadays, it's not very common.
    This is why I especially dislike the natural pairing with the man-baby, because you know in reality she is being a mom-wife. Unless they develop the couple as the man raising himself up to match her and the woman realizing she can calm down a little because there's someone dependable with whom she can share the burden and have fun. I really like how Leslie was paired with another ambitious grown-up, who made a lot of sense for her.

    • @samriddhigupta5514
      @samriddhigupta5514 ปีที่แล้ว

      This pairing trope of a man baby with a type A girl gets broken a bit down by the end of Brooklyn nine nine when Jake leaves the job in order to raise their son while Amy moves ahead with her career. He still is childish( his spending habits) and chaotic, but if you see closely Amy does chaotic things too although with a bit of patience or lack thereof. And I am just so happy that a sitcom is headed by a Type A girl in Parks and Recreation ( and if you consider Monica as fulcrum of Friends) .

    Doing what you love most brings out the type a in you, if you’re lucky to find your true passion soon or at all, i’m sure more people could fit under this type

    ambition + anxiety is probably the most realistic portrayal of women...i cant speak for all women but i certainly accredit my drive to my anxious fear of failure

    I really admire Type A women because I'm such a Type B and I feel like I could benefit from being a little more Type A.

    Thanks for showing Marnie from "Girls" here! I was always thinking that I'm her in so many ways but only seen negative remarks about my girl

    You all should explore mixing in some shots of you actually talk to each other / the camera. It's ultimately more engaging for the audience than 100% voice over stills and clips, so might help you grow your audience even more! It would be nice to connect even more with the folks behind The Take as people expressing their opinions & well thought-out analyses than faceless, nameless, "big brother" voice over...

    Hi could you analyze The Meyerowitz Stories and the implications of how childhood is relevant in adulthood. In addition to how difficult it is for children to admit that parents sometimes act badly

    More love for this trope! From a typically misunderstood type A.

    I recognized this type of personality in Ruth from Snowpiercer (the series). She also becomes very trustworthy, reliable and likable by the end of season 2. Although in the beginning she is almost a caricature, she proves to be someone you really want at your side, when things go down.

    I love this take!
    I think the Type A Neurotic trope as of late, has taken traditionally "annoying feminine" characteristics - like being organized and having colorful binders, or going the extra mile to show your loved ones you care by giving them extravagant gifts - and put a positive spin on it. We're shown that these characteristics are what make women successful - like Amy becoming Sargeant or Leslie winning the election. The fact that they tirelessly immerse themselves in their work puts them ahead of the rest. The neurotic type-A never misses a chance to show her friends that she cares, which allows her to build some of the strongest relationships in her life and results in them ALWAYS having her back.
    As someone whose personality is easily influenced by her media consumption, I wanted to be the "cool girl" for as long as I can remember because that's what the movies portrayed as successful... and likable, in a twisted way. Someone who's naturally good at their career because of their emotionally guarded persona (think Sherlock or House MD). But this trope teaches us that true success and strong relationships stem from caring deeply and working hard (this was actually outlined in one of the Take's videos and it's stuck with me ever since).
    I'm so glad that Leslies, Monicas, and Amys are gaining traction in media because it's taught me to appreciate working really hard to be successful. The toxic traits of these women are not abstracted -which makes them all the more real and "role model"-like. Power to your neuroticism xD

    I have a problem with the constant pushing for this character to 'relax' and be more than the cool girl. Yes, balance is nice but if her traits aren't hurting her, I feel it's ok for her to keep them
