💈 Retro Bavarian Charm Meets Japanese Barber Craftsmanship For A Relaxing Shave & Hairstyling

- Our final video from Japan was at a wonderful old school barbershop where I had a relaxing shave & hairstyling using traditional Japanese methods.
Zangiri barber shop, located just outside Tokyo, has been open for over 50 years and is owned by a husband and wife team. Inside you'll find an eclectic collection of Bavarian inspired art fused with traditional Japanese and vintage collectibles.
The shop name is as unique as the interior, taken from Zangiri Atama, (Zangiri Head), the modern men’s hairstyle in which the traditional topknot was cut off during the Meiji Era.
Mr. Takahashi is 79 and grew up in a barbering family in a remote mountainous region ⛰️ of Akita Prefecture in northern Japan. The rural populations were dwindling limiting the future opportunities as a barber so he relocated to Tokyo and worked for several years before opening this barbershop in 1971.
At the time there was an Akita Prefecture Club in Tokyo where barbers and beauticians could meet and network. This is where Mr. Kakahashi met his wife, Mrs. Toshiko, and they have been in business together ever since 💈❤️
The interior of the shop was originally influenced by Toshiko's family home 🏠 It was a very old thatched roof wooden house full of old things that fascinated Mr Kakahashi. The collections started with old pieces from that family home, then over time changed to European and Japanese artifacts.
The Bavarian look came from their interest in frequenting old coffee houses, long before they had ever traveled to Germany. They liked the look seen in pictures and decided a home with a slightly different appearance, that stood out in the surroundings, would be perfect for them.
The barbershop certainly looks Bavarian on the outside, and some people enter expecting a cafe, surprised once they realize it is a barbershop… all stop and chat for a while.
✨ Mr. Takahashi feels very happy when his customers are satisfied and feel refreshed, and when they say they will visit again.

Thanks so much for watching our final video from Japan 🙏🏼 Zangiri Barbershop is over 50 years old and is owned by a husband & wife duo. This eclectic shop is full of interesting collections and stories. Huge THANK YOU to Mr. Kajikawa from the barber museum in Misasa for recommending this barbershop to us 💈❤
We would love to hear from you so let us know in the comments what you like or find interesting about this shop 😊
Haven't seen a haircut in two months, but your hair appears cut. Did I miss it?
More subtitules from videos please ☹️😡
Is would be darn near perfect if not for the barbers sniffles. Wish you could go back when he doesn't have a runny nose. 😂
Hi Chris - the haircut was from Yamaguchi Barbershop: th-cam.com/video/wY9k2GG2AXg/w-d-xo.html 💈 The videos from Japan were filmed closer together however due to all the time that goes into editing, the videos take a lot longer to publish :)
@lupitogarcia9551 We are working on that 👍🏼
I’ll be honest - I usually skip the hair drying part of videos because I find the noise too harsh, but this one was actually really nice! The blowdryer was more like a low white noise and I actually really liked it! Wonderful video as always!
Same!
Interesting, a lot of the time the blow drying is one of my favorite parts, especially when they are styling. Harry finds a way to please us all :)
@@chrisk5791 yeah I usually like softer smoother sounds but everyone has their kink 😁
Agreed! It sounds so nice.
@@shawndon7374everyone has things they prefer to *hear
Love these older gentleman still cutting hair after all these years. Master of their craft
The sound of the rain on the roof is perfectly matched by the glorious old style of shop. Peace and quiet. A place i could easily fall asleep in. Thanks harry for sharing
You allow us to see the most interesting barbers and their shops. This is certainly one of the best. Thank you.
Wow thanks - glad you liked this one! We loved this amazing old school shop too 💈🙌🏼
I love re-watching this one, I can't get enough of his attention to details and trying to make his hair look perfect.
Fun fact: this barber has the same hairdryer than the female barber in the 5th generation traditional Japanese video published 4 year ago.
Now that is a fun fact! Thank you!
Harry's Japan tour has been fantastic. I could watch these endlessly.
Just in time. Great looking shop. All these Asian barbers have a unique style which adds to the video. Hope all good with you Harry.
Harry's stoicism is remarkable, and yet, he has an uncanny ability to express his satisfaction with unquestionable clarity.
He’s a marvel, nobody else can simultaneously be the ultimate conduit for pampering and be the very likeable host.
He’s like a very organised and professional sloth.

The thumbnail made you look like my aunt franny...lol. this was a great video! 👍
😂😂😂
The intricate woodworking detail of the shop is amazing!
It gives me extra confidence when the barber has a great head of hair.
Could it be a wig?
@sebastianschmidt3869 No, his head of hair is no wig
Also age 79
I noticed people from back in the day had more hair than the newer generations. Is it the things we eat or the air we breathe or the water we drink?
@@dragonballtorture I think it's just your confirmation bias.
exquisitely enjoyable/relaxing with the ambient sound. I knew you were going to get good haircut when I saw the Barber's haircut. Plus the electric massager was one of the best I've seen. Those should be required at barber shops 😁
The depth and quality of picture and audio in this video is absolutely top notch. Another Asian super barber. Thanks Harry.
The intricate woodworking. Rhythm of a clock. Even cars driving by outside. Couldnt ask for a better ambiance to a great barber experience.
So many great barbering treasures tucked away in Japan. Thank you for highlighting these places and taking the time to further expand on them in the description 😊
That’s a modified floor buffer. Haha I love it
I thought it was a belt sander when he first brought it out. Lol
Yet again, thank you Harry for top tier ASMR content and to safe so many of us from our stressful days.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏼 Glad the videos are helpful!
@@HairCutHarry Where are you from Harry? sometimes you Aussie mostly you sound British
I dont think I have ever seen a barber hold a straight razer like a pencil. Unique.
Great video. I love when they finish with great hair styling. Also the use of the delicate red cloth was very interesting and not something I've seen before❤
The audio of this video is incredible! The shop is a dream, so calm and cozy, I want to live there! It must be great both visiting and working there. The barber is very careful and detail oriented, just amazing. I struggled with falling asleep and wanting to watch :D
The barbers hands are amazing. Like a piece of art. You can see an entire life in those hands.
The shop aesthetic is probably my favorite I've ever seen.
We loved it too! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
I think you just found the best barber on the entire planet i bet his haircut is on another level 👌
Just by the looks of the shop, there's so much history and stories right in there. Amazing shop.
Another classic video by my main man, Haircut Harry. Not only does this barber have incredible style, he also has amazing talent... and the attention to detail, chefs kiss. Keep up the awesome content Harry. Can't wait for the next clean shave.
Che bello... fantastico.... tutti i barbero shop giapponesi sono molto particolari e alcuni anche stravaganti.❤❤❤

Love Harry’s Japanese accented “thank- you” 😂
Great Video as usual. The rain drops as a "bonus" are just priceless 😊
The craftsmanship is unbelievable. The attention to detail and the mere joy the barber had in his work.....amazing
Thank you for recording during rain. Really adds to the already relaxing video. Barber has a gentle touch
I have to watch this video every night b4 I go to sleep thanks for the relaxing video
I love video !!
Greetings from Mexico !!
Hola! Happy to hear you enjoyed this video 💈🙌🏼
barber gets the award for biggest massage machine
Oh yessssss, I knew it.. i knew this was going to be a good week!!
Thank you Harry
That was a truly amazing journey you madre in Japan. I have been watching your videos since 2020 and they were an amazing way of relaxing in pandemic times. Thank you so much Harry!.
What a lovely barber. ☺️
Yes, it was wonderful to meet him & his wife and hear their stories :)
"Guess what! I got a fever...and the only prescription is more hairspray.".
His hands! Those beautifully pronounces veins and muscles! Jan van Rymsdyk, Leonardo da Vinci and other anatomical artists would have begged to have him as a hand model.
This is a great example of a skilled barber taking his time with a customer. But I'd wager if he had a line of customers or a customer in a hurry, he'd knock out a perfect shave in under 10 minutes.
Love his barber 💈 shop! Absolute master with his blades & hair dryer!! 🇬🇧
Thanks Harry !!
Another master barber doing his work. Can’t wait to see where your travels are taking you next.
Thanks Harry.
For this guy i'd let my bald patches grow.
1.30am here in Melbourne Australia. Couldn't sleep but now after this myveyes feel droopy and ready to shut. Perfect content Harry
Oh wow. My old school Greek barber as a kid did the exact same method with the hair net and the blow drier. I totally forgot about this method and miss those hair cuts as a kid. Hard to find anyone that does this these days. 11/10 enjoyed this
That’s awesome - definitely old school!
Hell of a head of hair for 79 years old, also, thought you were going for the “ Ena Sharpels” look with the hairnet 😂
wow. that guy is a real artist.
Harry I love your vids, literally can't sleep without them. I also love the magic camera tricks, has your camera person ever considered doing an Q&A. I'd love to know how they plan out cutaway shots, especially having to communicate with them with a language barrier.
I would consider a Q&A if there is interest in it 😊 If you are interested in film, a couple TH-camrs I currently follow for filming inspiration are: www.youtube.com/@BrandonLiUnscripted especially for his travel filming and his excellent online course. Also, www.youtube.com/@thechrishau shares a lot of great tips and solid knowledge 😊
Japanese barbers are always my favorite to watch.
Loved the atmosphere of the shop and the camera placement. It truly felt like watching the whole process and what the barber was doing all the time. Thanks for another wonderful video Harry
Thank you for a amazing episode. You knocked it out of the park again. Harry, keep up the good work.
A real close shave. No pre trim with an electric razor. Great work. Nice one Harry
I like to read the stories in the description to the videos. The standard-setting level of professionalism.
Thank you for the video! They are always so enjoyable to watch.
Great to hear you enjoy our videos! So happy we had the opportunity to visit and film at so many awesome barbershops during our time in Japan 💈🙌🏼
What a timing! It's almost 1:30 AM over here, best time to watch your videos and that too a new one.
Thank you Harry, Very good and relaxing video 😴
gotta say, the gauzy cloth trick was fascinating to watch
35:26 sums up my two years in Japan. 😂
Love this one. The clock in the background, the sounds of moving naturally. Brilliant 👏
Love this!!! Always thumbs up first and then watch and enjoy. 👌👌👍👍🍷
Good guy Jason
Thank you so much Jason 🙏🏼❤️ How are you doing? How is Georgia?

Thanks, Harry. I always enjoy seeing your journeys and being able to witness masters of their craft!
In this instance, the shop has some great vibes and decor, and I also liked seeing the bowl he used for the shaving soap/whiskers. That’s a first!
The shop is so quaintly attractive!
The net while using the hair dryer was genius!
