- Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera has verbally declared a disaster emergency after the U.S. Highway 50 bridge over the Blue Mesa Reservoir was closed last week.
The first ten years in Iraq cost as much as rebuilding every outdated state and federal highway bridge in CONUS twice.
The FIRST ten years. TWICE.
But it will be an uphill battle to get funding for the bridges…
@@captiannemo1587 And now that Biden finally got an infrastructure bill passed thru Congress, people are griping about spending. And it’ll be a fight to keep the progress going. We The People are not very bright. 🇺🇸

@@Ry_Guy yeah but the current panic is very much associated with that incident, I think it's been a while since an actual old bridge fell in the US. The overpass in FL and that road bridge were new if I remember.
Apparently quite a lot of bridges were already catagorised as potentially at risk of collapse. I'm sure there was a website where people could check which bridges in their area were dangerous. Unfortunately everyone just seems to be hoping that everything's going to be okay.
If this bridge was used extensively by politicians, it would have been kept up to date.
OH FOR SURE!!!!!!! It’s revolting.
Well now, Republican Tax Cuts "fix all problems", so despite road maintenance and other public infrastructure being among the first line items reduced, we should just believe.

All 50 Republicans and 2 just Democrats (versus 48 Yes Votes from the remaining Democrats) unfortunately defeated the Bill. Republicans were able to bribe the bisexual Democrat (who had to switch to Independent but actually is a quitter because she knows that she will lose re-election) AND Joe Manchin. Now Manchin is so corrupt that he's a Republican but in a State where it's hard for Republicans to win because Voters there have broadband - something EVERYONE would have if Republicans had not defeated BBB - and now, you know "WHY" Republicans didn't want it to pass. Middle of the USA has to rely on the owners of their media and all of it is conservative. I know, I've been there. Broadband would give Voters there a choice. But we all know how much Republicans hate choices, don't we.
The majority of our highways and bridges are now 50 years old and in need of repair. Expect to see more of these developments in the future.
There are bridges everywhere in America that have damage to them and could collapse. There are dozens that have already gone down and only get local attention unless they are on a major highway or someone gets spectacular video and puts it online to go viral.

People refuse to accept that the US does not have the trillions of dollars necessary to systematically repair or replace all their bridges in the country. Those trillions were all given to a tiny handful of individuals and entities over the last 40 years.
Other countries get billions but we only pay
Think of all the non productive people attached to each and every job. Lots and lots and lots of lawyers-consultants-watchers. Used to be paper pushers now it is emailings.
Lol but we can send trillions to other countries...
You must have a list of these individuals. Please post this list!
"Disaster" emergency???? More like emergency closure. Glad they caught it before the "disaster".
I get the sense they have to _call_ it a 'disaster' in order to get repair funding.
"Disaster emergency" is an actual term that enables funding for stuff like this. You can't just go around asking for money everywhere, things have to be formalized and declared.
For people who have a phobia of bridges, it will now just get worse for them.

Steel provided by the lowest bidder... What could possibly go wrong???
Imported
@@woozy607 Not. New high strength product of USS steel in early 1960's meets up with new method of connecting (welding thick plates) meets up with design practice where a single failure might or probably would cause collapse (non-redundant). A combination probably used to allow affordable construction of the longish span necissated by the canyon it is over (built before the resivoir was). Also currently and for a long time foriegn steel is not used in projects built with and US government funds. The bridge design and construction industry does not have 20-20 forsight, but attempts 20-20 hindsight as best possible.
This is what happens when politicians take all the money and not use it for it's purpose.

Why cant they call up the military to put up a temporary pontoon bridge? This is after all, a vital, and only, link for the entire region.
That’s a good idea.
fluctuations in the reservoir levels would make the bridge impractical. plus new approaches' would need to be built to allow the road grade to drop down to water level. currently the grade is considerably above the lake.

That's the money paying the dudes to make the inspections (finally) and making a triage list of what needs to be fixed where and what order.
My family is from western Colorado, back generations. The number of times I’ve driven over this bridge…what a miracle it hasn’t collapsed yet. They’ve done a lot of highway roadwork on 50 for many years, especially west of the reservoir in the canyons, but not on the bridges that I recall. What a shame our tax dollars have gone to politicians’ personal projects for so many years, instead of infrastructure that has been screaming for repairs for years. Politicians will now say they need to increase gas, property, etc… tax to fix our bridges. They’ll just increase pork in the bills for infrastructure projects and leave very little of it for what actually needs done. No accountability…pass the buck.
THIS IS WHAT WE PAY TAXES FOR!!!!!! THIS RIGHT HERE!!!!!!!! Not for corruption!!
US Steel or China steel? Tell the whole story.
No kidding they mention "a specific type" and leave it at that...

That was a CYA all the way around. Blame someone else for your incompetence. F Colorado. The new California.
Yet we can afford to send billions in aid to other countries.
The Roman’s built roads and bridges that are still in use. We can’t make a bridge last 50 years.
😂😂😂 Romans didn’t have anywhere close to the weight that today’s roads have to endure. Just 1 semi truck fully loaded is 40tons . 1 car depending on size 1 - 5 tons . With the 5 tons being a dully pickup.
@@F150customs Romans didn’t build roads or bridges for semis. They built them for pedestrian or carts pulled by draft animals. Their bridges and roads are still around. We built our bridges and roads for semis, they don’t last 50 years.
@@dsg325 the high demands of the roads it would be impossible for them to last 50yrs. But as i say this and you say this, there are plenty of bridges in the USA that are way older than 50yrs. Soooo, there is that.

Drove over this bridge so many times...craziness.
I’m surprised they even looked at the bridge. It doesn’t seem like CDOT notices or even cares about bridges across the state. With pot tax revenue, we should have the best roads and bridges in the country, but no one knows where that money has actually gone🤔.
(Inspects bridge, someone complains about insufficient bridge inspections).
Ukraine and the border jumpers and the FREELOADERSINAMERICA.
The industry is about money laundering. You know that the transport guys in the industry routinely handle 10, 20, sometime as much as 100 thousand dollars? It all moves in clear plastic bags with hand-written notes; anyone can open, manipulate, and than fake it being the original bag of money. They move all that cash in vehicles that often don't have functioning cameras or tracking, operated by fly-by-night companies, in rural areas with poor policing.
In NC we have the high gas tax, and school lottery so they can buy more pot holes in the roads.
CO bought back property taxes one year... they were swimming in that kind of pot money... they wouldn't squander it all :)
All concrete structures in the US including dams and bridges have a 50 year life span when complete, that's it. Most are older than any one wants to know
What has Colorado been doing with the state and federal money for those repairs?!?
That bridge was always a smidge sketchy to me.
Compared to many more modern bridges, it is rather narrow with very little in terms of shoulders or side barriers.
This just sealed my suspicions and opinion on it's cheap design.
Does that not look like it’s already been welded once? Or am I only thinking that because they ground the pain off to make the photo better?
They ground the paint off in order to inspect for further cracks and check material thickness.
Did this failure have anything to do with the draining of the Blue Mesa lake in 2021 and 2022 to fill Lake Powell?
Sorry we got to give the money to Ukraine, not a joke folks!

1) A lot of the "money we send to other countries" is really spent here (in red states mostly) and then the resulting goods are sent to those countries.
2) A lot of that money serves U.S. interests. For example, the money spent in Ukraine (mostly spent in the U.S. creating jobs) is some of the most effective defense spending since world war 2.
This is a massive disruption to the local economy. It's ridiculous that we only have a few ways through the mountains and if something happens to the road close enough for you to use then you're going 7 hours out of your way to get to you destination.

If we took half of what is spent yearly on defence(which is more than the next 25 countries combined, 20 or so are allies) and throw it into infrastructure/education, we could be good again, and up to date, in less than 10 years. right now we are on the same downward spiral we see in north korea, in that defence comes at the cost of caring for their people...
