This was considered by boxing historians as Ali’s last greatest fight in the ring. He won on pure determination. Far past his prime when he faced Shavers. None of his advisors wanted him to take this fight.
Ali could take a punch like no other fighter in history could, the shots he took in this fight, the left hook he got up from in the 1st. Frazier fight, laying on the ropes and letting Foreman pound on him all had to take a major effect on him later in life. It's a shame he didn't get out when he saw he was getting hit with shots he wouldn't have been hit with in his prime.
What few remember was, Earnie had been side stepped by Ali since 1976, he was at the top of his game, Ali had no business being in the ring with his old sparring partner, at that time late in his career. Only an Ali would have risked going 15 with Earnie by that time.
I watched this fight more than once: Ali Ring generalship- He danced, used the ropes and picked his moments to score. Shavers Pressed and stayed busy with power. I turned off the volume and watched. This is how I scored it. Ali (A) Shavers (S) S-A-A-S-A-S-A-S-(tie)-A-A-A-S-S-A Ali 8-6-1
First time I watched it, I scored it 7-7-1. Watching it on this footage is a bit different, because I notice a crisper sound to Ali's punches than I did before, as well as more of an audience response. That makes a difference in scoring it because a bit more of Ali's punches landed than I realized.
Yes, ...however it's not about a few more points in a title bought.Shavers would have to basically knock Ali out to win. There not just gonna take the belt away from Ali because of a few less points here and there .In a title bought you have to win beyond on that .
Wasn't a DAMN thing close about this fight. Ali pummeled this mofo, he was swinging all wild with his eyes closed, like a little kid fighting someone he knows he can't beat.
My issue is that’s it’s very common for fighters to give praise to fighters they have beaten for being the hardest puncher. Now Ali did beat Forman but I’m thinking he was drugged and I believe he hits harder than shavers. Holyfield thought all his teeth got knocked out. He says it in the corner
Earnie Shavers right hands further damaged Ali's already scrambled eggs brain. Ali was a great boxer but also foolish in that he allowed himself to get hit too many times by big punchers and fought on way too long.
That's just part of it . His last fight should have been George Foreman. When he fought Norton 3 which I scored 8-7 Norton. Notice the bad condition Ali was in at the end of the fight He looked sick and had to be helped to the locker room. It was so sad. I'm convinced his punchiness was germinating . It was truly Requiem of a Heavyweight. R.I.P.
Maaaaannnn Ali's Mind tricks are freakin Heaven sent! It was moments Shavers should've just went in like ''Fuck it'' to take Ali out....But man oh man Ali's mind tricks and reputation of being hurt and coming back is insane. Shavers did exactly what Joe frazier did in Round 11 when Ali walked back extra wobbly. They're hesitent in just going in. Shavers knows Ali is a master manipulator at playing Posum. Shavers went in every figher when they were hurt, ALL OF'EM, even Larry. But Ali.....he knew that was just a different level he still had to be on his Ps & Qs with. Landed hard SHOTS! but could never go in for the kill on Ali. Even Pasted Ali's Prime, hes a fucking Sensi Master.
Is this opinion because of the muslim name ? Or is it for what he did do in the fight ? Are you a neutral observer or a fan of Ali because he is a muslim ? Would like to know this .. I think both were good. And you ?
8-5-2 Ali. 9-7 on supplemental points.Ali was shot. He trained to actually fight 8 or 9 rounds… he won those rounds. I think he hustled Shavers by publicly harping on Ernie’s lack of stamina….he got .Ernie so focused on not running out of gas that he didn’t t do enough to actually win
So true, Shavers covered up a lot and didn't throw punches as much as usual, not confident enough that his power could knock Ali out early and more concerned about going 15 rounds, he knew Ali easily did it all the time. I understand that but it cost him in the scoring. He knew Ali had that iron jaw but i think he should have went all out on Ali early, take the risk of burning himself out in order to get a KO.
After he was retired, Ali said many times when asked in interviews that Earnie Shavers hit him harder than he was ever hit in his entire boxing career. Many boxing insiders have said they feel like it was this fight with Shavers that contributed more than any to the terrible Parkinson Disease symptons and issues that Ali would suffer from badly after his boxing career was over.
@@jegr3398 this fight effectively finished him as a legit contender. Prior to this fight he never loses to Spinks or Berbick. He went into the third fight with Frazier still a great fighter past his prime, after the Frazier fight he was just a good fighter, and after this one he was average at best.
Shavers coasted way too much through most of the fight, worried about getting tired, and knowing Ali took a great punch and might not get knocked out, so Shavers didn't pour it on until late in the fight, but too late, Ali had built up a big lead on points, by round 13 the only way Shavers could win was by KO, which he almost did, at the end of round 14 Ali was out on his feet, trainer Dundee even had to help him back to the corner, one more hard shot and Ali would've been gone, but Ali came on strong in the end, only the ropes kept Shavers from going down.
Did Ali really win this fight? Earnie had him on the backfoot most of the time. And Ali looked real tired and out of spirit. He did surmon his inner spirit though at the kast minute of the final round
absolute disappointment in this decision. if shavers was hurt one time ali was hurt at least five times. I get tired of ali's straight arm and head hooking tactics just to conserve his energy. Should've been a second fight. Shavers had more big hits on Ali than most fighters. Ali saved himself with the ropes. One more round could have went either way.
Not true at all. Dude, you watch too many duds today. Ali's style was definitely open to hook punch and that crazy overhand punch (Norton), knock down by 2 hooks however, rarely spoken yet based on Shavers, Forman and Frazier punches Ali was not a boxer who couldn't take a punch. Some hits he took would knock out most even from his period. Ali said Shavers was the hardest puncher he faced. Big strong dude. Taken 5 punches to get one is not a smart fight yet, of course he was hoping to knock the GOAT out. Ropes may prevent you from a knockdown and it's part of the game. Ernie Shavers won my respect but he started too late. If the pressure he mounted in rounds 12-14 was on for 2 or 3 more rounds, he would have KOed Ali. Ali really needed to have packed more power into his punches which often looked like mosquito punches on display. Shavers was underpaid for that duel. By the way I just noticed his striking facial resemblance with Steve Harvey, the talk show host
Only Ali could get away with rubbing Shavers head with his glove before the fight lol.. I remember watching this fight when I was a kid. Ali and Shavers liked each other there was no bitterness between the two. Earnie showed stamina that night that he normally lacked. He gave everything but just came up a few rounds short. He hurt Ali a few times and Ali later stated that was the hardest he had ever been hit.
