Why is precision investment casting the most popular process in the manufacturing industry?

  • Precision investment casting is the most popular process in the manufacturing industry for several reasons. Firstly, it allows for the production of highly complex parts with fine details and tight tolerances, making it ideal for applications in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical. Additionally, investment casting offers excellent repeatability and consistency, ensuring that parts are manufactured to the same high-quality standards every time. Furthermore, the process allows for the use of a wide range of materials, including alloys that are difficult or impossible to machine, providing greater design flexibility and material selection. Finally, investment casting is a cost-effective process, especially for small to medium-sized production runs, as it eliminates the need for expensive tooling and machining.
    Welcome to SIMIS, our precision foundry. We provide high-quality casting products and services, including: investment casting, heat treatment, surface treatment, and more. Please visit our website at investment-cas... to learn more.

    All
    That is not an investment casting. It’s a wax molded core used in an investment casting. The core will be dipped in the ceramic plaster slurry and the slurry will dry and encase the wax core. Once dry, the wax core will be leached out (melted) and then molten metal poured into the empty plaster shell. Once the metal solidifies, the plaster will be broken off and the metal casting will be deburred and cleaned. You will have the same geometry in metal that once was the wax core.

    This isn’t why they use investment casting.
    This is the phase of investment casting where they make the wax investment.
    They then after attaching sprues, pathways for molten metal, they cover this in ceramic slurry and refractory in several coats. Then bake it off, melting the wax out of it.
    Then put it in a ceramics oven and bake it to harden it and preheat it for molten metal to be poured into it. This will result in a high quality surface finish and quality part that will require much less surface finishing to have a nice and smooth finish, to be painted or coated
    That last bit was why they investment cast parts.

      "This is the phase of investment casting where they make the wax investment."
      They are using a die casting technique to create the investment.
      Fair enough..
      But they are praising investment casting technique, then out of all the other parts of the investment casting process, showing the die casting technique.. 🤔
      This seems confusing as investment patterns can be made other ways, including polystyrene cut and glued, and 3d printed patterns.
      So they're speaking of investment casting and showing us die casting😂

    Rigid Poliuretane casting, perfect for car parts manufacturing.

    • @simiscasting
      @simiscasting  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Rigid polyurethane casting is a popular method for manufacturing car parts due to its ability to produce high-quality, durable, and precise parts. Polyurethane is a versatile material that can be tailored to meet the specific needs of different car parts, such as bumpers, spoilers, and interior components.
      The polyurethane casting process involves pouring a liquid polyurethane mixture into a mold, where it is allowed to cure and harden. The resulting part can then be removed from the mold and finished to meet the required specifications.
      One of the key benefits of rigid polyurethane casting for car parts manufacturing is the ability to produce parts with complex geometries and fine details. Additionally, polyurethane is lightweight, resistant to impact and abrasion, and has good thermal and chemical resistance, making it an ideal material for car parts that need to withstand harsh conditions.
      Overall, rigid polyurethane casting is a cost-effective and efficient method for producing high-quality car parts that meet the demanding requirements of the automotive industry.

    Precision casting is preferred because it gives precision results without the precision machine work. It cuts down on time and cost of manufacturing by using an already precision made mold, instead of precision machining every single part out of a chunk of whatever material they're using

    Do you have to keep all the used dies in case you need to form another wax pattern?

    • @David-hm9ic
      @David-hm9ic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A new wax pattern has to be made for every piece that is cast so yes, you keep the mold. The wax is burned away before the metal is cast. A mold like that could cost $100,000. A mold for 20 ounce plastic cups can run $20K or more.
