It's a tale as old as time, but this tale has changed quite a bit! In honor of the live action Beauty and the Beast film, we're taking a look at some of Disney's dark (seriously dark!) secrets about the original tale of Beauty and the Beast! What did we miss? If I remember correctly, people would often marry further into their family in the past, unaware of many aspects of genetics. I believe that was especially true with royalty as they wanted to keep their blood "pure" or something. So, in that regards, it wasn't that odd that beast were to marry his cousin.
snowymitts yes, throughout history royal marriages took place between relatives. It was a "nobody's good enough for us except us" type of thing. It was also to keep rule of the kingdom in the family. You want to know what's worse than cousins marrying? In ancient Egypt pharaohs often married siblings.
Thanks for the explanation..now I understand why here in U.S.A White people marry their sisters and brothers to keep the blood line...even is not royal
Let's hear it for the voice over guy in the video too! ;) (just kidding) Honestly, I'm very proud to be voicing some videos for Channel Frederator now. I can't wait to do more.
Thank you Vicki and Kim. I know you two have been fans of my work for a long time but I want to make sure you know that Channel Fed gives me a script and I read it. I might ad-lib a little but I have nothing to do with making the video. Thank you once again for your support.
Wolle van Ro Yeah, ‘belle’ is one of the couple versions of the word ‘beauty’ or ‘beautiful’ in French. You could also say ‘beau’. So it’s a direct translation :)
Royal cousin marriages were not that uncommon especially during the time the story was written. The queen of England is married to her cousin though I'm pretty sure he is her third or fourth cousin
Cousins? So were Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. This story is set in a time period before theirs, so incest wasn't really creepy back then. I actually like this version better than the Disney one despite the "dark" stuff, but I do love the lion-dog beast from Disney ♥
No, they said, "It's no wonder that her name MEANS Beauty. Her looks have got no parallel." "But behind that fair facade, I am afraid, she's rather odd, very different from the rest of us."
Yes but it’s song weird for french people because beauty litteraly means « beauté », so it’s like if you say « la belle et la beauté » in french language. Belle songs more like name and comes from « Isabelle »
Actually, Beauty had five other siblings, not eleven Also, he didn't blame Belle! Beast sayed that he could go away, if one of his daughters took his place as a prisioner, and Beauty feels guilty for asking for the rose that unleashed this domino effect, so she offered herself
I used to watch this series on HBO Kids called "Happily Ever After". Their adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is a lot closer to the original, but nixes the whole cousins things. And, considering how fairy tales usually are, this wasn't too bad!
You forgot one thing. Beauty's sisters killed her, good fairy brings her back to life, and turn the sisters into stone columns until someone loves them...which means they're fucked forever.
In my happy modified version : He becomes duke, breaks the spell, and exiles them to Spain. Where they marry a baker and a tailor and have 3 to 5 children.
Very interesting video. Make more of them. On a side note, the voice guy in this video sounds 100% better then the voice people in other videos. The last 107 facts (more star vs the forces of evil) sounded like the girl used her webcam as a microphone. This guy sounds professional!
I'd actually like to see a Disney version of this story. Like word for word with this story but everything, except the beast, obviously, would remain how we picture them from the 90s. Also my mind went right to "Big meaty claws". Thanks spongebob and ADD!
In that time period it was actually very common to marry your cousin and it was also common to marry at the age of ten or younger, so from the authors perspective it's probably a very heart warming story.
way back when, it was common for royal families to marry their relatives to keep the "royal bloodline" or whatever, which is why a lot of royalty in the past had mental or physical problems
Sorry if this is a late answer and you probably already figured it out, I was just kinda scrolling through the comments after finding this video recently. The answer is that it's from this movie that was basically about Beauty and the Beast during the holidays, and there was a flashback scene which is where the pictures came from.
WIKI LIED TO ME! Because when I read the actual story of Beauty and the Beast it had a lot of differences to this video. Also there is a Beauty and the Beast movie that stayed true to the book version where instead of monkey butlers and parrots it was instead adorable beagles that were turned into a tarsier looking animal.
I don't get how star wars and Marvel became part of the Disney family and now they are putting James Cameron's Avatar in the park. they were not Disney to begin with and now they are? Doesn't make sense to me................. BUT I LOVE IT!!
Luna of the Darkest Night They should make a seperate park for the other franchises of keep them all in Hollywood studios. I personally am not a fan of the non disney entities being integrated into the parks. It takes away from the Disney Magic.😒
This was soooo interesting! I knew quickly the big lines of the original story, but not all these cool details! Are you going to do more "Disney Dark Secrets"?
Hi Channel Federator, you may not see this comment but I love your channel. May I request 107 facts about Lego Dimensions on Leaderboard and 107 facts about David Bowie and George Micheal on Micdrop. If you found this comment, that's for reading and once again, love your channel.
"Her name was Beauty, NOT Belle" I Mean, it's set in France where Belle literally means beauty... pretty cleaver if you ask me. And their that's line from the first song "well it's no wonder that her name means beauty" - it's not like the fact is hidden for people who might not know French or name meanings.
my grandparents owned the grim brothers fairy stories, but i don't ever recall Beauty and the beast being one of them. those facts, especially the incest part, made me shiver. but i also wish now the films had monkey butlers. also kudos to you for using the monkey image from the Aardman animated film "Science. An adventure with pirates". such a good film!
DKQuagmire Beauty and the Beast wasn't a Brothers Grimm story, so that may be why. Just like The Little Mermaid wasn't one either, since it was written by Hans Christian Anderson
When I was a child. There was a claymation version of " Beauty and The Beast ", The beast was a mix between a wolf and a lion, she had to go through a small maze everyday, and all the servants were "ghost like" or invisible. The two lead servants were animal hybrids through. The Beast did not die because of a side effect of the spell. The rose is different to, it is frozen in time, until it wilts. Then the spell is broken. They simply called instead of " Belle ", was changed to " Beauty Elizabeth ", it was from around 1989 to 1993. It was pretty good, I am disappointed it is not online through. It is sad, what his family did to him. So Beauty is a princess already. The cousin thing is not weird, if they are very distant or did not know.
There's also an Italian fairy tale very similar to beauty and the beast, except that in this version, the beast was a wizard who lived alone in a garden, and the flower was a golden carnation.
Interesting even though in the version I heard, the person who cursed him knocked on the door asking for help and he wouldn't help which was why he was cursed. But of course with many fairytales there's probably many differfent versions.
To be honest I would have liked Prince Adam to remain in Beast form, course I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted it that way. I guess I'm just thinking if it were me xD awesome facts though!
I watched the movie this weekend and something that I found very disturbing was that when Belle and beast were racing in the ball room it looked like Belle was racing with a devil. I was maybe two seconds but disturbing.
Now I myself am an artist / cartoonist and I know well to all that with "The Dark Side of Disney" Yes, many of their stories are old folk tales and stories from 17 or 1800. Some of them are from The brothers Grimm from Germany (They wrote not even the stories but, got them released) and Hans Christian Andersen from Denmark. I myself am from Denmark. :-)
In those days it was highly common for royalty to wed someone of their own family to ensure that the money and power didn't leave the family. It doesn't make it any less taboo today but it does make sense for the period the story was set in~

ChannelFrederator wow I just seen the live action Beauty and The Beast yesterday and never knew any of this...

the jungle book is pretty dark too from the source walt disney got it from

Thanks for the explanation..now I understand why here in U.S.A White people marry their sisters and brothers to keep the blood line...even is not royal
Explains why some of them are just plain ugly......a certain English prince comes to mind
Let's hear it for the voice over guy in the video too! ;) (just kidding) Honestly, I'm very proud to be voicing some videos for Channel Frederator now. I can't wait to do more.
Thanks, Frank! It was great working with you and your awesome voice. :)
Glad you here your voice on a TH-cam video again. It's a far cry from The Frank Video Show but it's cool to hear you once again.
Yea...Frank's back on TH-cam! You've got to do some 107 Facts.
Thank you Vicki and Kim. I know you two have been fans of my work for a long time but I want to make sure you know that Channel Fed gives me a script and I read it. I might ad-lib a little but I have nothing to do with making the video. Thank you once again for your support.
Frank James Bailey eww. Okay.
Her original name was Belle though. It's a french story
belle translated to English is Beauty.
Wolle van Ro Yeah, ‘belle’ is one of the couple versions of the word ‘beauty’ or ‘beautiful’ in French. You could also say ‘beau’. So it’s a direct translation :)
Its called English, duh
@@laurenquinn4716 you couldn't say beau that's masculine
Matt Bowman Oh, I’m sorry. Please forgive me, I’m in French II right now
Royal cousin marriages were not that uncommon especially during the time the story was written. The queen of England is married to her cousin though I'm pretty sure he is her third or fourth cousin
SkyBlue I thought to myself SPOILER ALERT
When did Beauty and the Beast turn into Riverdale?

Belle mean beauty in French, so in the original her name would have been "Belle"
Cousins? So were Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. This story is set in a time period before theirs, so incest wasn't really creepy back then. I actually like this version better than the Disney one despite the "dark" stuff, but I do love the lion-dog beast from Disney ♥
Okay, I'm confused. Doesn't Belle mean beauty in French?
aiken relkins yes, it's also just a better name than an English adjective lol.
I know, but I'm just confused because its a French tale and they just said her name wasn't Beauty when techically, in French, it was.
A Belle better equivalent in English is Pretty, not Beauty but this last one sounds a lot better for a title film though.
I wonder what Tim Burton's take on this would be like?
Actually, Beauty had five other siblings, not eleven
Also, he didn't blame Belle! Beast sayed that he could go away, if one of his daughters took his place as a prisioner, and Beauty feels guilty for asking for the rose that unleashed this domino effect, so she offered herself
Wasn't marrying your cousins a common thing among the nobility, back in the day?
Back in the day? It still is... The English Royals are all blood, lol. That's not a joke. Even Kate is a cousin.
pretty common in the middle east too
They marry among brothers and sisters here in U.S.A to this day...nothing new
Worse. Royals in Europe actually wed their own siblings in order to keep their status as Royals!
@@parkinglotstriping9800 i’m 63 and I’ve never met anyone who’s married a sibling.
you should do more of these
Thanks! If this one does well, we just might. Share it with some friends!
This needs to be a movie. This is a trip!
I used to watch this series on HBO Kids called "Happily Ever After". Their adaptation of Beauty and the Beast is a lot closer to the original, but nixes the whole cousins things. And, considering how fairy tales usually are, this wasn't too bad!

I've literally never seen Beauty and the Beast... How dare you not do spoiler alert lol
Charlie Dawn what did you expect??
dumbass
Rachel O It was literally a joke, dont get butt hurt 😂
I haven't either actually.
You have a nice pair of knockers, sir.

Hi JPonyLoco.
Howdy, loved the video, how you guys manage to make quality videos on a regular basis, blows my mind
no gaston ??!!!! wow the original version must've been sooooo boring
lru I just really love to hate gaston so I was kind of disappointed to know that he was not in the original version :(
NO. THIS STORY HAS MORE LIFE.
Actually, Gaston plays the same role as Beauty's siblings
Except for the mob part and stuff
Jennifer's Life Do you have a link for it?
Daughter Of Hades JEEZ LUIS! This story is WAY better than the cartoon as The original rupunzel story is to tangled

Ignoring the disturbing aspects for a moment, the original story, to me, seems needlessly complicated.
What can you expect from a woman writing fanfiction? :D
iRinnda that’s not the reason. Actually French children stories are weird. A good example of it is the little red riding hood.
Seriously....very staircase leads to nowhere-ish.
This story ruined my life. I never liked it, even as a kid.
I'd actually like to see a Disney version of this story. Like word for word with this story but everything, except the beast, obviously, would remain how we picture them from the 90s.

The live action one had beast take in belles father not because of entering his castle, but for stealing a rose.
The version I read did not have monkey butlers, but invisible servants and...strange magical windows that display amusing shows for her.
Hi guys! I love ur vids!

Haha, cousins being married was normal at that time, which is why i'm totally not freaked out. It was a social norm then.
my grandparents owned the grim brothers fairy stories, but i don't ever recall Beauty and the beast being one of them.

I'VE ACTUALLY SEEN THIS STORY IN A ROLPLAY WHEN I CAME TO THE SCHOOL CINEMAS. I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
To be fair, royals of old _did_ often try to keep it in the family.
Obviously that doesn't make it a good thing, it's just...a thing.

No one annoys channel federator like Gaston
I love that the live action verison made the beast take belle father after he took a rose luke the orginal tale :D
This is mind blowing!
Hello This Is An Wonderful Video
Dark secrets about The Hunchback of Notre Dame!!!
As dark as the tones are in the Disney movie, the original story by Victor Hugo is soooo much worse.
the everblooming garden is quite nice, actually
Interesting even though in the version I heard, the person who cursed him knocked on the door asking for help and he wouldn't help which was why he was cursed. But of course with many fairytales there's probably many differfent versions.
Beast's daddy was a velociraptor.
if all this is true I don't want to hear another person talk about disney changes in movies being "for babies" anymore.
Please tell me you are gonna do more of these!
Beauty and Beast are COUSINS? Family secrets? This is like the Dollanganger series!
this video is really interesting!
Great video, captivated me start to finish.
This was really good
Please make dark secrets an ongoing series!
Disney didn't invent the living, moving objects in the castle. The French did. See the old black and white moving Belle et la Bete
I-I'm sorry, but I can't look back on Beauty and the Beast anymore without seeing them as counsins. Dammit.
Liked before watching
I had this book!! Only mine had Beast a more hairy Boar type look.

I watched the movie this weekend and something that I found very disturbing was that when Belle and beast were racing in the ball room it looked like Belle was racing with a devil. I was maybe two seconds but disturbing.
I'm still freaked out about the cousins thing
At least in the original beauty got her adventure in the great wide somewhere
CHILDHOOD WHERE ARE YOU?
Childhood: I'm dead.
Me: ..oh, ok.
Well it was very common for royal families to marry within the family to keep the royal blood goin
You should make one of these on Cinderella
so what im hearing is the hello kitty version i watched god knows how many years ago was more correct then the Disney version.
Do Lion King (from 1-3) and also Little Mermaid if you haven't.. I know those have dark secrets too hehe
5:32 The beast is reptillian, and has a mixed-matched animal look, like Discord? How is that off-putting?! I'd go for him!
Her name was Belle in the original book, but in French Belle means Beauty.
Belle, with an "E" at the end is the french word for beauty as use in the story in its original language, the proper title is "la belle et la Bête"
Honestly, I hope they do Sleeping Beauty and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame soon!
I would like a movie version of this b&b
Cut out the cousins aspect to it and this could make a great movie aimed at moderately older audiences.
Belle means "beauty" in french. But yeah. her "actual" name, of course...
This actually wasn't all that dark. It was pretty nice c;
Oooooh my goooodnesssss this story is so involved!!!!!!
Now I myself am an artist / cartoonist and I know well to all that with "The Dark Side of Disney" Yes, many of their stories are old folk tales and stories from 17 or 1800. would love to see dark secure for the other disney movies
I thought that in the original Beast never turns back and eventually eats Beauty
