      This probably depends on country/age. When I was in hs I didn't really need to hide it, altho I'm not sure exactly how people would know unless they had phone or you wore merch to school (mine had uniforms)

      @@ChronicalV True. During my HS days, I think a lot of us at school are into anime and general pop-culture. Idk. It's really weird. Afaik. No one really hides liking anime. In fact, we're proud of liking one. We decorate our bags with merch as well, (pins/badges, mostly) and no one got bullied from liking anime, too from what I've observed, and that was in the early 2000s. lol.

      @@HeathenHacks wow thats pretty rare. I left hs only a few years ago, and no one was that bold. It was more a we kept to ourselves, and others wouldn't bother us kinda thing. I'm surprised no one made fun of you for having it on your bags as you walked around lol

    Different connotations. When they say BL or yaoi, the assumed demographic is usually women. That's why you get usually more feminine looking men because women look for those aesthetics. Bara, on the other hand, is BL targeted for men. Which is why you usually muscular men on bara comics

    • @AkitaMix
      @AkitaMix ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've read this somewhere before but the term yaoi is something that was first used by westerners to denote BL, not the Japanese.

      wasnt GL and yuri is also kinda different, like GL's story more lean on to romantic scene while yuri story is more into scissor scene. cmiw

      That's just the english speaking world interpretation of the Japanese terms, not how Japanese actually use them.

      @@Izuizuku yuri was always non-sexual I believe. Both the term yuri and bara originated from the same magazine barazoku aka they were both meant to be for their respective queer communities and then it was later sexualised (this is done with bare minimum research so I am def wrong in some aspects and all of the sources were western in origin talking about Japan in English). I think the reason BL is separated from Yaoi could also be the inherent sexualisation that happened with women reading yaoi and then BL rose up to be the non-sexual version? This last past is pure speculation and has no facts backing it on my part

      These idol, seisou, oshi things, all these stuffs boiled down from those real-life idols. Back in the days idols are expected to act diligent and gracefully as a role model for young females, especially children. But nowadays if you watch those big idol groups in national television most of them do not shy away or hide their hobbies and fantasies in public, a lot of them even fangirl about voice actors, anime characters, and what not. Also a lot of teenager nowadays are more open about it. You can go around asking people and even students who's their favourite national idol, what anime, game, music genre and they will give you a straight answer. Just like how Japan as a country is being more projective to the outside world, global if one would say.
      By today's standard the border between seisou and rotten is very blurred. Since if you categorized them all (VTubers) by original idol seisou standards they would all fail, especially when it comes to vernacular (egui, kuso, shine, gaki et cetera) and also through action like the infamous daipan.

    TLDR: It is a 昭和 (Shouwa (Era)) kind of thing, like your boomer - gen x thing in the west.
    Well, it was originally serialised as 少年愛 (Shounen Ai literally means Adolescence Male Love / Boy Love) as a 少女漫画 (Shoujo Manga lit Adolescence Female Manga) sub-genre back in the 70s. Therefore, the characters always lack the typical masculine features like facial hair, muscles, et cetera (the typical chad looking guy); unlike in 薔薇 (Bara lit Rose) since it is more pointed towards male audience.
    Yaoi was first used to categorised Shounen Ai Doujinshi that almost had zero plots and is more focused into sex. The term also got stuck with the non-Japanese when they imported those Doujinshi hence why gay hentai are labelled as such outside Japan (blame the hentai it's what caused the spread). This was mostly used way back in the 70 - 80s.
    And then in the 90s Japanese publishers officially adopted BL for official published works relating to Shounen Ai, hence why the current generation of Japanese audience are more familiar with it.
    Shouwa = Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen X and Early Millennials (1926 - 1989)
    Heisei = Late Millennials, Gen Z, Gen Alpha (1989 - 2019)
    Reiwa = Gen Alpha to present (2019 - …)
