I am living in the U.S. and am 53 yrs old. I had a pen pal here, in Taunton, Somerset back in the 80's! I wish I could find her now! We wrote for about 6-7 years, and shared favorite music, bands, foods, cultural events, etc with each other over the years! It would take a couple of weeks to get our letters, postmarked, to each other overseas. I even asked her to send me candy bar wrappers and magazine and news clippings from here! It was so exciting and I always enjoyed learning about this area and the U.K. all over! WAY before the internet and so much modernized progress!
Taunton is the town where I was born. A lot of my youth was spent in Taunton and I have enjoyed some of my best times in this town. It is one of the places that I feel most at home and some of my favourite friends still live there. I love Taunton.
Stayed in Taunton for 6 months in 2018 for my volunteer work. DEFINITELY HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART ❤ I always come back to this video whenever I miss this place 💕
Love this! I live in the USA, but my gg grandfather was born in Taunton in the 1840s. After his father died, his mother sent him and his brothers to live with their sister in Ohio, USA when he was only 10. His final residence was Pittsburg, Kansas, USA, which is 35 miles from where I was born and still live. My gg grandfather never returned to England, and never saw his mother again. I can only assume his parents are buried somewhere in Taunton. I hope to find out someday. History is precious! Anyway, thank you for the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Yes! Some 35 years ago, my son and I visited Taunton, from which my ancestor emigrated to New Haven, Connecticut, in 1644. He had been wounded in the civil war, and soon after he left, Taunton came under siege by the Royalists. His father was Curate of the St. Mary Magdalene Church. A lovely town now, but a tough history. Thank you for screening.
I was born and raised in Taunton until the age of 14. How it has changed (not all for the better) over the past 40 odd years! Enjoyed the video, thanks.
Thank you for this beautiful walk down memory lane, I grew up in Taunton, it has changed a lot, used to go to school swimming lessons on James Street, now apartments it seems, I lhave lived in Western Australia for 25 years niw,, Iused to work for Gribble Booth and Taylor, then Wilkie May and Tuckwood,, have a new home, but Taunton is where I am from and my family is still there. Thanks heaps made my night ❤❤
I mean it looks idilic but you can't judge a book by its cover. Taunton is a nice place, I've been living here now for close to 15 years, but like every town I guess, it has its problems. Many shops have been hit by the pandemic, and Taunton suffers from a good deal of homelessness. Most of the homeless are not from Taunton, but seem to gravitate to it due to there being a homeless hostel in the town. There are some areas of the town that might not have made for a good video. All that said, it's a fairly peaceful, laid back town with generally nice people.
Greetings from Taunton, Massachusetts, USA. I enjoyed your town walk, and would love to host one here, when you have the chance. May I visit your city soon? I would really enjoy it. Carry on, folks!
I enjoyed this video even though I live in Taunton myself lol and my home town is Swaffham in Norfolk, there is so much history in that town it’s unbelievable
I see that so many things has changed in 10 years. I have stayed there for 3 weeks and it was my first experience on abroad so Taunton is very special for me. Thanks for sharing.
I went to school in Taunton but haven't been back in 40 years. I remember Debenhams and the bridge, also St Mary's where we used to go for Christmas service. There was a rather posh County Hotel and W H Smith near Debenhams I think. We were only allowed into town one afternoon a week and the furthest I ventured is probably the end of North Street. There used to be a County Bookshop somewhere near there. Pity I never knew about Vivary Park, the Cricket Club or the other places people mentioned. It's sad to read about the problems it has now.
Great video love visiting Taunton used to visit the town loads before COVID-19. Vivary park is one of the most beautiful places in the south west of England. Love the video keep up the good stuff.
Loved this video...your soundtrack uplifts...I've "Shazamed" a few...lol! I even sing them while watching now...a wee dance follows!!! Course I've had two beers as well...:) Thanks!
Hi, great video, however you missed some of the most historic and beautiful areas in the centre. If you do another walk, be sure to walk through bath place, visit the cider press, which is flanked by beautiful buildings, the municipal buildings and the castle which is in the centre of the town, not forgetting Mary Magdalene church right in the heart of the town ☺️ keep up the great work 👍

Another enjoyable walk in a town I know well thanks. Have you visited Portsmouth yet? I think a walk starting in Old Portsmouth walking to the retail and leisure centre at Gunwharf Quays and then on along Queens Street passing the shore base HMS Nelson and the RC cathedral and then onwards to the City Centre culminating in Guildhall Square would make for an interesting walk.
@@GimbalWalkTV The shopping area in the city centre is not much to write home about but Gunwharf Quays which includes the Spinnaker Tower is a relatively new development well worth visiting.
So happy to see this. So many memories in this strange little town. It really hasn´t changed much since I was marauding around it getting drunk and kissing boys some 40 years ago.
Disappointed not to see some of the iconic buildings of my home town - no castle, no Elizabethan building where Judge Jeffreys held the "Bloody Assizes" in 1685. And you were so close to both of them.
