This moment and this arc made Kerry one of the best characters in my opinion. I thought it was clear that Johnny only picked up on part of his motivations for going solo - being only for the fame and money, and not seeing himself as casting the shadow Kerry was trying to get out of. Kerry also couldn't really forget his time at Samurai and the subsequent years, and it hung over him for so long that he couldn't let go of the idea that he'd sold his soul - ultimately crippling his creativity. For me, this was Kerry letting go of his torment and meeting himself again - finding his music and entering the new loop. And that Johnny was there to see it after learning his actual motivations and just listening to this song... felt like he was saying "I finally get you". It's like seeing two brothers who spent years not talking finally understanding each other.

So I think he does actually know the real reason why Kerry left, not just for money and all that.

  • @aweshetdima2157
    @aweshetdima2157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think I know what happened in the development of the game.
The devs went straight into nailing the look and feel of the city as if you are truly walking its streets and taking in the sights in each area.
One example is Watson. It is like a mix of industrial utilities like cargo ship docks in Arasaka Waterfront and the many warehouse-esque buildings that surround it. You just happen to live just on the edge of those utilities in those seemingly impromptu Megabuildings made to house and fill the needs for as many workers or potential workers possible for the corps.
And then, you got the characters and their quests. Sure, it seems surface level at first. Panam is a Nomad, Judy is a Streetkid, Jackie is the Live or Die type, etc. It's only then when you dive into their character arcs do you see that it's more complicated than that.
Jackie seeks to be remembered, but he isn't gonna sacrifice his friends to do so.
Panam may be a nomad, but she doesn't see the point of running and fleeing one place when the situation there sours.
Judy knows that life is horrible in Night City, but she still tries to make it bearable for others while she's there through braindances.
Even V, who comes off as an asshole, has a reason to be as they're dealt an incredibly bad hand and is dying of a disease with seemingly no cure in sight. Of course they are. They're just lashing out because of it.
The devs even made the corpos a bit relatable. Takemura mentions that even if the corpos are evil to everyone else, they still give jobs to those that need it and those that earn it. Those jobs in turn feed families and sustain people in times of need. Every corpo you see aren't a reflection of the worst type of rich person that only wants to get more money. They're just people doing their jobs.
Even Arasaka, the most "Evil" corporation of Cyberpunk 2077, has heavily funded japanese districts like Kabuki and Little Japan to give back to the Japanese Communities around the world.
Have you ever hear Militech do the same? Probably.
The truth with Night City is is that it's always gray. You could say that the Corpos are the ones to blame here, but I raise you the counter that maybe the people they serve wanted this, albeit indirectly. The Landfill mountain, for example, is NEVER in anyone's thoughts. No one in Night City cares that the landfill can be easily mistaken for a mountain from far away. Thus, the corpos never do anything about it. Why do something good when no one cares that it is good?
    TL;DR
The devs nailed the feeling and the look of the bleak future that is Cyberpunk 2077, which may have taken the bulk of the development time and left close to no time for its gameplay.

I really hope they explore Kerry more in the upcoming DLC. I'd LOVE to spend more time with the guy, I think he really filled that hole Jackie left in V's heart. It was just a quiet ride on a boat, making V (me) think about all the crazy shit we've done together, all our mistakes, finding Panam, knowing we'll die soon, and the future of if we live. Panam may have reignited my enjoyment of the story, but Kerry. Kerry was the one who set that small flame ablaze with this small intimate moment. Thing is, there is no potential in the guy. He is old, he is established. Where do you go from being a rockstar? What kind of journey would a man of about 80 start that is big enough for a new story? Panam, Judy or River are better bets, that is, if the writers want to continue with one of the old gang. All three of them are in a situation where they need to find into a new role in life, with Judy probably lacking the depth and character traits to carry a narrative.

The contrast between the intimacy of V's interactions with all these people found in their struggle to survive, contrasted by that imminent danger and the pervasive sensory-overload and hyper-sexualization that fills Night City just highlights the beauty of moments like this.
No other game has such an emotionally compelling and artistically engaging storyline. Some games might give you more choice and influence like Fallout: New Vegas, some might have more hours worth of shit to do like Skyrim, some might have an open world filled with a bunch of menial and pointless side-activities like GTA V, but no game that I've experienced demonstrates such mastery in story writing or character writing and acting. *SPOILERS AHEAD**SPOILERS AHEAD**SPOILERS AHEAD**SPOILERS AHEAD* Such a shame it's always you or Johnny. You can't be both alive. I finished the game today for the first time, did all the endings, took me 8 hours. It made me so sad when I saw Johnny totally changed after taking over V's body (Temperance ending). He was mature. And how Panam promised him death thereafter, but it was V's choice to leave the body, cause he had 6 months left only. And Johnny was even stopping V, telling him to go back to his life. This really broke me, he wasn't a "rockerboy" anymore and he was ready to die just to give you these 6 months of life. I cried like a little kid, and I'm not ashamed of it. I think it's selfish to erase Johnny and stay alive for 6 months only while he could live whole life again. It kills me to think he could get that second chance and tried to be better person, tried to fix something and we just deprived everything. Therefore I think it's the best choice. On the other hand... Leaving Night City with Panam, being together, and looking for a cure is promising too. Super hard to believe they can find any help, even Arasaka's best scientists weren't able to save V in the Moon base, or Alt Cunningham, or anyone in NC. This story just has to end up bad, and that's why it's so beautiful and unforgettable. A story about a thief who wanted to become a legend of the Night City, and on the end he just wanted to live, he was ready to do everything to survive. And he was deprived of it, no matter what choices he made. I feel so sorry for Alt and for Rogue, how the thing with Johnny turned out for them. And Johnny couldn't fix anything really at the end. I don't want to play any game after Cyberpunk. Never more. I'd like this to be my last memory of gaming. I spent way too many hours playing. Wonderful hours, wonderful stories, and wonderful characters. I feel really sorry for people who say gaming is a waste of time. I played my whole life. Sorry for this long ass essay. I just wanted to tell what I think, the game left me with so many thoughts, and I don't even have anyone to talk about it. :(

    • @agentundercover
      @agentundercover 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Man, my favourite ending is the temperance ending too, it's the "happiest" ending in my book, because here at least Johnny gets to live on, and he seems to be a changed man too. Didn't stop me from crying though, especially seeing how much of an impact V really had on Johnny. I hate but love all the endings so much, they're all bittersweet, it's just up to personal preference which poison you're willing to take. I'm sad my journey is over, the game really made me think about a lot of things... Very few games do that these days, and I'm so grateful for my journey.

I too think that this is one of the most beautiful game experiences that are existing. The Temperance choise seems also as the Best choice, because for the whole story you living you life by making things mainly to yourself and sometimes for others, but this choice is the ultimate sacrufice you can mąkę - give somebody a life. Thats right, i never saw this as only giving the body, its giving a new life, new perspective. Thats funny how for a long time Johny is you teachers, as V said, he helped him break barriers in his life. But at the end, you teach Johny how to just have a meaningful life, i mean, at the end of the story Johny becomes a mature individual, as he said to the kid in the ending "rebelion must grown up". He is you friend and can make the most meaningful thing - give him life. And as Johny said, he will try to use it in the Best way possible. I've never excepted Such ending... A thing of beauty.

I'm just gonna call this song - Life's Loops. Because of what Kerry talks about in this scene. My 100+ hour journey on my PS4 has been absolutely amazing. I didn't have a thing to complain about, unlike some of those entitled and impatient criers. Thank you CDPR for this amazing story with all of this amazing music and overall talent. Kudos and love

Cyberpunk is such a harsh world filled with some of the softest moments that it sometimes makes you forget how terrible everything that has happened to you was. I really love this game and this song perfectly captures that cathartic melancholy of going through this world over and over looking for the best way to end our story

Moments like this was where the game really came into its own. The dive with Judy, the sandstorm with panam, the water tower with river. It’s a shame we didn’t get more side quests that delivered these great character moments. Perhaps we still will in the dlc.

I just finished this game for the first time.
And I don't really know what to say. This moment, this song...
The artist who created this must be given a fucking price.
I don't know how to explain it, but when I listened to the song I cried like a little bitch. I felt pain and left all alone with nothing but these tunes.
It is hard to explain and may sound dumb, but at that very moment I did not know who was crying. Was it V or was it me? Did I feel my own pain or that of a damn video game Character?
    ...
Damn good game, that's for sure!

There are a few conversations you have in the game as a passenger, where once the talking is done you can skip straight to the destination.
This was one that I just sat along for the whole way, just because of this song. It's a great piece of music.

I loved this moment. Johnny just chilling on the edge of the boat felt weirdly freeing and yet heartbreaking at the same time. Dude missed out on so much of his friends life and yet he gets to spend some more time with them through V. I'm so glad they made it so Kerry knows Johnny's still there

Glitches and Bugs are just a temporary thing on certain systems.
But the masterpiece as whole will prevail and shine even brighter in the future.
Dont listen to the hate-train that is rolling just for the sake of hating the game.
You can just sit on a boat and listen this jam and all bad and hateful voices will be gone.
    Just enjoy.

To sit down, to take these few minutes to genuinely do nothing, to watch the ocean and falling sun after everything the game has thrown at you, is a very special moment, games don't need to be perfect, nor do they need to impress me or try to, sometimes a moment like this is all that's needed, it's more a symbol of a journey, a journey I won't ever forget, my hatred of Johnny that blossomed into love, the friends made in night city, the way I chose to live as I grew from a weak nobody who hid in the shadows to a reckless warrior who'd trust an ai in my head after living together for more than a month or 2, seeing his life, and mine, this song by Kerry had power, the power to give a little introspection, no matter whether this game amazed you or dissatisfied you, this is an experience and will stick with people for a long time if they allow it too, this is what a simple song and soft moment can elicit (mini thesis over)
