I've liked this song since it first came out. Wonderful shifting time signatures. One of the greatest voices in rock and roll history.

Just a story from the day. When Elvis was asked how it felt to be the best singer, he replied "I don't know ask Roy".

Yes Roy had his own legendary lane. The best Roy Impersonator, was a man from New Hampshire named Roy Small.❤sadly he passed a few yrs ago, but had a long and an amazing story of the last few years of his life.❤😢 I love both❤Orbison definitely had vocals that give you goosebumps, takes you places, sooths your soul, eargasms😂❤. Legendary ❤

WOW i was able to listen to Roy as his music was released in the 60's so i know it well, but all i could do as i listened was say jeez,,,,what a voice. Next from him should be Blue Bayou, then do your self a favor and follow it with Linda Ronstadt's cover one of the finest female voices ever

Roy was known as the king of "The Ballad." Probably because his own life had so much tragedy, he sang with what his own heart had experienced. What a voice.
    Thanks

There's a great Bruce Springsteen quote: “When I went into the studio to record ‘Born To Run,’ I wanted to make a record with words like Bob Dylan, that sounded like Phil Spector’s productions, but most of all I wanted to sing like Roy Orbison. Now, everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison.” Everybody loved Roy.

Again, I cannot recommend the concert movie "Black and White Night" enough. It features Roy Orbison later in his career, with an All-Star backing band doing all his major hit songs, including "Only The Lonely". Don't want to give it all away, but the BAND is Amazing!!!

In short, you really had to know your "sh*t." Actually read music with little or no rehearsal [there were a few exceptions depending on the project]...studio time cost money. Computers have put thousands of musician past, present , and future, out of work.

@@netzahuacoyotl We used to joke that Roy's guitar wasn't grounded and whenever he got a shock he would sing in his high range...but the joke was truly it was out of respect for his vocal ability.

Roy had his fine voice until his end. His vocal and emotion were with his talent. He died in 1988, I recall.
The Traveling Wilbury’s, being in the first group of the Rock Hall, and completing an album before he died (help from Harrison, Petty, U2, Jeff L’, etc) I am sure when he died, he knew he was respected in the musical realm. (He had a few tragedy’s in his family) watch the concert “B&w Night” with several music talents playing in his band, in his last year. Roy O’ was admired.

Roy was really special! A few songs that Roy has done that I think are great are: "Dream Baby," "In Dreams," "Blue Bayou," and one that I don't think many people know is Roy's cover of Stephen Foster's song "Beautiful Dreamer." I don't think there's a bad Roy Orbison song! Also, hope to see a John Denver reaction soon!

Hi Shawn.. When Roy sings you believe every word that this kind humble gentle soul of a man expresses. He sang for the lonely, the broken hearted, the forgotten. Many of his songs are about breaking-up, the loss of a loved one, and of tragic love. He is able to express oll this emotion in his voice that hits your soul full on and you feel it. When you tie in the tragic loss and suffering of his personal life with the loss of his first wife (Claudette in a motorcycle accident-Roy was driving behind her when she died and the death of his first 2 sons in a house fire that was supposedly fire-proof. (Roy was away at the time on tour in the UK) you feel the pain and suffering magnified for real in his pure falsetto voice on the high notes. People said that Roy Orbison had grown men crying in the front of the audience such was the emotion that he could make you feel..a desolate Texan drawl of pure emotion). Jeff Lynne said that when he was recording parts of Roy singing in the Travelling Wilbury's the needle was right off the scale such was the power of his voice. Many music enthusiasts said that they were staggered at how Roy generated such powerful emotion by hardly opening his mouth and standing so still. Keep going Shawn with "The Big O" my personal favourite is "Crawling Back" a beautiful sad break-up of love and the want of getting back to your girl

Roy was an immense talent, one of a kind. No one sang about heartache like Lonesome Roy. He wasn't blind. He started wearing sunglasses because of the bright lights onstage and it became his trademark look. True story: When Elvis was just starting out, you could book him to play a concert for $100 a night. A concert promoter in Texas - I wish I knew his name - booked Elvis to play five shows in five different Texas cities in one week. At two different shows that week, two young Texas boys saw Elvis and decided to start making music themselves. Their names were Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. We owe that promoter so much.

If you want to see an even more intense example of him defying traditional song structure for the time, it never really repeats it just builds and builds, and is massive hit, In Dreams, disturbingly and infamously featured in David Lynch's breakout movie Blue Velvet wirh Dean Stockwell from Quantum Leap lip-syncing to it in a dangerous party environment commandeered by the evil Frank, played by Dennis Hopper. It's just brilliant.
It's Over is another really short one by Roy but it shows his range and it does have a repeat structure but it's really sparse and it transforms each time so much. And it builds and builds in such a short amount of time and to me that's one of his greatest vocal performances.

The guitar riff from that, iconic as it is, was an obvious borrowing of the Beatles and other Liverpool Bands style of early songs at the time, in late 1964. Which was a smart move to appeal to the newer listening audience...Roy just turned those kinds of riffs into something different, yet similar in method. The album songs Hold Me Tight by the Beatles had a very similar riff in style, and in the middle of I Call Your Name. Another similar riff is the Swinging Blue Jeans' song "The Hippy Hippy Shake" [ which the Beatles covered in their act before they came to the USA etc Similar in style, not note for note...

I definitely agree with bobschenkel7921 that you should react to Roy Orbison the "Black and White" special. OMG! Iconic musicians backing him up (Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt,...cannot name them all). Star studded audience (Sandra Bernhardt, Billy Idol, Kris Kristofferson, and more). Live vocals that (in my opinion) are even better than his original recordings.

Yes its true, Elvis thought that Roy Orbison and Fats Domino were better singers than he.

  • @thomastimlin1724
    @thomastimlin1724 ปีที่แล้ว

Generally in the singing business, with those who make it and are consistent, nobody is "better" than anybody...just different. Elvis may have had a deeper more powerful voice and more sex appeal, but Roy Orbison often wrote his own songs [Elvis generally did not[ and had a different kind of operatic sounding voice [although natural, not trained, same as Elvis]. In fact Elvis stated that so unique was Roy's voice that he (Elvis) never attempted to record or sing any of Roy's songs because he couldn't match Roy's style. I get tired of people's Simple minded habit comparing apples to oranges, as if music were a damned contest rather than an art, even in pop music. You never hear much from people about Beethoven being better than Mozart, Gershwin being better than Duke Ellington etc. because many have no clue who they were [another sad chapter in education in America]. Music is an art, not a shit show with scores to keep like sports. Elvis had tremendous respect for Roy and admired his singing...if that's not an endorsement by the "King" [as if Roy needed one lol] I don't know what is. Roy got to where he was WITHOUT Elvis' endorsement though. Roy had 2 #1 hits, 10 top 10 hits and 30 songs on the charts. when Elvis was begin forced to do movies, and the Beatles dominated the charts with Motown and others putting on pressure as well, Roy came up with a #1 he wrote himself...when they all thought he was washed up..."Pretty Woman." Later in life he was asked to be in the "Traveling Wilburys" by George Harrison, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan...and that was NOT a Pity Party! He could have said no. But he joined and restarted his career with a TV special and a new album." The poor man died too young just after that at age 52 and his last single "You Got It" was released 1 month after and reached the Top Ten.
