わたしが大学生時代の夜中に偶然テレビを見ていたら、スバルがWRC３連覇した特別番組が放送されていて、そこでインプレッサのかっこよさに度胆抜かれたのは今でも鮮明に覚えています。なつかしい。（When I watched TV in the middle of the night (when I was a college student), I still vividly remember that Subaru was very strong and won the WRC for the third time in a row. I was overwhelmed by the coolness of the Impreza. ）

I think the Impreza WRC 1997-2000 is the best looking rally car ever. Love how it handles sounds as well...whistling and growling.

Golden era of rallying, when cars looked and sounded cool. I have driven 4 Subarus and owned 3. Same chassis and production engines as these cars. Will drive them until the day I die!

Actually the ones you owned were the straight up 2L boxer engines. The rally version is a little wider, could not fit into the normal production line & the engine was a 2.2L 22B. So a little different. But the Rally version had a 0-100 of 3.5 vs. the 5.9 ish of the production ones. That....... THING!!!! could beat a ferrari F40 on a twisty road.

The WRCars were all 2.0L. The 22B and rally car were not the same thing, the 22B was a road car designed to look like the WRCar, but the 22B was not the competition car.
No wonder why Bunta choose this Subaru to be his AE86 replacement.

because suichi shigeno is a WRC fan. if you repeatly read the manga you will notice about what exactly initialD is all about. not a wasting tires drifting shit, but actually a rally skills and technique (meanwhile keisuke skills adapting of hillclimb). shinego-senpai actually wrote a lot of explanation in the manga about rally and fujiwara skills related. dakara if you read his new mfghost manga (initialD sequel), takumi actually end up being a rally driver. but retired after he crashed due to driveshaft problem

CJAE Y I really hope they decide to go back. They just obliterate the opposition in Rally America year after year. Subaru has also been setting profit records month after month for like the past 3-4 years or something, so they should be well financially now to support a WRC team which supposedly was reason for leaving in 08 if I'm not mistaken. They are involved in different motor sports like the 24hrs Nurburgring and GT in Japan. But I think it's been long enough, FHI is strong enough to support a WRC and get back to the roots that made Subaru many of its fans.

Agree. When I look at it, it just doesn't have the trademark Subaru look. Also, I test drove one and it felt completely different, even from the 2013. It saddens me.

he was one of my favourites but I would have to give the best title to Juha kankunen, there is more to making the best rally driver than just being fast and spectacular (maybe the best over a single stage but not the entire season, not without good fortune), like mcrae and vatanen were.
+The ANT after macrae's retirement, wrc isn't the same sport. And probably will be not the same. That says everything. You are right, he wasn't the most successful and constant (I believe this 'title' belongs to makkinen , not kankunen or Loeb, for differents reasons) but the feeling of being in front of macrae driving was the most magic ever in wrc. On my eyes he is the best...

By far best looking subaru love this car one of the most iconic cars of rallying and we can thank Collin Mcrae for that i fell in love with this type of subaru and rallying because of him... "If in doubt flat out" rallying isn't the same without this car and him.

the reason why the wrc is a disgrace to its former self:
wrc spec cars. there is no longer a direct relationship to a road going equivalent. so people don't feel like they are watching their car, next car or dad's car so people aren't interested.
racing improves the breed, and they are no longer being raced (not since 1999 evo 6).
I can't think of a single car of this type that has left a truly lasting legacy since the fall of group a (I can think of dozens since before homologation was abolished, mk1/2 escorts, sunbeams, mantas, Quattros, integrales, Sierra/escort cosworth, imprezas, evos, etc. and that's just some of the rally cars alone, not to mention touring cars.

1. Watch a car just like theirs win the wrc.
2. Watch something extremely spectacular like group b was. (Very fast cars on the verge of constantly loosing control isn't allowed any more)
Wrc spec cars are too controllable, too good to be spectacular.
Group a cars were just like their road going counterparts and shared a lot of components. Making them a compromise so they become a spectical at a lower speed.
Wrc spec cars bare no relation to cars in showrooms so they aren't satisfying to watch either, so win on Sunday sell on Monday is not relevant so manufacturers don't want the hassle. So less competition, less publicity, less tv coverage, less sponsorship, less interest/ less enthusiasm, etc.
Wrc was a big popular sport 20 years ago but now only people who are already petrol heads care at all
I used to be obsessed but now i watch the monte each year to see if it's worth watching and its rare that i watch the wrc now. But I'm still obsessed with rallying, i watch the lower level stuff and historics where there is a road going equivalent.
The world rally championship peaked in the eighties through to late nineties.
