- In this video, we will be comparing the sound of three different violins, all of which are Guarneri models. Guarneri violins are some of the most highly sought-after instruments by musicians and collectors alike, known for their rich, warm sound and exceptional craftsmanship.
We will start by introducing each of the three violins, providing some background on their unique characteristics that set them apart from one another. We will also discuss the various factors that can impact the sound of a violin, including the type of wood used, the age of the instrument, and the playing style of the musician.
Once we have covered these introductory topics, we will move on to the main event: a side-by-side comparison of the three violins. Each violin will be played by Ariel Lang, founder of MyLuthier and professional violinist, allowing us to hear the unique tonal qualities and nuances of each instrument.
Throughout the video, we will provide commentary and analysis on the sound of each violin, discussing what we are hearing and what makes each instrument stand out. By the end of the video, we hope you will have a better understanding of the subtle but important differences in sound that can be found among Guarneri violins, and a new appreciation for the beauty and complexity of these incredible instruments.

Did you know that I have worked with Gregg Alf & Joe Curtin in 1990 when they had their workshop together in Ann Arbor?
And Alessandro di Matteo when he arrived to Cremona (he is from Russia of I remember correctly) worked for me during his studies…..

1, 3 then 2 bringing up the rear I think. Violin 2 sounds more muted and harder to play. Violin 3 would be PERFECT for 4tet playing, and the Sibelius would be a joy on violin 1.

Your playing was great! And, any of those violins would be excellent, especially for solo instruments. I judge solo instruments by "if my cat runs away". And, from the first notes of the Edgar Russ violin, my cat jumped off the top of her little tree from her nap, and started getting further away. So, there must be some piercing thing that I can't hear going on. She didn't mind the Alf fiddle as much ... but then went into the other bedroom when the Mateo violin was played. I honestly thought all 3 were excellent. Of the violins I own, only my Rena Weisshaar violin makes the cat run. I also have a "workshop" Edgar Russ Guarneri made in Germany I think, and the cat doesn't mind that one. A decent fiddle too, but no comparison to the one you played. Keep making videos please!

I liked the sound of the second one you played. Comments on the video: first of all, thank you for doing this. I would've liked of little more specifics - you speak in vague terms of the nature of the sound holes. And the beauty of the instruments. I would've liked a little more description on the difference between a G Violin and the Strad, also, you could've said a little more specifics about what is the difference between the varnish from Cromona. You could've added some close-ups, and used a specific terms. Just constructive feedback. Thank you very much!
I would prefer the Edgar Ross violin. The sound is unbelievably, very expressive and smooth. For a hobby violinist, such an instrument is just a dream. But who knows... miracles also happen😉🎻 Thank you ... Many greetings from Germany

Hello: two quick questions if I may? What were the strings that you were using on the violins? Were the same brand of strings used on each of the violins? And what was the bow you were using? Thanks very much.
Hi John, thanks for asking! We used Peter Infeld strings on two of the instruments and Dominant Pro on the third. These were all selected to fit each instrument and get the best possible sound. We used a bow by Emilio Slaviero who is a wonderful bowmaker based in Cremona!

The last one is the one.
Only two seconds in: it looks like the "Leduc" on the very left. Then middle, hmm.... a variation on the Vieuxtemps? And the last one on the right, maybe something close to the Lord Wilton?
Just my guess before watching the video :) I would be absolutely astonished if I got 1 or 2 correct!

P.S. The left-hand-side violin at 0:22 REALLY does look like the "Leduc" Del Gesu..... I'm not sure what's happening here.

To my ears the Guarniery del Gesu sounds better than the Stradiarius violin. It has a much broad spectrum of frequencies that is more balanced. The Strads have a higher frequency spectrum bias. At least to my ears. All the instruments that you played sounded awesome though.

What we need is a violin sound that comes out best on a laptop .So Number 2 for me . But is that fair ? I don`t know .
I imagine one master luthier making the same Guarnari model that each violin will have slightly differing characteristics?

Edgar uses an Amber (resin used in Jewellery) and oil fused varnish (home cooked)

To my ear, the second violin sounded the best for the non-classical music which I would prefer to play
Second one by a long stretch.
All 3 violins are beautiful and nicely played too. The 1st is probably the most powerful with rich overtones . The 2nd is somewhat similar but with a gentler streak. The 3rd inhabits a different soundscape and has the kind of tone one associates with a Strad . At no point do they sound mushy or dull and one wants to continue listening. I have a Guarneri model MJZ925- what do you think of it? Finally how much do these violins cost? Thanks.
Actually, I have 2 cats ... well, really they are my wife's ... but only one of them is a true connoisseur of violin tone, and will run away from any good violin. I can hear brightness, clarity - but that cat can hear something else. Not sure what it is. The old one just lays there though, and could care less.

First 2, but Gregg Alf (2nd one) has a clear, balanced, warm yet projecting and far reaching. The 3rd one is just loud, I don’t feel the warmth.

Im planning to improve my violin, i particular like the Edgar Russ, but also looking for good violin makers in uk, but I don’t know many of them in uk.

I believe the first Edgar Russ violin has great potential, particularly in terms of its sound on the G and E strings. For the second violin, the bass is thick and the treble is broken. The third violin has average sound quality

Violins made from Similar Guarneri models. So Different models made by different makers ..That`s a big difference then . Try a video with three makers on the exact same model . Or Three Different models made by the same maker .Do you see where I`m going ? Reducing confusion .

You shouldn't play only single note Sibelius, Bach g-minor would be good ...
And 50 bucks says the AVERAGE listener couldn't tell the difference between any of them and an Amazon Chinese factory violin.
When played by a pro like this fellow, you’re right. Mostly. Try to drive the E string that hard on a cheap fiddle, well, it might respond with a muffled screech.

Can someone please tells me what kind of disease is this , I have a pupil on violin 12 years old, when she sings the pieces concertinos, etudes etc. that I give her she sings in perfect hearing, pitch. But when she plays it on violin the same pieces she is terrible, she misses everything, intonation is terrible, it sounds like different piece, I cannot change it, her fingers seems ok and the left hand, it has to be some disease connection brain with hand and fingers or something, dont know🤣🤣🤣

@@fatdoi003 I am, with other pupils its ok, in 15 years of work thats the first case of mine like that, I was talking with some other teachers and they have the same problems with some their pupils

So you don't believe a luthier should be paid for the amount of time and training that goes into making a great violin, as well the cost for exquisite materials? Surely you're not a violinist.

@@Andrejviolaluthiers can spend months on an instrument and more than 200 hours on each so they only deserve 5000 euros... That's less than 25euros an hour plus materials, equipment, consumables.... Seriously?
