      Fun fact: there was an infamous case of an extinct animal called ‘Megarachne’, which was originally thought to be the largest spider ever to have lived, so was named this. Mega-arachne. Big spider. It turns out it wasn’t a spider, and was actually a group commonly known as sea scorpions (now extinct) which aren’t actually scorpions, and megarachne specifically actually lived in freshwater and was quite small for the group.
      So, Megarachne, the massive spider sea scorpion, which is actually none of those things.

    I'm SURPRISED this is the first occurrence of convergent evolution in Pokémon. Convergent evolution-the repeated evolution of similar traits in multiple lineages which all ancestrally lack the trait-is rife in nature. Yet in Pokémon this is the first CONFIRMED instance of convergent evolution. The ultimate cause of convergence is usually a similar evolutionary biome, as similar environments will select for similar traits in any species occupying the same ecological niche, even if those species are only distantly related. So this is not the same as say a regional variant, where Pokémon will gain new abilities and traits and typings in order to adapt to a new environment. And I don't think the pikaclones count, as you can argue they all have a common ancestor.

    I'm thinking the evolution of Wiglett will have a bit of a Hydreigon-inspired design where it looks like Dugtrio, but two of the "heads" are actually arms with fake eyespots that are adept at slapping foes silly and, with the shellfish and eel based design of Wiglett and Gooey Ability option, could evolve into the Water/Fighting "Slugtrio" to fit the slapping and Gooey aspects (also a bit like a wild wacky inflatable tube man-meets-tube worm).

    While Wiglett may be the first "official" example of convergent evolution acknowledged in Pokemon, I've seen people argue that there have been examples of this in past games, like Plusle and Minum or Volbeat and Illumise. Some people say all the Pikachu clones from each gen are examples of convergent evolution. It'll be cool if you did a video diving into this topic (if you haven't done so already).

    • @pkmntrainermark8881
      @pkmntrainermark8881 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      People keep saying that, but it makes no sense. Plusle and Minun are both obviously the same sort of thing. They share an ancestor, not convergent evolution. Same for the two fireflies.

    • @CaptainObliviousV
      @CaptainObliviousV ปีที่แล้ว +35

      With Volbeat and Illumise, it could be argued that they’re just gender counterparts of a single species but with enough differences to warrant distinction; much like Nidoking and Nidoqueen’s lines. As for the Pikachu clones, Pachirisu is confirmed to be directly related to Pikachu according to Professor Laventon’s entry in Legends Arceus’ Dex, so it’s safe to say the other ones are related to some degree as well.

    • @OriginalGameteer

      The only idea I've seen suggested that I think could be a looser example of convergence is the Electrode and Amoongus families. I would have gone with "The Eel Pokémon" myself, however.

    4:11 I literally cheered at this, I could only dream of it
    Edit: my favorite idea for its evolution being a 3 split evolution as a reference to dugtrio without having that be the boring evo, and it could be affected by where it is when it hits a certain level, in the water would be a tube worm like one, on a beach would be the clam one, and in a cave for khezu

  • @veledwin1
    @veledwin1 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The fake webinar said that Wiglett already live underwater too in addition to the beach.
    I love how they're based on garden eels, who basically have a Diglett face already, as well as clams and tube worms. Pokémon that combine multiple similar animals are fun (like Klawf being based on multiple species of crab), but it's even more fun when the source animals are completely unrelated but just look similar (which really drives home the convergent evolution theme)

    Yes many inspirations for Paldea... including pal like friends and Chaldea, Pal dea, the ties to astronomy, some Sumerian inspiration with those legendaries, just for those that don't know since Lockstin didn't mention it.

    The evo of this pokemon is really whats gonna make or break it for me personally tbh. If the evo doesn't add something clever then it just feels like a cop-out excuse to make another regional without calling it one. If it wasn't directly called convergence through the trailer then there's nothing distinguishing it, design wise, from a regional. Fingers crossed for more garden eel or clam traits. Or better yet, the wiglett form turns into more of a lure in the evo for prey like an angler fish thats under the sand, which I think would be perfect for this concept! Thats less convergence and more mimicry in terms of niche. Until then though I'm going to withhold my final opinion.

    • @gerriehetschaap1854
      @gerriehetschaap1854 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be completely fair though, this is a design that while looking like it could be a regional form, wouldn't make sense as a regional form. How would a mole-like creature such as Diglett adapt to become a garden eel? What would force a Diglett to live underwater? How could it live underwater? While not every regional form makes real world logical sense, like Alolan Raichu for example, they can all be logically explained by an existing Pokemon adapting to a different situation that makes at least some sense in universe.
      You can also add that if you were to make a garden eel pokemon in a vacuum, it would naturally end up sharing Diglett's most defining trait: always having a part of its body underground. Garden eels also have a very simple body type, something Diglett also shares. So if that's the case, it makes all the sense in the world that they lean into that. It can't be easily explained as a regional form due to where it lives, but it does resemble Diglett a lot, so let's make that its gimmick. Even if the evolution resembles Dugtrio, it still works as a solid Pokemon concept instead of a cop-out.

    I believe it’s more of allopathic speciation rather than convergent evolution. I think specifically it would be an example of a ring species but that would depend on if diglett can interbreed with wigglet. Could be wrong tho that’s just my evolutionary biology mind thinking.

Lamentu and Animaru (An-na-mar-ru) will live in peace with the pokemons and some humans that start a village as the boy as the village chief. Glad I'm not the only one who thought tube worms could be a rational evolution inspiration for Wiglett, though I do wonder if it actually won't have a multi-headed evo, or even just a different number of heads besides 3. Heck, maybe it'll go from Garden Eel to actual Eel (yeah, they actually aren't related, but both can have cute moments).
    Unrelated: petition to give Razor Clams the nickname "Mollusk Hotdog"
