The toll of climate change, from US to the Marshall Islands: 'No one's an exception'

  • If global temperatures rise more than 1.5C, the Marshall Islands are likely to disappear.

The thin atolls scattered across the Pacific Ocean are already seeing regular flooding and droughts directly related to climate change. More Marshallese are leaving in search of dry land, with nearly one-third of the population currently in the US. Many fear that with the exodus, their culture will be lost to a country that has already taken so much from them.

When that day comes to an end to our island, just how long can we all hold on to our culture. We have Marshallese people here in the US who have troubles speaking the language.

I'm not sure climate change isn't cyclical. I do know cleaner energy and waste needs to change. And my heart goes out to these people. Sorry for treating your people terribly. But you won't be the first or last culture this government destroys.

You may not be sure, but climate scientists actually know what they are doing and saying. No where in history do we see evidence that climate has changed so fast. Our reliable records go back about 2 million years.

100 % sure these islands will disappear. Number one reason, erosion. That close to sea level every wave takes some of the island away. They are living on the the remains of a volcano. Soft rock that was eroded away by being blasted by waves and sand. A coral reef formed around this extinct , eroded away volcano. Coral reefs are different than volcanic rock. They are an under water " organism".
The next paragraph I took from a web site.
Coral reefs are large underwater structures composed of the skeletons of coral, which are marine invertebrate animals. The coral species that build coral reefs are known as hermatypic or"hard" corals because they extract calcium carbonate from seawater to create a hard, durable exoskeleton that protects their soft, sac-like bodies.
This coral reef that once thrived under water is now exposed to different oxygen levels and uv rays and not capable to rebuild and maintain it's structure.

it never ceases to amaze me the extent to which people have no idea how serious the changes related to climate change are... Places like the Marshall Islands are done for. people the first world are under some illusion that if we drive Prius cars and recycle we can stop by the change. the problem is we have release too much heat into the environment. we will all experience massive changes many of us will die because of these changes do to scarcity comma War comma disease cetera

It's a myth that coral atolls are sinking due to anthropogenic sea level rise for two reasons.
First, coral atolls only exist because the underlying volcano is sinking into the sea floor. The reefs and islands are extensions of the reefs that ringed the volcanic island when it first formed thousands of years ago. The atoll islands, which are constantly appearing, disappearing, and moving, are deposits of coral debris thrown up in storms and will persist until eroded away. If you pave over one of these islands and build on it, such as was done in the Maldives, this will prevent replenishment and it will sink. This would happen even if global sea level wasn't rising.
Second, there has been no anthropogenic sea level rise. This is well documented both in the global tide gauge records and in several recent peer-reviewed papers. Whatever is causing sea level to rise now was causing it to rise at the same rate during the Lincoln administration. It isn't caused by CO2 emissions so stopping CO2 emissions would have no effect.

Look it up if you don't believe me. A recent survey by Kench of satellite images over decades has shown that 14% of uninhabited islands have shrunk, 43% have stayed the same, and 43% have grown. Many have moved significantly. Or are you a science denier?

George Applegate I'm not going to waste my time chasing down anti-climate change reports I don't need to go look up some esoteric report that's way off in the corner of the internet when I could just go on to the internet and look at the Arctic Circle and see that the ice is the lowest it's ever been every year is hotter than the last every month is harder than the last excetera excetera and so on it is simple chemistry and thermodynamics more heat equals hotter Earth if you change the chemical composition of our atmosphere guess what you change the environment it becomes hotter or colder depending on how you change the chemistry people arguing against climate change are dumb as dumb can possibly be you might as well lead a crusade Against Gravity

Better learn to adapt as your ancestors did. Just be happy that the rate of sea level rise is much less than it used to be and will continue to decrease as the world enters a cooling period.

Atolls and small islands also eventually sink. They’re what’s left of ancient volcanoes. They erode, and eventually disappear. Doesn’t ALWAYS have to be about climate change and oceans rising. Those island were really high at one point, and eroded to what they are today long before climate change.

We will know you guys are serious when you stop mass immigration, moving people with high birth rates from low emission country’s to high emission country’s on mass is probably the worst thing you could do for the climate. I care deeply about environment but it’s making it very hard to believe you guys actually care when we see the people pushing the narrative, flying in private jets and advocating for open borders.
