Who can dislike this? Sir Rattle is never RATTLED! Always a consummate director who doesn't have to "command" respect from his orchestras, he just EARNS it!
I played this song in high school, I adored it and we lovingly called it the Jellyfish song with the bassoon parts being so light and bouncy. I don't play anymore but it brings me back to when I loved playing this instrument, it's bittersweet, I loved the instrument but my program made me absolutely hate playing music in general. Makes me want to pick it up again but life is busy and expensive. Anyways! This is a lovely and astounding performance I wish I could have seen!
If Prince Philip were conducting would he jab his fingers like that? Nope, that's the whole point. There is amazing control here, everything is flowing from Rattle's direction. Stunning, the tension, the line, the excitement. Wow.
It, in my opinion, this rendition lacks some fire. I feel that it omits the darkly humorous aspect that I thought Berlioz wanted... I love the versions where the brasses are louder and the march is more emphasized by the bass drum. I have a copy on cd that really satisfies... unfortunately it was burnt back in the days of Napster and I don't know who the orchestra and conductor are.
Overall , it's cool , but it sounds as if they are not performing as a whole , rather in different sections only . It is also a bit weak and the atmosphere can be more intense or scary as well.
Your ear needs a LOT of work. This is one of the BEST orchestra/conductor combinations right now, maybe ever. Simon Rattle has his own interpretation of the music, which is a bit more reserved in the tutti section. Nothing wrong with that. Why bash that? I think you are entirely wrong in everything you just stated. Keep practicing.
Sam might be referring to the way it's recorded/produced. There is very little ensemble sound and it is very closely miked. That seems to be the style these days, especially with NY Phil. Orchestras do not sound like this in the hall. However, they do sound like this when you're sitting on stage playing.
@@starwarsjunkie7776 nice copy and paste intro. Your right that Simon can use what ever interpretation, but from an execution standpoint the orchestra is kind of a mess. The horns were extremely out of tune at the beginning, and there were a few moments where time was bad. So in short, YOUR ear needs a lot of work. XD
I've only taken piano lessons, and took them for about 10 years. Loved it, but only ever did solo recital performances... I've never known anything about conducting, I've never understood it while watching conducting... And even less watching this one. 😆🤣😂🤣😆 Haha
RestlessPenguin most of the time the tubas do play the same thing. That’s why most orchestras only have one on staff. But Berlioz has two in most of his music.
Yeah maybe for this movement... but the last movement.... watch the video excerpt with sergio rehearsing second tuba with signapore.... dang thats some tuba playing.
The brass sound produced here completely misrepresents what Berlioz intended! These modern French horns are wrong. Only surpassed in wrongness by the trombone section. Trombones in Berlioz’s orchestra were of a dramatically smaller bore and brighter! This is like replacing 1963 Corvettes with 1958 Buick Roadmasters! If Berlioz wasn't already dead, this performance would most certainly be the lethal blow that finishes him off! Battle is responsible for this musical fraud!
Berlioz wrote for the instruments that were around. They've improved. These sound great, especially in the kind of modern concert hall that holds so many people. Berlioz would've loved this. I can't prove that, but nor can you prove otherwise.
I hate this video because the conductor Rattle has the brass section play the march very softly. That's a very strange interpretation of this piece. Not exciting at all. Very flat and boring.
Awful performance; awful filming and vision mixing. God Almighty, we are seeing this repertoire *buried alive* -- yet everyone goes on *getting paid*...
Awful comment, awful person, awful taste. Sure there are itty bitty mistakes but I still bet after four years you could not come close to the skill of a single one of these mucisians, such disrespect to Berlioz.

It just shows how little I know for I thought the performance was absolutely superb, it left me feeling relieved to have kept my head.
Sir Rattle has the LSO in fantastic form. Bravo! Sounds great.

fantastical ...
Just caught a glims of Mr Harrild, gonna have to watch the whole symphony now!! Great to see Ben Thomson.
He looked sad he wasn't playing.
This piece can be addictive, we’ve been learning about this piece I’m school and I pretty much wanna marry it
It’s a good recording I just wished there was more pedal during the march from the bass trombone
The 1st trombone part sure is a struggle, hitting that eb at the top without using an alto trombone is impressive for anyone
Kill me now my audition is in a week gotta play it on the tenor 😭
@@quintonkrull5086 you poor soul, good luck :)

No, I suspect the chap sitting next to him playing first tuba is the principal tuba.
@James Ernst he was until a couple of years ago, now a guest player

What a treat.

It’s ‘mf’ tbh

I don't know why the bass trombone didn't blast the pedal note
bass trombone part is the best
what's the genre of this among the 4 options:
1) symphony
2) ballet
3) Sonata form
4) concerto
Those aren’t genres, they’re forms within the classical genre.
