    I'm a bit daunted by my T2 as I'm literally learning all on it from scratch from TH-cam videos: restoration planning, welding, dent repair, rust prevention, paint prep, mechanics, electric system... But seeing you and others going at it is both encouraging and motivating. Thanks for the inspiration.

      Hey, thank you so much for your comment. I completely understand this is my first time owning a VW T2. It is a massive learning adventure but honestly the best way is just to go for it and if you ever get stuck there are always VW enthusiasts happy to help I’ve had so much support from other VW owners while doing my project. 🤘🤘

    Think your doing good. I use rust treatment first then i use fibre glass liquid to block the pin holes. It stops the filler sucking up moisture and blowing it out eventually. I always think a fews cuts or a weld burn means a good days work.

      Hey buddy, thank you for your comment. Yes annoyingly it is of an earlier van, a friend had an old one that he was breaking, so I thought I’d salvage some parts off it . once it’s all welded up, I can adapt it to make it look like a later arch by adding some trim i’m on a bit of a budget so if I can make something fit it’s going on🤣🤘

    AT2 will improve your welding skills way more than a Landrover. I had an American T2 1700 with twin cards. Went real fast and it wasn't tuned, easily kept up with motorway traffic. You will certainly appreciate Landrovers more in the future. I used to like taking new ones for 'flying' lessons

    I used to repair T2s over 25 years ago. Many were getting close to being scrap back then, due to the high cost of MOT welding.
    Today they are MOT exempt, so bearing in mind the money a rotten old dog, with a shiny paint job sells for, there are a good number of T2s on the road, which are unsafe, some of them pretty dangerous.
    Its well worth having someone who knows exactly what they are doing have a look, as 40+ years of bodged "repair" work, in most cases is going to mean a van which is NEVER going to be safe, unless it's professionally restored, which in most cases is likely to cost a fair bit more than the van is worth.
    If you choose to use disposable gas bottles, the cost of the welding work is probably going to be double. The disposable bottles are very expensive, and run out pretty quickly.
    First thing to do on a T2 is to assess the underside, the rear axle beam needs very careful inspection, as many of these have been badly bodged over the years. Make a list of all the body parts/panels required, and try to avoid the very cheap ones, as there is a good reason they are cheap.
    It's easy for a pro restorer to spend several weeks on one of these, if it's bad, and that's worth bearing in mind. Budget at least £2-3k for a reasonable paint job, and maybe £5k for mechanical if it's poor condition.

    • @arniethet2920
      @arniethet2920  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, thank you for your comment, I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately the last owner of this van has done many bodge jobs which we are now discovering as we cut further into it we do plan on repairing the structural bodged jobs to a better standard, and then getting the vehicle structurally tested before we use it just to be safe as I’ve got kids, don’t want them in a dangerous vehicle.

    • @humourless682
      @humourless682 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@arniethet2920 Bodging was a big problem on T2s, even when they still needed MOT tests. You need to find some way of safely getting it far enough off the ground, to carefully inspect every part of the underside.
      Look very closely at all the areas which are safety related, and bear in mind if the top parts have been bodged, the same thing will go for the underside.
      You can get most parts for T2s, but they aren't easy vehicles to work on, and probably not a good thing to learn to weld on. Ditch the disposable gas bottles, and get a 50L rental free pro type bottle of argon/co2.
      Many years ago, I had to repair a T2 which had just been "restored" at a cost of £3k+ (a lot of money then!), which had pretty much every bodge under the sun on it. Cost the owner about the same money again, to overcome the effects of the "restoration" work...............
