Yeah I hear you it's a process. Retro Rager has a card that's plug and play. Little pricey but it saves a lot of time. I recently reviewed it here on the channel.

Balenaetcher didn't work at all for me. Tried 4 times, and failed to verify my fresh out of the box 512gb micro sd. It then split the drive into 2 partitions. I gave up
The same happened for me I dunno why.. didn’t work on nt so I tried ex fat and it solved my problem… I had to try like 4 or 5 times also but I got it done… you can too
is that bios still available? Nothing comes up via the wayback machine and I don't see a link here

Is possible to configure a shortcut in Steam Os so we can launch batocera in one click, like it was a installed game? Without needing to reboot the system holding the volume button and selecting Batocera as the boot system

I cant seem to install windows games. They seemed to work on my mini pc Batocera but not on the Deck version. Some install but just don't want to run. Very frustrating 😢

Sometimes When Vailidating The Flash Failed I've Done That Before
Appreciate how cool the interface looks and everything but for the time it takes to compile a library in Emudeck I'd rather spend the extra time with my kids...
In my experience Emudeck is buggy as hell. I've tried it several times with the Steam Rom manager and it's failed each time.
I tried this but when it came to connecting to my WiFi network, Batocera would not show ANY networks. Yes, I did turn on the Deck's WiFi. I tried manually entering my SSID and password but it still would not connect. Rebooted the Steam Deck and tried again. Same results, no WiFi networks found.
The Deck has no problems seeing all the networks in my area including my own when running Steam OS, but not in Batocera. Frustrating as hell.
Can I ask where do you download the rom game?
For the SD Card is only the Sandisk the recommended one? What about other brands like Xiaomi? and whats more preferable the Sandisk Extreme or Ultra?
Great video and found it easy to follow... But i can't seem to grab any images no more one asks for a password in French and the other don't grab anything..does make the package look dull.
For some reason my pc does not have a quick access option in file explorer. It only says home. Whenever I type in the ip for the steam deck it just loads up the internet

At the time of the video there was no 36 bios available anywhere

Your os should be safe. It's operating off the SD card and only interacts within the SD card.
Nice tutorial, man! Question: how can I hide unwanted systems from the menu? Let's say I won't play Atari or Commodore, how can I delete or hide them? Thanks a lot!
Delete the games from those systems and update your games lists.
Or,if you want to keep the games but just hide certain a systems go to settings/games collection settings/systems displayed/scroll down the list and untick any system you don't want shown.

Not sure what you mean by desktop mode? Is it a pre build image with games already included? Then just hide any systems you dont want shown.

Why does balenaEtcher turn my 1tb micro into a 7gb?
It's creates 2 partitions.
The 7GB you see is the boot partition that's in fat32.
The second partition is by default in ext4 which windows can't read.
i think its easier on linux in inserting those file on sd card with batocera.
This looks awesome. I have the OLED Steam Deck and every time I try to run the image I get a Black Screen, I have tried 3 different memory cards and different devices to write them,
but I also receive a black screen. Can anyone Please help? Thanks in advance.
At the time it had issues with the OLED deck but v39 which is available now should be working fine on the OLED model.

You need a different rom. There's 2 player and 4 player versions. I forget which is which as it doesn't really make much sense since 1 version you can only be one character and the other version you can be any of the characters on there.

Great video. I'm having a issue hoping someone can help me with. I can get the Switch games to launch no issue but the controls are completely out of wack. Ive tried remapping an it does nothing controls stay the same. Does it with every switch game Ive tried other than that everything works perfectly
Yeah I ran into that too. There may be a fix but I never tried. I only wanted to play a couple games and the games I wanted were only off by one button.
Dude can you access the batocera file system in the SD card in desktop mode? because if you can I'm just dock my deck and mod my deck with my deck using raspberry pi imager

Can the SD card still be utilized to play games on the steam deck, or will i need another card for that?
If you have batocera on the card you add the games right on there and boot the card up on your steam deck. It's completely separate from steam os.

When adding ROMS, should they be zipped???
Each collection of games has different requirements. Some need to be unzipped some zipped. Most are going to be unzipped. Mame is zipped.
Why wouldn't it be easier to just manually transfer the roms instead of over wifi?
You do either or but for those not using an adapter or docking station manually moving roms over wouldn't be possible. Many who first get their steam deck don't have that yet but want to get started so anybody can go the wifi route right from the start.
@Retro Gaming Guy agreed. I have the docking station and many roms and my wifi is slow as molasses; thus the manual route.

I'm not a mac user so I'm not sure about that. Probably but I wouldn't know my way around that side of things.

You said several times you'd include stuff like the bios files link or the sd card reader link in the description but did not. I can figure it out I'm jus saying. I cannot figure out where the second sd card comes into play? you say its necessary but only show one sd card the one with the batocera on it being used to load in on the deck but how on earth does it recognize the bios files that are on a seperate card when you don't show that 2nd card being used..
There's only one sd card. Not sure where you are getting 2 from? You load bios files into the bios folder on the card. Links change and with this being a slightly older video now they stopped working so I removed them.
Hi my friend! Is that possible to delete any of the systems I don't want to see and use in Batocera, like Pc Engine and Amiga for example or it would affect Batocera System? Just in terms of organisation of the folders.
If you dont have roms in any rom folders, by default the system wont show.
Also, you can delete the few freeware roms Batocera comes with, thats fine.
Or, you can always choose to 'hide' a system too, say if you have roms in a certain folder but for some reason you dont want it showing, ofcourse hiding will still take up storage space.

I got a loaded micro sd with the program and a ton of games. Works great in handheld mode, but wont let me see it on my tv when i hook to the steam dock.

You added the necessary bios files? Run a bios check in the main menu and make sure none are missing
Watched this and just ordered my steam deck! Just looking at sd cards any you recommend?
1tb go with sandisk as Samsung doesn't make that capacity but otherwise Samsung is my go to. I find them to be better quality and not reliable in my experience anyways .

Kinda a lazy question. In your steam deck Batocera build how do I navigate to a specific emulator to change settings?
You're going to hold down the button you make a selection with so say you want to go into Mario kart 64 just as an example navigate to the game and then hold down the button you choose the game with. This opens up a window and toward the bottom you'll see "advanced options" select that and you'll have a emulator option you can select different emulators there.

Thanks so much for the video. Quick question: I've done all the steps on a 256 gb sd card. When I go to add the bios, rom and save folders via network share it says there isn't enough space. I have redone the partition to make the whole sd card available and it still says not enough space available. What can I do to fix this sir.

Any capacity card is fine as long as you don't overcram it with games

Yeah with a docking station just connect a flash drive or a sd with your roms to the docking station and drag and drop them into the files. I assume you mean using batocera.
Instead of transferring files from PC by Wi-Fi, can't you just connect the Steam Deck to PC via USB-C and transfer files that way?

I successfully flashed the 1 tb batocera image to a 1 tb SanDisk A2 card, and when I'm able to get to the Boot Manager screen where you can select the micro sd card.... but when I do the screen just goes black and it says there pretty much forever.

I'm having a hard time finding a minimum size requirement for the sd card. I don't want to accidentally get one too small but I also don't want to pay the price for a 1tb card or even a 512gb. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
It depends on what size image you want to create or download. I'd go with a 256gb if you want decent size collections and want to stay under 512gb. Samsung or sandisk are the only cards I'd recommend

Do you need to do any specific settings for adding games like when u do it on the steam interface? Or these will just run?
Nothing special needs to be done. Drop them in and add your bios then you're good to go. Some collections may require some minor tweaking like ps3 your roms have to be renamed to include .ps3 extensions. Some roms need to be unzipped some don't. Depends on each emulator/game collection but for the most part what's seen here is all you need to do.

if you have problems with etcher try the tool from rasperry - it works with less rights and for mine under 7 really good
...was testing something and etcher did'nt wants to get in workscreen out of the box - someone mentions unetbootin too
Well if you want to setup such like devices with batocera do best way following:
- Extract image to your desired ramcard.
- Stick it in your device
- start the engine
- setup network
- connect via remote ssh
complete your install directly on the device with console (batocera brings MC too in those package)
