There are manly two types of Chinese lion dance which are the Northern Lion Dance and the Southern Lion Dance the Lion dance which is more common is the Southern lion dance. The Chinese Northern Lion Dance in Chinese is called Bei Shi Dance is often performed by a male and female lion in the north of China. The Northern Lion Dance may have a wooden head painted gold with shaggy red and yellow hair with a red bow to indicate a male lion dance and a green bow sometimes (green hair) to represent a female lion dance. There are however regional variations of the lion dance. The Northern Lion Dance resembles a Pekingese or a Fu Dog and its movements are lifelike during a performance. Acrobatics are very common with stunts like lifts,or balancing on a tiered platform,or on a giant ball. There may be also older lions and a younger lion. There may be two people in the older lion and one person in the younger lion. There may be a “warrior” character who holds a spherical object which will lead the lion dance. The Chinese Southern Lion Dance in Chinese is called Nan or Cantonese Lion Dance originated in Guangdong China. The Southern Lion Dance has a single horn and is associated with the legend of the mythical beast called Nian. The head of the lion is traditionally constructed with papier-mâché over a bamboo frame covered with gauze, then painted and decorated with fur. It’s body is made with a durable layered cloth also trimmed with fur. Newer lions however use aluminum instead of bamboo and are lighter. Newer versions may also apply shinier modern material over the traditional lacquer such as sequin or laser sticker, but they do not last as long as those with lacquer. Different types of fur are may be used in the modern lion. There are two types main styles of the Southern Lion Dance which are the Fut San Lion in Chinese is called Fo Shan meaning Buddha Mountain and the Hok San Lion in chinese is called He Shan meaning Crane Mountain.
