insanely happy you covered this. the biggest draw of japanese street style for me has always been their confidence and lack of boundaries for what is too weird to wear out on the street. the street snaps at tokyo fashion week always highlight consistently amazing ensembles compared to NY, milan, paris, etc... and the west is very slowly catching on, but it's so much harder to find people wearing similar things like full on comme des garcons runway looks or handmade costume outfits anywhere on social media. their uniquity is a different level. hopefully their style is put on the map more for people out here because i know some gold will be found that way
Currently in Japan and the style here is quite something else, you wouldn't see the amount of people I've seen confidently wearing their clothes in the West.
Of all the places I've been to and got a sense of the fashion scene there. Tokyo fashion has honestly been the best I've come across so far. The fashion of the Japanese is so mixed, creative, unique and so beyond anything I have seen before. It's honestly an amazing world of its own! It's honestly my favourite
Thanks Reggie! The effort is always appreciated. The inspiration from Japan is not like any other fashion in the world because the attention the individual outfits get can be whole looks for a runway but still find a space in a regular closet
After living in Japan for awhile, I formed a hypothesis: in the West there's a lot of variety in terms of body shape, height, weight, etc. It's always been this way. But in Japan, people are overall more similar in terms of size. In the West, women have traditionally tried to dress in a way that was "flattering," which often meant that they were trying to look thinner aka more youthful. But in Japan, everyone is slim (I'm talking about historically, not the modern age) so there are fashions that actually make you look bigger, not smaller--especially wider and more broad-shouldered. You really see this in costumes from kabuki and noh theatre. I think part of this idea has persisted down through history, which is why Japanese fashion sometimes appears costume-y or outlandish to us. They're doing the opposite of what we've been doing throughout history. (But an image of hoop skirts just popped into my head...though I think part of their appeal was that they made a woman's waist look tiny...) This is actually the first time I've ever bothered to write this down, but it's been in my head for a very long time.
You’re not too far off👍🏽! My background is actually in Japanese history and language so I have a little insight into the culture and heritage you’re theorizing. (My thesis was actually about the progression and accidental progressiveness of Japanese fashion) For much of Japanese history nearly identical clothing was worn by men and women and continued well into the 20th century. It wasn’t until the Meiji restoration that you begin to see gender specific clothing with the introduction of western styles. The Japanese tended to exclude women in a majority of entertainment and businesses so this furthered the ideas of what was acceptable for men to wear. As you may know traditional Kabuki theatre is still to this day exclusively male. With men being playing both genders. When you couple these ideas with traditional patterns and how Japanese presented themselves over the years you can see a direct line between what’s acceptable to be worn. And as it turns out, everything is fair game. It’s the reason fashion is incredibly dynamic in Japan. There are a range of styles in Japan and it’s hard to point out what in Vogue. What is evident however is a sense of technical and intentional methodology in styling. Which suggests that many of the practices of intricate layers and proper wearing techniques of traditional garments like kimono are maintained even when adopting western clothing. For Japanese there is a REASON why a certain color bag is chosen, or a belt hangs down a certain way, or a pant is cropped at a specific length. Everything is considered. And admittedly it’s so well done at times that it looks overdone to a western eye. Body type can play a role but generally it’s the cultural approach and values that makes Japanese fashion a bit more dynamic than a lot of western styles.
@susanma4899 that was a good insight ... interesting just go google japanese construction worker pants i came across 5 macho guys strutting next to me smoking away .... i thot what is this macho cosplay?!?! ... nope ... this was the most authentic natural cool i have ever seen ... haha but back to topic they are basically homogenous (in many other ways) so to stand out they must differentiate - gestalt theory haha they are also into animism / manga .. objects have souls so being a character is not alien (pun) to them i do like that this playful character of the japanese we are so judgemental .. as soon as someone looks like something we thot they are once you talk to them, they are as normal as us ... this is a great reminder being playful is a great way to live life .
It's "Fucking Fabolous" (Tom Ford) to see you covering this fashion. Asian culture is off the chain. I've been into it for decades but here is the problem. As a big man, I find it ridiculously hard to find fashionable styles. I'm so desperate I'm thinking I should start a fashion brand for BIG. Look at Sumo wrestlers they have amazing robes and how about older people. In this video at 3:13 in the video, there is an older Asian guy, with grey hair, round sunglasses, a white jacket, and a pair of the coolest blue-black plaid pants. Do you have anything like that? Please help me out. I'm an Afro-American web designer, and brand strategist living in Cebu Philippines. Asia is like getting pure oxygen to my spirit. Thanks for your content. My name is Charles give me a shout-out.
This kind of content is all that has been the missing ingredient on here. Reggie you are on such unique and advantageous location to give us more of this "genba ni", first hand insight. Please more of these.... Yes, I do understand and appreciate the studio stuff/ consultation gems you always drop, but it gets repetitive and monotonous sometimes. Looking forward for more exciting times ahead. Cheers!
Nobody does street style like the Japanese. They are the gift that keeps giving, the never-ending fountain of inspiration. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Great insight from both of you here👏👏
Very interesting thread
@susanma4899 that was a good insight ... interesting
just go google japanese construction worker pants
i came across 5 macho guys strutting next to me smoking away .... i thot what is this macho cosplay?!?! ...
nope ... this was the most authentic natural cool i have ever seen ... haha
but back to topic
they are basically homogenous (in many other ways) so to stand out they must differentiate - gestalt theory haha
they are also into animism / manga .. objects have souls
so being a character is not alien (pun) to them
i do like that this playful character of the japanese
we are so judgemental .. as soon as someone looks like something we thot they are
once you talk to them, they are as normal as us ...
this is a great reminder
being playful is a great way to live life
.
