    I lived in NYC for 50 years and I recently left it. I seen it change through the years. At this point is not the city I remember. Since I worked in Manhattan and commuted every day. I got tired of crime and homeless people. I never knew if anything would happen to me. So I retired and left. I truly hope it changes for the better.

    Like your video on the state of NYC. It reflects what is going on in other major cities. I grew up in Chicago. The crime rates are getting worse. People avoid Downtown. But the whole city is less safe. Last time I went to visit my sister we were making plans to visit our favorite restaurant. I asked if we should go for lunch or dinner. She said lunch, because no one goes out after dark in any part of the city anymore. How sad!

      No, it’s not. Crime is WAAAAAAY down trending. It ticked up slightly during Covid and now, but compared to the 90s? Still less than a quarter of the violence statistically.
      “Crime” is up on the rise bc cops are cracking down on minor shit like smoking weed (or smokin it where you’re not allowed).

      Where are you even from? Because cops in Chicago, like Ben was talking about, don't even bother with small stuff. It's not like that here. Do some actual research, so you can see the difference between now, and the 1990s....
      And yeah, I can't even walk around in River North anymore, especially not at night. Not even a block. I live in what is supposed to be a nice neighborhood, too, and people getting stuck up at gunpoint all the time, right outside. Gunshots within extremely close proximity are my regular ambient noise for both where I work and live.

      Living in Chicago suburbs most people I know avoid the city. I used to make bi-monthly trips for food, breweries, or theatre, but over the past 2 years I've been in the city once to pickup from a specific pizza place.

    • @hansonel
      @hansonel ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Chicago suburbanite here who goes into the city around once a week to visit friends and such. The entire city of Chicago not only feels more dangerous but crime has risen, even in neighborhoods that were low crime and safe (Lincoln Park, Lakeview, etc...). Due to most of the downtown office workers now working remotely from home The Loop and areas Downtown away from Michigan Avenue/ tourists attractions are less crowded and sometimes there's barely anyone on the block. At night there's not many people Downtown at all and it is not safe which makes it more likely you'll become a target. I usually leave the city when the sun starts going down which I would think was ridiculous pre-pandemic.
      Just like Cash was talking about subway ridership being down in NYC, it's the same thing with the CTA L trains. Crime and other nonsense is up on public transportation.... in addition to electrical malfunctions causing delays and large stretches of a line to shut down for an hour or so like what happened a few weeks ago in the Loop for all the elevated lines. I try to avoid taking the L when a few years ago I would ride it all the time without thinking twice and usually walk or take the bus.

    Seeing security guards being more interested in their phones than being vigilant about their surroundings does not give me the confidence to visit New York. My dream is to visit the Big apple and talking to New Yorkers on a trip to Disney World a few years ago they urged me to follow my dream, then Covid put the mockers on that and now I'm thinking of doing Tokyo instead as it's cleaner, safer, easier to get around and cheaper. I looked into going to NYC at the end of this August for my birthday and the hotels were just too expensive. I hope NYC can improve, but, I'm not hopeful.

      Security Goon here. Vigilance is useless when arrests are never made. We're absolutely not allowed to touch another human being (and if a Guard ever grabs you, threaten to sue his bond - in states that require one, anyway). The guns are only if you try to attack US. Security Guards have become ushers for the grand performance that is Security Theatre, and just like the rest of Security Theatre, we're nice to look at, but otherwise virtually useless, by decree. So, I have absolutely no problem with Security Guards slacking off in places like that, where crime isn't prosecuted. Our number one deterrent factor is being a witness at a suspect's trial - and, again, if they don't go to trial..?

You want to see a city where the people have enough pride in who and what they are that they keep it together even when things aren't going so well. As somebody who's visited New York many times and enjoy much of what that city offers, I've always thought it a shame that there's so many obvious problems that never get solved and simply range from bad to not as bad depending on the era.

And now I’m appalled and shocked at how disgusting the city has become since the pandemic. It’s in filthy free fall! The city is definitely headed in the wrong direction. The littering is out of control. There are rats everywhere. 86th Street is a major street with a major subway stop. It’s a cesspool. Crime & graffiti were bad decades ago too, & areas like the Bronx or Brooklyn were outright slums. NYC is what it is. @joshualebowitz ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@ultraviolettas Indeed, I am a New Yorker and have been since the 1970s. The mid-70s were the famous Daily News headline "Ford to City, Drop Dead," but New York City, as always, began to improve towards the end of the decade. By the mid-1980s, it seemed like NYC was destined to be magical again, when an unfortunate renewed decline began towards the end of the decade. The city remained less than ideal throughout the early to mid-1990s, however, by the end of the 1990s, NYC was hitting new heights, especially in terms of safety and opportunity, and seemed unstoppable as we moved into the new millennium. Sadly, the tragedy in 2001 ended all of that and New York slowly spent the next decade rebuilding its momentum. By 2008-2009, NYC was starting to hit new heights that it hadn't seen in decades. By the early 2010s, safety and opportunity were in a record position and it seemed like there was nothing that NYC couldn't achieve. By mid-2014 into 2015, unfortunately, it became clear that NYC was losing its momentum and it started to slowly decline towards the end of the decade. By 2019, one could already feel the decrease in quality of life all over the city. The beginning of the pandemic, in early 2020, then decimated the city. For a variety of reasons, subsequent to such time, despite the less than ideal newly launched "We Love NYC" campaign, NYC is nowhere near where it was just a decade ago. NYC always rebounds and it will again. It can't be held down and its best days remain ahead of it.

    Thanks, Cash! A most informative and very needed video. Having spent my working years in one of the largest American cities, I remember the 1960s as being on-the-whole safe, day and night. That same city has areas where visiting at any time would be unthinkable in 2023. The filth, the crime, the disregard for others is shocking.
    As for working from home, I've been retired for 15 years and the thing I miss most is the week-day office camaraderie. IMO, those who spend their lives in home offices without real need are missing out by not having face-to-face human interaction. Friendly co-workers in offices just a few feet away, office luncheons and holiday parties, celebrating together when individuals get employee-of-the-month bonuses and promotions--these are things you remember fondly after your retirement. I even miss the hour commute on occasion...LOL...but not very much.

No turnstiles. It works because the cities are well run and the culture is different. I’m a native New Yorker. NYC goes through cycles of good and bad periods. Often tied to competency of the mayor in office. The Bloomberg years were terrific.

    This might get buried, but the cop pay thing was done on purpose by the police union years ago to put the budget burden on new cops instead of the one who have been in the force for years, like the ones who run the union.
    " Mayor Bloomberg placed the blame for the low starting pay on the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, claiming the union wanted to go to binding arbitration rather than negotiate with the city and then agreed to the reduction in order to enhance the wallets of existing members.
    “[It] was done at the request of the PBA,” Bloomberg said. “They wanted to move monies from those who hadn’t joined the department to those who’ve been there a long time.”

    I was born and raised in Queens. This degradation of the city in terms of crime is cyclical. This reminds me of the late 80’s early 90’s. All of this is consistent with what the subway was like when I was in high school. Crime comes along with the vastness of the system and population. It will cycle out again as the economy improves. The city never has the resources to cover everything. Most people can’t afford to live in Manhattan. They always figure out how to recruit and attract more police. Bryant park library is the most beautiful. Spent many hours there. Keeping rent high also keeps people spending money on travel, subway, tolls etc.

      The homeless issue is so bad, where can they go!? and get mental help if needed!? most us just living in this city need mental help at this point!

  • @Prosey
    @Prosey ปีที่แล้ว +3

    With work-from-home the city is losing money but the landlords charging exorbitant rents have contributed greatly to this issue and driven people out of the city. Many have said it before--those empty office buildings can be made into apartments (that people can afford). Then everyone who works from home can make those areas home and spend their money there. To try to force people back to work so they spend their money at the businesses around work, but can't afford to live around work, is ridiculous.
    Comparing crime data from pre-covid to post-covid is disingenuous. Covid caused a major global upheaval affecting all aspects of life across the world. Crime in NYC IS on its way down (you can check the NYPD crime data site) save for grand larceny. Perhaps the landlords charging the exorbitant commercial rents should be required to provide security for their tenants.

    I'm a life long New Yorker who has not taken the subway in years. Fortunately for me, I live in Manhattan and no longer have to venture out to the boroughs which are difficult to access by bus. You bring up so many great safety points but one that stands out is not taking your phone out. First, you have to be aware of what is going on around you at ALL times; second, someone can easily snatch your phone and/or toss it onto the tracks which sometimes leads to three, NEVER go there to grab your phone, wallet, etc.
    I was in midtown yesterday and it seems even more empty than a year ago. Cafes and restaurants have closed due to no lunch business and it's downright depressing.

    Conspicuously absent from the video are the REASONS crime and homelessness are on the rise. Insane rents brought on by developing companies, inflation caused by various geopolitical factors but also companies themselves simply wanting to increase profits, and stagnant wages all lead to a lack of opportunity, which is why the amount of homeless increases and the property crimes increase as well. The only people able to afford the city tend to be wealthier and thus more likely to be targets.

    I worked for a single owner real estate company some years back. He had a very nice office at 1040 Ave of the Americas and I enjoyed bringing prospective clients there to discuss and show them it wasn't a fly by night operation. That's gone and he set up within another established RE office. Sorry to see you've dropped your office but yes, We Work is a good option when needed. As for crime, the worst thing was no cash bail as it created a revolving door putting perps back on the street in hours. During my entire work life in NYC and my hang out days of playing gigs in every club from the east village to the Apollo Theatre into the wee hours, I've never been accosted on the streets or in the subway. I started watching your videos to get a feel for urban spaces. I write science fiction so a feel for modern apartments helps convey the space (or lack there of) characters may still experience in urban spaces in the future.
    The things you brought up do not surprise me. With very few exceptions, the cheapest apartments you've shown me go for about $1000 a month and are still in very rough-looking neighborhoods, do not have laundry facilities in the apartment itself, and are less then a fifth the size of my townhouse in Northeastern Pennsylvania. A three bed, 1and 3/4ths bath, house where I pay a little more then half of the average low-end rent. And that's the scuzzy end of the city. The parts where an outsider would like to live, the parts where you can leave your place without packing something, cost at least double for an entry-level place. Meanwhile, the micro-apartments seen in Japan may be little more then glorified closets but at least they're priced at a rate people can afford and placed in decent-looking neighborhoods.
    The only thing more concerning about the crime is the lack of police and how the mayor plans on paying officers something closer to what they're worth. It's understandable why people are leaving the NYPD; unfortunately that's a nationwide problem, not just a New York one. Unsurprisingly high risk, surprisingly low pay, and some VERY LOUD groups calling to vilify them and cut their budgets further. No wonder there's less of them then normal.
    Though on the flipside, slashing library funding is not a good idea. Not without asking a bunch of questions first. Do the libraries of NYC have afterschool programs? Those help keep kids occupied until their parents can pick them up. Do the libraries maintain public access computer labs? Those help people that don't have a computer apply for jobs? Adult learning courses? Those can help teach job skills. Cutting any of these things can indirectly lead to an increase in various kinds of crime.
