British intelligence fears Germany may be close to a weapon that could win them World War II. As German scientists cultivate a fledgling nuclear weapons program at a heavy water plant in Telemark, Norway, the British devise a plan to infiltrate and sabotage the heavily-guarded plant. This is the story of the special operation forces who led those missions-the men of Operation Grouse, Operation Freshman, and Operation Gunnerside.

I know quality content creators need to make income to support their efforts, but just be careful about how you do this. Too long of advertisements at the start of a video have an adverse effect on viewership and reach, not to mention subscriber retention. This one isn't too bad, just trying to add this gentle reminder to bring this to your attention because I really like this channel.
Personally, I believe Astrum handles this well. He just mentions who is sponsoring his videos at the beginning, but then will a short advert at the very end, and usually not do a comment advert, though does write about his Patreon every once in a while. The less intrusive the ads, the better.

I know it's a tiny detail, but I've read this story before and the Norwegians that took the man hostage made sure he was safe from the blast, and also took an extra 2 minutes to help him find his glasses because he lost them lol. Norway is so underrated when it comes to their military. You guys are legends

Love hearing about missions like this. Things that ALTER direction of history if successful. Also loved that the fireteam stayed in the redzone for months hoping someone comes to find them! super cool.
I remember reading about this from a display sign on my Route 66 trip. An elderly Norwegian man named Christian Christiansen (really) moved to Gardner, Illinois and found out about the plant by a newspaper. He used his boyhood recollections to help the Allies find their way to the plant. At least that’s what the sign claimed, the town might have been trying to drum up interest in the area.

There’s an excellent book on Grouse/Freshman/Gunnerside by Damien Lewis. I picked it up after watching The Heroes of Telemark and can confirm that it’s a must read for anybody with an interest in WW2 history.

Just two people. Ronneberg let him and another captive go, and told them to get to a balcony so that they wouldn’t be harmed by the explosion, which they did. I’m unsure of what became of them afterward, though.
They also had a 2 or 3 minute delay in their plan because they literally helped the man (he was older) find his glasses because he lost them lol

This Heroic tale is probadly the most widely known tale from Norways occupation in ww2. Here in Norway we call it "Tungtvannsaksjonen" (crudely translated "heavywater action"

Holy...this story is so incredible, it sounds like a stealth mission straight out of a video game.

Ray Mears' book on this - The Real Heroes of Telemark is a fantastically detailed account of this extraordinary raid
It's only a short video so a lot has been missed out:
The Germans didn't guard the ravine because an ascent assault was thought impossible.
The charges were set with a timer thought too short for the team to escape, to ensure the charges weren't found and disarmed before they went off. The team escaped anyway.
One of the members took shelter in a hotel - which was raided at random by Germans due a rebuff of a general by a Norwegian waitress. The man jumped off a lorry and escaped, dodging bullets and grenades, eventually outpacing the chasing Germans and out smarting (killing) the last and only German who could keep up.
The entire story is astonishing.
Can't enough of your channel and content. It's hands-down the best history focused channel I've found on youtube. Love the fantastic artwork as well - makes for a very immersive and rich experience. You and your brother are hyper-talented! Only complaint is there's not like a hundred more of these videos to watch, haha! Keep up the great work!!

Wow what a story..the courage and ingenuity and daring of those young men....to accomplish such a task and make it away is absolutely amazing.. my grandfather fought for canada in PP light jnfantry.. fought mostly in italy and france.. he was 17 when he went to war. Those were some brave men back then.. i salute them.

This was unbelievable! I had no idea this happened. If this story was a live action movie then i would think it was too unrealistic. Love how some of your videos seem to alter the artstyle a little as needed for the vibe. What really gets me is how young they were, soldiers as young as 18, the leader of an elite squad only 23. Young men like that are hard to come by these days

The german nuclear bomb factory was located in Ohrdruf Thuringina, no heavy water was needed to build the german bomb. Kurt Diebner detonated the first nuclear implosion nuclear bomb on Ohrdruf army testfield at 04.03.1945
No, the Nazis did not have the bomb.
On that 27 October 1944, at 7 p.m., thousands of prisoners in Auschwitz heard a mighty thunder and rumble from the south. Many claim it was a violent explosion twice, and those outside saw a huge reddish glow immediately afterwards, as if flames were leaping into the sky.
Some even thought they saw the fire first, which was probably closer to the truth.
At that time, a Polish prisoner named G. was in Auschwitz.
He came from the village of Czerwonka near Allenstein, which is now called Olsztyn.
He was born in 1913 and had learned the honourable profession of a carpenter.
G. was arrested in May 1941 for illegal activity and sent to the Radom concentration camp.
He was there from 27th of May 1941 until the end of September of the same year and was then transported to Auschwitz.
There he worked as a carpenter in a prisoner construction brigade. .........
During the 27th of October 1944, a detachment of 330 prisoners was hastily assembled.
They were mostly construction workers. G was among them when the detachment marched off at 17:00.
On this march, with their eyes to the south, they saw two flashes of lightning at 19:00, heard a double explosion and at the same moment noticed a huge fire that seemed to rage over a large area at practically the same time. The prisoner brigade marched as if blinded in the direction of this blaze until they were ordered to camp for the night in an open field at 20:00, which meant that they had to sleep in the open on the bare earth, while in the distance the flames were still raging towards the sky.
The other day, 28th of October, around noon, they reached the place where they were to work from now on.
It was an exact square about a kilometre on a side, covered with still burning and smoking rubble. The prisoners, however, smelled not only the burnt wood, but also the sweet stench of burnt human flesh, which they knew well enough.
They marched to the edge of the area where a small town had stood the day before and where, a few hours before, 25 people in protective suits had dared to attempt to penetrate just 200 metres into the burnt and destroyed town. Only to immediately turn back in triumph and horror.
Of course, only a few were triumphant and enthusiastic, others ran silently and hurriedly, and others were so horrified by the horrors they saw that they turned back in shock and vomit.
The 330 prisoners did not wear any protective clothing and were not given any during the weeks in which they had to clear away the stone rubble.
On 3rd of November 1944, 680 Poles and Russians joined them, so that by 15th of December 1944, more than a thousand prisoners had cleared away the stones and burned the remaining bodies and body parts in the radiation-contaminated rubble desert.
By mid-December 1944, all traces had been erased. On 17th of December, the prisoners who had not died due to radioactive dust were sent back to Auschwitz, where all but a few who had managed to hide there were also killed.

Also some of the heavy water did survive and Germans tried to bring it to Germany via train, but at one point the water had to cros a large lake via a passenger ferry, and in the midle of the lake there was an explosion in the ferry and it sang. The explosion was caused by a bomb that some of the commandos who stayed in Norway had butted there

Although the mission was successful against overwhelming odds, in fact it was probably not necessary. Germany was not heavily involved in atomic bomb research. Hitler was wary of the subject, and considered it Jewish science. The heavy water actually destroyed by the Allies was done by a time bomb inside the ship carrying the heavy water.
Of course, the Allies didn't know about how little research was going on in Germany, and had to assume the worst. So this mission was daring, thought to be absolutely necessary and was successful, and your video captured all of that. Keep up the good work. It's refreshing to have a channel that actually does research and works on the videos diligently.
