John F. Kennedy's 1963 Televised Address to the Nation on Civil Rights

  • In his June 11, 1963 speech, President Kennedy responds to the threats of violence and obstruction on the University of Alabama campus following desegregation attempts, explaining that the United States was founded on the principle that all men are created equal and thus, all American students are entitled to attend public educational institutions, regardless of race.
He also discusses how discrimination affects education, public safety, and international relations, noting that the country cannot preach freedom internationally while ignoring it domestically. The President asks Congress to enact legislation protecting all Americans' voting rights, legal standing, educational opportunities, and access to public facilities, but recognizes that legislation alone cannot solve the country's problems concerning race relations.

Unfortunately America has marched more and more to right wing authoritarianism since JFK was assassinated. Wealthy Rich control the Congress and the Supreme Court. The Civil Rights Act of of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 are now gutted by a radical Supreme Court paid for by billionaires. The GOP are supressing Voter Rights, Education Equality, and Health Rights of Women just as a start. Brown vs The Board of Education may be gutted soon as well.

Listening to President Kennedy’s speeches, it strikes me that one of the key differences from his speech and the speech of more recent presidents is the articulation of eternal truths. President Kennedy’s speech does not talk around these truths or avoid mentioning them in favor of more neutral language. His speeches really demonstrated political courage that you see less and less of nowadays.

John F Kennedy was Racist. As Senator, Kennedy fully supported the Racist Southern Democrats in opposing two Civil Rights Bills written by REPUBLICAN Civil Rights Leader Dwight D. Eisenhower, who also gave African American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian minorities in the Military their equal and civil rights in 1942, that would have given All African Americans Equal and Civil Rights in 1957 and again in 1959 - He also refused to let Sammy Davis Jr. perform in the white house and he constantly used N ~ in private. This speech was a testament to JFK's courage and strength of character. Many don't realize that this speech, which was unprecedented by a U.S. president, posed a tremendous risk to his re-election to office. He knew that what he said would alienate a great many Southern delegates who helped him win his first election. But he was willing to assume this risk out of moral conscience. This is why as a Black man I think that JFK was the GOAT of U.S. presidents. I even revere him more than Obama.

Johnson too......All of the southern Democrats told him that it would cost the Democrats the South for a long time.....it took a little longer than they expected, but except for a couple of elections (Carter and Clinton) the South has voted Republican in national elections ever since. This did, however, hand Johnson 96% of the black vote in 64, it has cost the Democrats many elections ever since. I believe, as you and many others probably believe, that it was worth it. To correct such an injustice, is worth a couple of elections. Johnson was able to pass a LOT of bills that helped African Americans (the poor as well). He was the last of the New Deal Democrats. Johnson said several times that FDR was his political hero.

@@noreenhappel8531 terribly wrong on both counts - - - " hope and peace " in 1960 frank Sinatra introduced both Sam Giancana

Informer Judith Campbell was in telephonic contact with
Evelyn Lincoln president Kennedy's secretary on several occasions Campbell was recently seen with johnny Rousselli who was on the list of 40 hoodlums designated to receive intensify investigation.
      Campbell also admitted under

also telling Robert Kennedy that frank Sinatra is tied to the mob you can look at that one of two ways either he's trying to
protect his job. Hoover's trying to
protect his job by telling the
      president's brother " i've got dirt
on your brother " or he's doing a public
service by saying look your brother
is a powerful figure he's hanging out

to back away from frank Sinatra you could
say it was Hoover's finest hour argue

It's surprising, he and his brother were very ideological and "flimsy" if I had to toss some hardball term at them. And that made "The Industry" bold to destroy them both :( Very sad. Very detrimental to us all.

John Kennedy was becoming an unusually effective president at the time of his murder. His loss is all the more tragic as time goes on. Notice that he is calling for people to change their outlook not so much as to pile up heaps of legislation. I had not seen the CBS report that followed. It was unusually insightful. Thank you very much for posting!

If you were to bring back these Pols; and have them view what has happened to the Democrats Party; they would NOT Recognize it. If you could bring back John Kennedy today; as he was; he would be vilified and marginalized by his own Party for being Moderate; and not " Progressive " enough. John Kennedy also believed in the United States Constitution; Gun Rights; Lower Taxes and a Strong National Defense. The people that call themselves Democrats in 2020 America are in Reality Marxist/Globalists. That's a FACT. Please don't let Emotion cloud your Judgment.

Absolutely an amazing speech , a much needed speech, still even needed in today's world 60 years later. The USA has gone to the dumpster since Kennedy was assassinated and strong men like him, Martin Luther King, and his brother Robert Kennedy are sadly looked down on by half of our United States population. There's so much division out there now from people who would rob us of freedom and democracy and equal rights for all racial groups in this land. What we need are more heroes like the Kennedys and Martin Luther King who will be courageous and stand up and speak the truth. Sadly, some of these courageous men get killed for speaking the truth. But anarchy will prevail if good men stay silent and don't speak up.

@@jag5798 There are so many inaccuracies in your comment. You seriously need to re-examine your facts.
JFK 100% voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1957. However he did so begrudgingly because it was a Republican dismantled/poorly crafted version of a better bill that he advocated for and it was his belief if that dismantled bill passed, progress would stalemate.
      www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/85-1957/s75 (check out Massachusetts)
As for why he didn't have any civil rights "legislature" in office (legislation*), is A) He did, you can start with the Civil Rights Act of 1960, B) He was dealing with the USSR at the same time, and C) He had already helped draft CRA of 1964 and was talking about the importance of civil rights at campaign rallies before he was assassinated.
MLK marched to Washington because it was the nation's capital and he knew it would get national attention, which is what was needed for congress to act. He called actions like this "Causing a crisis" and said it was the only thing that would lead to change.
Much of what you said is known conservative fake news that was spread online. Coming from Cold War America, JFK would be terrified of the world we live in today.

In his short tenure I have no doubt whatsoever that he was the President of the highest moral order, of the most pure and righteously oriented courage this country has ever had. The great privilege of his profound dedication to humanity was available to all of the country and world to witness for but a short time. God bless you and your brothers my dear President Kennedy. You did your best at all times to bring out the best in all of us. I am proud to know you were once President. Watching this now encourages me that great men have existed and held high office and someday perhaps will do so again. But none greater than President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. We shall never see the likes of you again. But many of us have been inspired to be better human beings, even those of us who were born after your tragic demise. May your memory be blessing and may you never be forgotten as long human beings live in this world. By the grace of God.

By the way, in addition to some of JFK 's accomplishments include: outlawing discrimination in Federal hiring/contracts, integrating the Coast Guard, the Secret Service- he was the first president to have an African American assigned to a presidential detail (Bolden), he also hand selected an African American to be an astronaut in the NASA space program. Established Lawyers Committee For Civil Rights- original bill that LBJ signed was JFK's bill with a few extras. As for Sammy Davis, he was invited to the White House, but could not be photographed with his wife Mai Britt. Sammy understood it. So don't try to make more of this. JFK needed support for his programs no matter how repulsive he found the Southern Senators beliefs. The programs benefitted everyone, including African Americans. For more info, see: www.jfklibrary.org. By the way, with all your misinformation, the country doesn't need another president like that, but good luck to you anyway. The great thing about our country is that anyone can run as long as you meet the Constitutional requirements.

The Kennedy kids were beautifully educated. Years later, Bobby Kennedy, on his way to give a campaign speech to a mostly black crowd, was surprised with the shocking news that MLK had just been killed, and that the crowd did not yet know about it.
His police escort urged him to cancel, flatly refused to go to the event and peeled off from his motorcade! Imagine that? They were so afraid of a black crowd that they abandoned the candidate for president.
Bobby rapidly scribbled down the framework of an extemporaneous speech in which he gave them his all, and did his utmost to console them, quoting the Greek poet Aeschylus, and identifying his own experience of his brother's assassination with their grief and anger and loss.
Treating the crowd like human beings with bright minds and broken hearts, who deserved the very best he could give them, probably contributed to the fact that it was one of the few cities in the country that did not see riots that night.

They even discussed how they should handle the situation in Alabama. John had no ill intent toward Wallace, he actually told Bobby to make sure the Governor was handled with respect but he also told Bobby if you have to arrest him then do it but the students will be admitted. They put one of the Governor's friends in the Alabama Guard in charge and there was no problems. He respectfully asked the Governor to step aside and allow the students to enter and he did after a brief pause. He was later shot and paralyzed while running for President, 4 years after Bobby and Martin. He had changed his views on Segregation by then.

It's fair to assume that those who orchestrated the cover-up were also complicit in the murder. Lots of credible books about all this which pull the Warren Commission to bits. You can be king of the jungle and defeat the number one contender to your throne but, what you can't do is defeat all of the male lions if they get together and attack you at once. I think when JFK got into the job, he really had no idea how corrupt things were and how certain parties would undermine the presidency. The wall street backed steel crisis was designed to humiliate the president but, he fought and won that. The bay of pigs was a setup, they expected JFK to attempt to cover up mistakes and go for an all-out invasion of Cuba but, again he surprised them by taking the blame himself. He fired Allen Dulles, head of the CIA and others as a result for the way they had lied and deceived him. The Cuban missile crisis resulted in just the president, his brother and I think McNamara being against a first-strike nuclear policy that could have ended the world and a room full of military generals all trying to start the nuclear war were angered by JFK's detente. History has shown he made the right choice as the Soviet missiles in Cuba would have wiped out the south of the USA and god knows what else. The military which intersected with the CIA (ie some generals were CIA like Ed Lansdale and some just Army etc) were furious and saw JFK as weak. You had JFK wanting to cut the oil depletion allowance which benefitted Texas oil men. You had JFK cutting the CIA budget. LBJ was under investigation for corruption and an expose was waiting in the wings. FBI chief Hoover, didn't like JFK or Bobby (understatement) and would routinely turn up with blackmail material showing affairs etc and telling them not to worry, in his way of making a veiled threat. When you start to look at the big picture, plenty had motive and benefitted, though certain government agencies needed to be on board to make it happen (CIA, Military, FBI) and facilitate a cover up.
If you wanted names, Allen Dulles, James Angleton, J Edgar Hoover, David Atlee Phillips, Bill Harvey and a bunch of the Bay of Pigs CIA conscripts are about as good as it gets (what you have to understand is that Mafia guys were on the CIA payroll as they were useful because they still had contacts in Cuba from the pre-revolution casino days, so they could help get at Castro and provide intel). If LBJ didn't know it was going down, he certainly had to help cover it up. Other names that may have been involved are Cord Meyer, Ed Lansdale, Charles Nicoletti, Johnny Rosselli, Frank Sturgis, David Morales, E. Howard Hunt. It's probably there were Corsicans involved, sourced from Marseille too as triggermen.
Anyone can sit and say its conjecture or conspiracy theory but, the HSCA in the 70's ruled it was highly probable that there was a conspiracy and a second gunman as there were more shots than Oswald could have fired on the audio from the day. I don't think Oswald fired anything and certainly not on that antique rifle. Also, the magic bullet theory is the biggest piece of fantasy, the bullet was found in the hospital in some clothes, barely looks fired and there is more metal in governor Connelly than there is lost from the bullet, its such a lie. The more you get into it, the more absurd the Warren Commission becomes.
Anyway, a great guy and the world wishes he lived and had a second term. I think he knew he could go at any time, whether because of his poor health or from an assassin's bullet, he lived each day as if it was his last.
