    So, I just learned that indigenous people in my area would eat 500 live fire ants in a single sitting, multiple times a day to get shamanic powers. Apparently the ants have Kinins in their venom, and one of the papers I read speculates that the are the "active" psychoactive compound. Seems like an extremely dangerous and painful way to get high, which is not my interest, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of kinin nervous system interactions. I just want a better understanding of how the practice of eating a lot of live fire ants to induce shamanic dreams actually works. It was a pretty widespread practice in southern California tribes, so there's got to be something to it. They didn't eat a bunch of live bees or scorpions as a substitute.
