    You guys said I need to keep trying...Ok, let's do this! I am well aware that this machine is not worth the time that I have put into it, except that it is making interesting youtube content and I am learning a lot (which makes it worth it to me.) If it was a strictly financial decision, I would be best just scrapping it or selling it as a parts machine. I hope you learn something watching, or are at least entertained. Have an awesome weekend folks!

    59:19 Keep in mind, when tapping the valves stems and the valves getting better seated, that the valve clearance you set before will get smaller again. Then after a few taps, the valve clearance can be completely gone, so the valves won't go any further to the closed positition, because the camshaft rockers are touching the valve stems preventing fully closed valves. So a recheck of the valve clearance is necessary.
    Also when heating up the intake manifold, the pressurized gas of the Start Pilote (ether) spray can will cool down immediately the intake again, so you add very flamable fuel, but also lower the intake temperature at the same time. A trick you can use is to use a garden spray bottle filled with some gasoline, and instead of using pure diesel fuel coming from the tank, you can temporary use a mixture of diesel fuel mixed with 10 to 15% gasoline for better combustion.
    And last, keep a small sheet of wood or cardboard at hand, in case of a runaway diesel engine. I'm curious how many rpms that engine made at 1:03:14 when hell breaks loose😅

    Not sure if someone already said this but add a quart of ATF in the fuel and run that through the engine. That may help the rings. Cylinder 4 probably has a leaky injector. Good work on this machine. Keep running it. It will get better.

    • @stevemcdonald9050
      @stevemcdonald9050 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes that reminds me of my dad telling me that the railroad mechanics use a teaspoon of Ajax to polish or reseat the rings with the individual cylinder wall. Seems to me that diatomaceous earth is an even finer abrasive to use a small amount and start it up. I still use ATF about 1/2 a quart to 20 gallons to keep injectors clean (maybe once a year). My 05 duramax is purring along beyond 270k though the original injectors 😮

      This was a good idea before Jon pulled the cylinder head and pistons. He found broken rings and pistons. No quick fixes on this project. If he can't find pistons for
      MUCH LESS then the $650.00 each that he was quoted he should part it out. His vast
      number of subscribers should help him find suitably affordable pistons.
      Keith Ruckers followers help him find some very obscure parts for his much older machinery.

    Number 4 might get better once the oil is changed. If it was leaking fuel into the crankcase then the oil is going to be thinner than it should be and that combined with the rings would make me expect excessive smoke. Good work wrestling that thing into submission. I can imagine how satisfying that must have felt.

  • @johnmerryman1825
    @johnmerryman1825 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

    AWESOME!! I think cylinder number 4 is smoking because the injector is leaking/not popping off and spraying correctly. I had a Kubota RTV that had an injector fail and that’s exactly how it behaved. It also sounded awful, like a rod knock. Replaced the injector and it was like new again. Might not be that, but worth a shot

    • @johnmerryman1825

      I agree with this. I would swap #4 with one of the other 3 in order to diagnose bad injector or bad cylinder/rings on #4. I know it’s pretty much a lost cause, but if you run her too long with a leaking injector it will get the piston too hot and cause more damage.

It's victories like this that brings out the maniacal cackling in all of us armchair generals! 😂 Seriously though, I think rebuilding the engine even just cylinder hone and rings with new/knurled valve guides and valve seating) would make for some great content! I mean, how much could cylinder honing, a set of rings and valve guides and gasket set run? Heck, make your own gaskets, green paint optional! 😂

    John that was great!!! You gotta keep going with this thing now! Just like you did with the boom lift and excavator..ect hone the cylinders (if not to worn), throw some rings in it. It’s def worth having around and will make great content!!

    I have to tell you John that I am oddly interested in seeing you really bring this thing back from the dead. I really don’t have a good explanation for why I feel so invested in it. But congratulations on getting it running. I hope to see you putting some hours on this old girl.

    Yeah, definitely one of the most satisfying old diesel "Will It Run?" series I've seen, on ANY TH-cam channel I watch. Definitely the best, most animated reaction I've seen from you - such a rarely-filmed departure from the calmer, dry-wit Jon we've come to know and love! That's the kind of excited I can get over certain things on occasion - it was definitely relatable. 😊😁 This is awesome content!
    On that note, we all need to head over to Jon's merch store and do a little shopping. We know this machine is textbook "Money Pit", but we also know we want to see him eventually put this thing to work, even if not actually _paid_ work. It's not going to be cheap for him, so we need to help him finance this particular project, or he just might not want to do it. Go buy some Farmcraft merch, if you can, and help pay for this project. I'm sure every little sticker sold will help.
    Thanks for this one, Jon. Loved it.

    Well done

    You can put your solvent in a glass jar and place it in the ultrasonic cleaner. The glass is resistant to the solvents and allows the waves to go through and clean the parts.

    • @briancox2721
      @briancox2721 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That can cause the glass to break, so keep an eye on it.

    On a V8 or any V engine, the cylinders do not sit exactly across from each other, there is one side that sits more forward than the other. that will be your number one cylinder.

    • @julianstafford7071
      @julianstafford7071 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not strictly true. For instance the Merlin engine in the P-51 has one set of bifurcated conrods. The cylinders are exactly opposite.
