I think clothing is another big one. You don't NEED Sitka colthes to kill deer.

I agree with you but I’ll play devils advocate here. I’ve never spent a dime on Sitka but all my friends who have say it’s the warmest jackets and bibs they’ve ever owned. Plus it’s goretexed for rain/snow. Warm comfortable clothing = staying on stand longer = kill more deer

I agree but you can’t beat the equinox guard gear. And with Sitka, it does exactly what it says it does. But it is way too expensive. So I kept the guard gear because I can’t stand mosquitoes or ticks.

You know how many people show up every elk season in Sitka Gear and 50 dollar boots? It's a lot. Boots and Pack are the 2 things I will spend big money on.

First time I saw a Hunting Beast video, Dan was lookin sporty in a set of blue Jeans and a bow in a tree stand and I was like “Damn, that’s pretty badass. The Hunting Public and Cat Man rockin Crocs a close second. Just like with motorcycles, it’s 80% the rider and 20% the bike. Hunting’s not far off that mark either.
Ps, the gear room rant is a good look btw. Keep it up!

This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen and it’s an instant subscribe. I’m 25 and I’ve been blowing money on stuff the past few years thinking that I HAD to have it. This year I toned it way down bc I really don’t need it but I was still struggling with the thoughts of buying stuff that I really didn’t need. Finally you put into words what I’ve needed to hear for a while now! Keep up the good work man!

I suffered through a lot of the same BS. Buying senseless stuff just because I thought I needed it. Some things were definitely game changers.. for me, Sitka gear was amazing and installed helped me sit longer and be more silent.. but the majority of the crap I’ve purchased, literally thousands and thousands of dollars worth of gear, was not needed.

Luv the video!!! I’m in the middle when it comes to this topic. Boots, rain gear and optics you really can make a HUGE difference in comfort and performance. Optics is very much a buy once cry once real as a good set of glass literally can last you a lifetime. As far as hunting cloths other then rain gear in my opinion you can get stuff on sale that works as well as the highest priced brands. I use a 35yr old LocOn WindWalker (heavily modified) but old as hell. In it’s original configuration a 5lb stand and modified about 7lbs. This is a $25 yard sale buy and sure a LWCG .5 would be a dream but $500-600 for a stand is bitter pill!!! I do use carbon sticks but that was more bang for my buck and goes with my saddle too. However I have a hunt specific saddle when if your only doin half day sits I would just use a $40-60 arborist saddle or rock climbing harness you can get off Amazon and they work great!!! Truly the best hunter I know has killed many big bucks with a browning wood riser compound with the four wheel system. He hunts from homemade ladder stands made from 2x4x12 lumber from Lowes. He takes 3 weeks in a row off in fall. Two weeks prior to opening day to scout and opening week to hunt and he smashes bucks every year. He hunts in Carhartt overalls and long sleeve cotton tee shirts in all solid colors. Spends his money on hunting in time in the woods not fancy gear.

This right here. Great explanation! LEVI MORGAN, made a TH-cam hunting video, buying, setting up sighting in, and then killing a big buck with a Mathews switchback! It was even a 60 pounder I think they said. That shows latest and greatest isnt 100% neccecary, unless you look at a situation and recognize if I had x product that woulda been ALOT easier. For example, me when I used to drag deer, OUT OF RAVINES, and realized I could do things smarter than that and bought a Kifaru frame pack. Worth its weight in gold! That’s a good way to buy stuff.

I think we all get enticed to buy stuff we don't need.... after i bought my Beast sticks i realized that when it is really cold and i need warm footwear, my Baffin Titan size 11 boots barely even fit on the steps, but since i paid so much for them I'll use them forever.... at least they do stick to the tree better than any sticks i've ever used in my life, so i'm still happy with them.

As far as the tent. If you spike out or hunt out of the backpack every ounce matters but on top of that it’s so helpful to have things that store smaller or more compact to be able to fit more in your backpack. You need space for other stuff still

Great video. It’s easy to get sucked into keeping up with the Jones. I certainly did my first season of “saddle hunting”. I eventually settled on a ground hunting set up and a tree set up and have stuck with it, spending more money on tags and time to travel. It’s paid off much more than “game changing” gear ever did.

Many of the best hunters that I know are using gear that has been passed down from their fathers or maybe even their grandfather. But they still consistently kill every year. I think investing your time and energy and being a better woodsman and learning deer behavior has a lot more yield than the kind of gear that you choose. One caveat, however, is I think it’s worth spending money on good safety equipment like a harness is worth it. My father and grandfather never used any of that stuff!

It’s true! The clothing, stands, bows, and accessories. When is it enough? When it comes to hobbies and u got the money to spend it’s part of the love for hunting. Getting exited about new gear and trying it out. It can actually hurt u in hunting. Gotta learn new setups and what works and doesn’t work for the upgraded equipment.

I love the message you’re sending, but buying gear is a difficult path to navigate. I’m someone who doesn’t put a lot of faith in something I haven’t seen anyone else use, so seeing what “influencers” are using can help narrow down what works. But I also don’t like to buy things solely based on sponsorships & endorsements.

Spot on video. Every year I think I need to upgrade something. Then I remember nope. It still works. Stuff like camo can last a long time if you take care of it. And it’s not needed anyway. I still shot a bow from 2009. Helps I’m a lefty so it’s impossible to find bows to test out. But it’s still a killing machine so I keep using it. It’s all up to you to decide what you want out of hunting.

One thing I can say is I cannot buy cheap clothes from like Walmart because they do not last past a season or two or keep you warm. I buy or build from necessity. I usually buy the cheapest stuff then go from there.
I hate waders. They all leak even the super expensive ones everyone has to have. So I just started to dress warm for duck hunts and used cheap fishing waders. Then I bought a pair from Tidewe a couple years ago because they weren’t so expensive and they still don’t leak(knocking on wood)! So I think Tidewe is a good company.

love the message and I too have been sucked into the trap of things before. but for the most part alot of thought and research is put into what I buy mainly out of necessity. these days if your wanting the newer a better technology the price jump is significant. so here's where you almost have to Rely on influencers to show the product because there's no good ways to get your hands on a product before you use it. with that said you can't be afraid to see what others are saying about the product even if it's against what your favorite people are saying and from there making an educated guess. and yes you can kill alot of deer for cheap. no argument there. but man some of the stuff out there makes it nicer and more efficient and if it's your total passion like myself then it's worth it to a degree to keep up with progression. my best advise is don't be afraid to be a couple years behind. there's people who buy the new every year and sell the old constantly. those second hand products at discount are great.

As a person that has in recent years been buying the “expensive” stuff I will say the best year of my life hunting I didn’t use cover scents I wore Walmart camo with a clearance pse bow out of a hawk saddle I paid a quarter the price of name brand on sale. I’m only buying the “expensive” stuff now because I can afford it. A co worker of mine is buying all the most expensive stuff and hasn’t ever even shot a buck. I even with money still buy hawk sticks only when they are on clearance. My saddle platform is a hawk only on clearnce. Could I go lighter yes. But the cost isn’t worth it to me. If you are gonna spend money do it on what’s most important. Safety and comfort. Your warmth and ability to shoot is more important then the latest bow or climbing sticks

Another thing would be bows. Everybody wants the newest latest greatest bow and then they get it and use it for a year and then when the next one comes out they think they have to have that one. I do think it's good to upgrade a bow when you can but definitely not necessary every year. I've had the same mathews q2 since I was 15 and I'm 34 now and just now upgraded to a new bow this year. I didn't have the money for a new mathews or any high end flagship bow so I went with a Bear Species ev that I found on sale for 350 bucks. I haven't hunted with it yet but I've shot the crap out of it this summer and it shoots great. Heck you don't even need a treestand to kill deer either. You can actually be alot more mobile just hunting off the ground. It is nice to have sometimes but if you can't afford one then don't let it keep you from hunting. You can always save and get it later but it's really not necessary.

My uncle is a stone cold deer slayer. There was a few years he didn't have a car, my mamaw or papaw would drop him off before daylight, and pick him up after dark. I remember when I was a kid, he killed a doe behind our house with a single shot .410, and a slug. He hunted both modern gun, and muzzleloader season with a muzzleloader, to save money. He killed does and smaller bucks, but he also killed alot of studs to. He cut the skull plates off of deer, that alot of us would have paid good money to have mounted. I said that to say this, knowledge and woodsmanship, is key. However comfortable hunting gear is effective, because you can sit longer, and move less but it's not a necessity.

Fishing same way buy all these lures to imitate the bait fish when you could buy a cast net and 1.50 jig heads and use the live bait that out fishes the $20 lure any day!

I think the phase you are looking for is FOMO, or "fear of missing out". One of my favorite parts of all hobbies I have is finding the best product for the price. Not the cheapest, but the best value. It's hard to be honest with yourself about what you realistic actually need. I do this by deciding to buy something, and then I shelve the idea for a few weeks before I finally do it

That's a good way of doing it.

I think handheld releases are a money pit and I'm 100% guilty chasing it. I really hope Ultraview gives Chris Bee a huge commission bonus each year because he has to be the single best release salesman on the planet.

If only we could go back to tell our young selves something is a great theory. However our youngest selves would be to bull headed to listen and would still do the dumbest of things cuz we couldn't see past out pecker's or nose for that matter, witch ever ones shorter. 😂

Whatever you were killing deer with in the 80s & 90s still kills deer just the same as it did back then cause the deer are the same & dont care whatnew gear u have... Just ask yourself do u need it or do u just want it ?

Killing deer isn’t that fucking hard
Invest your money in a good bow and some decent arrows and good G5s and buy yourself an XOP with some hawk sticks and get to work wearing the cheapest camo you can find
What really matters is being where the deer are…but some cheap SD cameras and find em and get in front of em.

I can kill as many big bucks with a $150 pawn shop bow, some arrows, broadheads, an Assault 2 tree stand, some Muddy sticks and my street clothes if I had to. Gadgets can make things safer, more comfortable and more efficient but don't make me a better hunter. Some common safety sense, hunting skill and embracing some lack of comfort can do the same things. Keep in mind, most of the Pope and Young and Boone Crockett bucks were killed with more skill than tech. People will spend hundreds of dollars to shave off 5-7 lbs from a stand and sticks. which makes no difference considering most of these guys take the same weight or more in gadgets. Buyer beware.
