@william weir yes i thought they were the best out the whole lot when they came to paisley every august for 2 weeks. They were called "whites shows" and were so well known all over britain. As they had a huge reputation for having everything and what they didnt have they would get it a year later. Plus they were huge as in the whole fun fair took up the full length of the bottom end of st james park aka the racecourse, thats how many swings and rides and stalls were there. But the dive bombers we went on didnt have the bar that was above there head as you see here as they hold on to it, we just had the bottom bar to hold and hoped for the best lol, when the man put the speed up alot faster then it became a different ride altogether, as me and my mate were freaking out at the speed it was going, ye couldnt hold on we were being thrown up and down it with my mate shouting STOP STOP lol it became scary, but still great. You should try it when its up full speed william, its mental. Then in 1990 we never saw it again any where. Whites just stopped bringing it for the next 5 years, then they couldnt come altogether becouse the land had been bought over, and they had been going there for at least 60 years every year. But great to still see this famous amusement dive bomber is still going. Even todays stuff they put up still doesnt beat the legendery dive bombers and nothing even comes close to it, and nothing will, they were in there own leauge at the shows and every one knew it. The ones that didnt like it was becouse it scared them like nothing else before or since. I really got scared once, me and my mate when the man put the speed up so fast as we didnt know it could go any faster. It was more a suprise than shock. Happy days the best years of my life the 1980s.
So glad 'Carters' still have this classic ride. I am sure it is just as scary to go on now, as it was back in the 80's. I last went on one 1995 or 96. I used to hate the change of direction, especially if you were the ones pointing down.
Every one loved the dive bombers when they came to paisleys st james park at the start of august for 2 weeks. It was the best at the shows imo, there was something dangerous about them, but you couldnt help but love them and they were up a good height as well, at least 40 feet high. Plus i didnt know the man controling them could make them go much faster, he put the speed up one night when me and a friend were on them and we were freaking out, lol ye just thought what if the big chain snapped or what if we just hit the ground? We got a bit scared tbh, as we were only age 10. But very rarely did he put it up to that speed, it was usually on a friday and saturday night, as a think it scared alot of kids and adults. Then about 1990 they just stopped bringing the dive bombers? We didnt know why. But its great to see this classic famous funfair ride again.
@lamby 10 yes i think every one thought they looked a bit dangerous. But when it started you knew you were on a real shows ride, as it did scare you at first and no doubt, it had that great height at least 50 feet high and more then the way it turn as it went round and down to the ground was great, then the best bit for me was when it just stopped in mid air then went backwards, it was intimidating tbh as you dont know whats happening, ye lose all sense of gravity lol going backwards seems faster but its not its just becouse it takes you away from the ground and going up while that old turning still confuses you at every turn plus going down your then facing the sky and dont know whats next as you cant see anything except the sky. A think its brilliant. Even today no matter what they put up and how high it is it just doesnt beat the dive bombers or come close to it. But great to see it here still going!
Love the intro and the quality of your footage! New follower here! Oh wow... ha ha... that was fun! It really felt like I was on the ride when you go into those dive bombs! Looks like a great fair... oh boy.... here we go... backwards! ha ha... I actually think it looked more scary backwards than frontwards!
@disney vacation family yes you got it spot on. Ye knew you were on a real scary ride when you went on the dive bombers, and it was brilliant when it just stopped in mid flight then went backwards, that was maybe the best bit. Especialy if the man controling them put the speed up much faster, wich i didnt know he could, lol that was freaky. You should try it when its up full speed? Its so different and a bit scary when your age 11. My mate wanted it stopped and i was just pml but holding on for dear life, when we went on it, it didnt have the higher bar ye see here as some one holds onto it, we just had to hold the bottom bar and hope for the best lol with a belt as security!
@mrpaulie287 yes mr i can understand that. It can and does really scare alot of people, a believe its the way its made to go up to at least 40 feet high to then turn as your heading fast to the ground in mid air, then going back up the way to do it again, i got a scare the first time it went backwards as i didnt expect that to happen, in mid air it just stopped then in a second it went backwards and it seemend faster? But it was more freaky than forward. It just seems faster backwards becouse of the way it takes you away and up from the ground, then going down but your facing the sky, thats brilliant that bit as your just lost to all gravity lol so i can understand it. Becouse your first time on it you havent a clue whats going to happen and what its like, no matter how many times you watch it to see how it works. So you think well it seems strait forward to me lol and theres something dangerous looking about it, maybe its just becouse how big it is or the old metal cages look as if they will fall apart at any time. But i love it, at night time its great to see the two of them going round from a distance as you walk home and the way they stick out becouse there the biggest there plus all the lights on when its dark, becouse they went to a huge empty park that had 32 football parks on it, so there wasnt much light. "Whites shows" always made alot of money when they came to paisley st james park aka the racecourse. As thats what it used to be for horse racing, so you can imagine the size of the park
Beautiful view at the end when it stops- Carters was such a beautiful fair.
Love these when I was young, they came every year to Bathgate, it would be great if I saw them again

Anyone remember these that had a brake handle you could time the pods to spin completely 😎
I've seen one where the pods don't spin. So they loop the loop. Must be rather like an Enterprise.
Oh yep! We called them the biscuit tins in Falkirk
There’s something spooky but beautiful about the dive bomber 😬
