I appreciate that. For this video, I tried to keep the explanations very simple and straightforward. That said, all of these problems can be solved algebraically, but most people would probably get lost if I did it that way.
This might be a question with a very simple and obvious answer but this is where I am stuck. In the Original Price problem, how did it become 84 = .8x? I can't figure out how 1x - .2x became .8x. It would be really helpful if somebody explained. But this was another great video, I feel more and more confident to retake the ASVAB every time I practice with your videos.
I’m just complimenting you lol I have dyscalculia that’s why but I also want to join the military so I watch all your videos to try and know more and now I do!
Hopefully, my videos help. I try to start my videos with very basic examples in the beginning, and I work up to the harder examples to the end of the video. This is pretty much the case for all of my videos.
You could, but it would be a very inefficient way to solve these problems. The only time I would use the percent change formula is when the problem says "find the percent increase" or "find the percent decrease."
Since a lot of people struggle with decimals, it can be helpful to think about decimals like dollars and cents: One dollar minus ten cents is 90 cents. $1.00 - $.10 = $.90
Just curious for a question like the last one, either the SP = OA - OA(DR) OR Percent change = New price - old price/ old price x 100 works.. Is there a reason to use one over the other or is it just a matter of preference?
For calculating discounts, tax, and tips, it's easier to go with the first method. If a question explicitly asks about percent change, you should go with the percent change formula.
These videos are helpful I would like to see videos that’s gonna b difficult like trying to figure out the how far the plane travels from Louisiana in 12 hours if they left at 6:00 pm. What time will they arrive in the next airport in California ? I would like to get help on these unknown random problems. Lol
Quick question: when I started your video on 'Percent Change' I wanted to do most of it with the method you show in this video. Is there a difference between when you should use the percent change formula vs the 'Original Price' formula found in this video? Thank you! You're video are helping me tremendously to refresh and relearn things that I have forgotten from high school!
To find the Original Price (33:00), could I subtract the Discount Rate from 100%? If it says the Discount is 20%, could I also subtract 20% from 100%? That would give me 80%, which in decimal form converts to .8. Would that method work each time and would also save me a step? I was thinking I could do 100% - DR, then SP/NDR=OP. (NDR is New Discount Rate.)
You could. Since a lot of people struggle with this topic, I decided to only show one method to solve these questions. As I'm sure you can imagine, there are several ways to approach these problems. :)

Hello again , I've been learning alot with your "Study ASVAB List" and I'm almost finishing to take my test . But I have a question . On the topic of original Price, why x - .2x = .8x? I lost it there. Thanks in advance
@@Lokirlehrawhaw you are taking .2 away from 1 ( 1-.2) and you'll get .8. Check your work by adding .8 and .2 ( .8+.2 ) and you will get 1. I used to have problems with fractions and decimals so I would use pizza to help me out. Ex: I have one whole pizza and its cut into 10 slices. Each slice can be thought of as 1/10th of the pizza. If you eat 2 slices, how many are left? 8 are left. You can stop there but to explain it a little more, you have 8/10ths left. If you convert that fraction to 80/100 (cause 100 kind of represents 1) you then know the percentage which is 80%. To make it a decimal you move the dot two places to the left and you get .8. But I think you get it. I hope this helped but if not, I'm sorry if I confused you more.
On the .8 divided by 840; I thought that in the long division that we go for the first number then if it can't divide it that's when we combine the first and the second number. What makes this one different from other long division? Like why do we have to divide 8 by 84 instead of 8 by 8 then 8 by 40? Thanks
@@GrammarHero when I did it, I got 15 instead of 105. 8 goes into 8 is 1 time, 8 minus 8 is zero. Bring down 40, 8 goes into 40 is 5 times then 5 multiply by 8 is 40. 40 minus 40 is zero.
@@Kenny-bp8ux You can only bring down one term at a time, so you made a small mistake with your arithmetic. For additional help, you should watch my video on long division here: th-cam.com/video/T_PqsNiJ1qQ/w-d-xo.html 840 divided by 8 < - I shifted the decimal places, because you can't do long division with a decimal outside the division bracket. 8 / 8 = 1 8 - 8 = 0 Bring down the 4. *******Since 8 doesn't go into 4, you have to place a zero above 4. So now we have 10.******* Bring down the 0. Eight goes in into 40 5 times. So, the answer is 105.
Lol ok so on question 2 in the discounts part of the video I paused the video and I tried to do the problem myself and end up multiplying 500 times 30, (Explanation: I changed 30% into .30 instead of .3) and I still got the answer correct, my answer was 15000 before I moved the decimal back to the left and I got 150.00 which is still $150 right? So then I subtracted 500 from 150 and got 350. Did I do this problem wrong?
Original price can be easier determined: If Peter bought that after 20% discount it means he bought watch for 80% of original price(100%-20%=80%). So we can determine mean of 1% original price(84:80, if its hard for you, check Grammar hero guides about dividing).We got 1,05=1%, so 20%=21, Add this value(21) to price after discount and you will get original price Here solve in math language: 100%-20%=80% - selling price of original 84:80=1,05 - 1% of original price 20 • 1,05=21 - 20% of original price 84+21=105 - $ original

Jorge has spent $789.37 at the home improvement store. A storewide sale offers an 11% rebate on everything in the store. If he paid a 6% sales tax, how much rebate should he get? How do you solve this problem
Where is this question from, if you don't mind me asking? Here is the solution: www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/word/finance/Money_Word_Problems.faq.question.1173189.html I don't think rebate questions will show up on the ASVAB, since rebates are not necessarily common knowledge. Sales tax and discounts are common knowledge; rebates are not.

IS that a TH-cam Channel , Is that a bird , Is that a math teacher?!?! No, It is the GRAMMER HERO :)))))) thank yoooouu but i did not get it why would you put 8=.8x also the .9 in the last question?
So the formula for the original price is: Sales Price = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discounted) For question 2 you are given the $450 for the Sales Price. 450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discount Rate) Next you were given the discount which in this case was 10%. 450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (.10 [convert percent to decimal by moving it two places to the left]) Now we will substitute "Original Amount" with a variable to account for the unknown. 450 = X - X (.10) Next you clean it up. 450 = X - .1X. In front of a variable is always a "1" so it will become. 450 = 1x - .1x. You subtract like terms and get .9. 450 = .9x Then you divided both sides by .9 450/.9 = .9/.9x 500 = x
You can use the percent change formula. th-cam.com/video/3ym96HabK6U/w-d-xo.html Either way, finding the original price isn't suppose to be super easy; it does require some critical thinking.

On the .8 divided by 840; I thought that in the long division that we go for the first number then if it can't divide it that's when we combine the first and the second number. What makes this one different from other long division? Like why do we have to divide 8 by 84 instead of 8 by 8 then 8 by 40? Thanks
You can do it either way. If you do it the way I did in the video, there are fewer steps.
For additional help, you should watch my video on long division here: th-cam.com/video/T_PqsNiJ1qQ/w-d-xo.html
840 divided by 8 < - I shifted the decimal places, because you can't do long division with a decimal outside the division bracket.
8 / 8 = 1
8 - 8 = 0
Bring down the 4.
*******Since 8 doesn't go into 4, you have to place a zero above 4. So now we have 10.*******
Bring down the 0. Eight goes in into 40 5 times.
So, the answer is 105.

Thank you so much for your help!
You did it pretty much the same way I did it in my video.
$350 is correct final answer.
.3 and .30 are the same.
150.00 and $150 are the same.
thank you!!!
You're welcome, and good luck!

@@GrammarHero thank you I read that completely wrong
Original price can be easier determined:
If Peter bought that after 20% discount it means he bought watch for 80% of original price(100%-20%=80%). So we can determine mean of 1% original price(84:80, if its hard for you, check Grammar hero guides about dividing).We got 1,05=1%, so 20%=21,
Add this value(21) to price after discount and you will get original price
Here solve in math language:
100%-20%=80% - selling price of original
84:80=1,05 - 1% of original price
20 • 1,05=21 - 20% of original price
84+21=105 - $ original
Pretty much all of these questions can be solved much more quickly if you're decent at math!
Any tips how to be successful on the ASVAB? mine is coming up in 2 weeks.
I responded with advice in other comments. Good luck!
hello grammar hero i wanted to ask if it would matter if the OA and DR were switched because on the second to the last problem the formula i wrote to study was SP=OA-OA(DR) and in the last problem it was SP=OA-DR times OA.
I t doesn't matter if you switch them, since they will multiply to the same value.
everyone that's here you get this don't give up

Are you able to make videos on Verbal Expression?
Verbal Expression is a combination of your Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge scores. Right now, I have 53 WK videos on my channel, and as for PC, I'd recommend you start reading your local newspaper as much as possible to improve that score.
Do you have any general science videos?
Unfortunately, I don't, and sorry for the late reply. Sometimes, I don't get notified for every new comment. Just do your best on that section, and you'll be fine.

Jorge has spent $789.37 at the home improvement store. A storewide sale offers an 11% rebate on everything in the store. If he paid a 6% sales tax, how much rebate should he get? How do you solve this problem
Where is this question from, if you don't mind me asking?
Here is the solution: www.algebra.com/algebra/homework/word/finance/Money_Word_Problems.faq.question.1173189.html
I don't think rebate questions will show up on the ASVAB, since rebates are not necessarily common knowledge.
Sales tax and discounts are common knowledge; rebates are not.

Hey i don’t really understand the original price any can give me tips??
So the formula for the original price is:
Sales Price = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discounted)
For question 2 you are given the $450 for the Sales Price.
450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (Discount Rate)
Next you were given the discount which in this case was 10%.
450 = Original Amount - Original Amount (.10 [convert percent to decimal by moving it two places to the left])
Now we will substitute "Original Amount" with a variable to account for the unknown.
450 = X - X (.10)
Next you clean it up.
450 = X - .1X.
In front of a variable is always a "1" so it will become.
450 = 1x - .1x.
You subtract like terms and get .9.
450 = .9x
Then you divided both sides by .9
450/.9 = .9/.9x
500 = x
