Reading the book makes this movie feel kind of short but truly makes you *feel* Anna, it’s such a good book. It’s only 500 pages too.

Anna is a girl who has closed herself off from love due to a misunderstanding of a relationship loss. Seeing her solve the mystery and beginning to allow love into her life is so beautiful. I wish every child with these struggles could resolve them as well as Anna does through her friendship with Marnie.

this was such a beautiful way to look at this film :,) im so glad you were able to watch it and love it too!! When Marnie was There is honestly one of the most wholesome films I’ve ever watched; it’s taught me so much about friendships and connections we can make with others, even if we seem to be in a dark place at that current moment. I absolutely loved your interpretation of Anna’s personality and how she naturally navigates the world. Also, I’ve never heard of the Kazuhiko theory and it does make so much sense now that i think of it!
I love every single one of your film analysis and I’m so glad to have found your channel :”) I honestly have no idea how you don’t have so much more subscribers by now, you’re truly amazing!!!! 🌸🤍

Though it may not have been a romance, it certainly had some potential queer imagery that could have happened had Marnie not been her ancestor

Thank you for making such an intelligent summarization of the story. I recently started my journey watching through the studio ghibli films, and this movie has been my absolute favorite thus far. It was so emotionally impactful to me, and to see not a lot of content or people talking about it really shocked me. Thank you for your well spoken perspectives. You are an emotionally intelligent person well beyond your years. Keep making videos

Wonderful analysis! It is my favorite Ghibli movie! I happen to think that the LGBTQ overtones are truly there and Anna was experiencing this in her dreams. I believe the relationship was between Marnie and Hisako! The more I watch the movie, the more I’m convinced of this!

i understand both sides who think its queer and who think its just platonic,
There was definitely suggestions that they had a crush on each other, but even after being vulnerable with each other they dont pursue romance with each other and also its her grandma, after knowing that its not initiating that anna has the same kind of crush feelings finding that out,so after that reveal if anna doesn't suggest having that kind of feelings ,After that if you still think theyre queer than its the audiance's mind and fault.
maybe the creators queerbated us or maybe we 're not understanding the full complexity of their emotions.
Having an opinion that their love for each other is not queer doesnt make it homophobic, because its a fact they DONT have romantic feelings for each other in the end.
Coming from someone who very much relates to both Anna and Marnie, who is also pan.(not that it exactly matters)

Thanks for the essay! This is one of my favourite movies of all time. I've read the book a couple of times as well. I like that neither the book nor the movie really explain what's going on. It's fundamentally an emotional story where no logic fully works. My own take (but it might work better for the book than the movie) is not that Marnie is a ghost. Instead, Anna travels back in time to Marnie's world, but only around the house. Marnie doesn't come to Anna's world; Anna goes to Marnie's. When Anna is with Marnie, she loses memories of her/our world. The Kazuhiko/Anna connections are more about overlapping timelines than reincarnated spirits. I've also heard the theory that everything with Marnie is Anna's memories or imaginings. Ultimately all three answers - time travel, ghost, memoryscapes - partially work and partially don't, and I think that's okay. I also don't mind the confusion between familial and romantic love; it can be both because the movie's world is not logically consistent -- by design.

WMWT is one of my absolute favourite movies ever and I do cry everything haha. I had a very similar experience with being shipped off to live with my grandma every summer in her cottage home because my mum didn't want to deal with my Seasonal Affective Disorder. I totally relate to this movie.
My personal theory is that Marnie appeared as a teenager because that's when she was the most traumatised due to her developing brain. She came back as a ghost/spirit because her soul knew her work wasn't done.

I don't know if it's just with me, but at no point while watching it for the first 2 times I thought about there being a romance between Anna and Marnie. For me, it was clearly just 2 kids developing a friendship, that's all. Nothing in this movie made me think about LGBTQIA+. It was only after I saw some comments on the internet about it that made me realize that some people might think that way. But if you think that, it's all in your head, the movie has nothing to do with any of that stuff.

As a queer person, Anna is very queer coded. Anna questions her place in life, her identity and why she doesn’t fit in. This very much matches the queer experience. Also, Marnie literally tells Anna that she’s her little secret, it’s a classic forbidden romance.

I went into the movie not knowing anything about it. I didn't get any sexual vibes. I had an inkling it was a ghost of her past which is why the "physical" touches between the characters were depicted as strange and maybe a bit uncomfortable. I didn't sense any sexual tension.

I’m sorry, I hated this movie due to the complete trash writing. I couldn’t get past 35 - 45 minutes. I don’t care if the ending is emotionally amazing and if there is a deep meaning …. As soon as a story is illogical and it doesn’t make sense, I completely lose interest.
I didn’t like the character at all, but I pushed forward, but what ruined it for me completely was when she couldn’t befriend anyone at all in two different cities, but as soon as a blonde girl shows up “oh I trust you bro”
Whether the blonde girl and Anna share experiences or have similar life’s is completely irrelevant, because Anna trusted the girl STRAIGHT AWAY WITHOUT REASON AT ALL!! Even though everyone else was being nice to her.
Why didn’t they write it in a way where Anna doesn’t like the blonde girl straight away and then slowly build it up? That would have made more sense 🤦‍♂️ I already disliked the character but then ….. that was the end for me

'When Marnie was there' is one of my comfort movie because I relate to both Anna and Marnie alot,
So as a real life person who went through and felt alot like both Anna and Marnie maybe my perspective will give you a different picture of the story,
There was a time in my life when I was as disconnected and angsty as Anna was in the beginning and my environment was changed from moving houses just like a few times before,
Even though I had no connection to anyone in my family or people from past environment, with a heavily built emotional armour from other people,
I went to a new Sunday school reluctantly and was randomly approached by a very bright girl, who seemed a little dumb as all her action and words seemed to have no other meaning than face value, she asked for my name and suddenly I became friends with her,
Firstly it's because 1.Shes a different person, with a different personality and vibe from other people in my life.
2.She was my age and she always seem to mean what she says and do
And as we somehow spent time together we ended up talking about our life and struggles,it just happened even though it's not like I've ever connected with someone before.
So,for 1.Its not about people being nice to her, because nice doesn't mean create connection
2.Anna wasn't necessarily someone with prominent trust issues, but never connected with someone, who understands her and who she learns to understand.Meaning she DOES want to connect.
4.You might be trying to understand the movie and characters with your logic and experiences making you have certain expectations of how someone like Anna would act.
I've also definitely had shows and animes where the storyline and character writing made no sense at all, even after years and different experiences but I think this one is something you might be able to understand.
I hope you can watch it again without any expectations for the characters and take it as learning about new characters, even if you end up personally liking the characters, story, movie or not
