    I love the sedgehog patterns that you tie, and I have found that there are several insects in my local rivers and lakes that can equally be represented by presenting a well cast and tied sedgehog. A great pattern, tyed by a fantastic artist with feather fur and thread, and a fly that I can say myself has educated me and shown me a new technique, idea, or shortcut a time or three

    Brilliant tie I learn so much from your videos even if I don't tie or use some of your patterns I watch every single video knowing I will learn something I can take and use in my own patterns pure genius

    Beautiful tie Davie. Thanks for explaining the difference between the hogs - Sedge / Hedge. The Sedgehog reminds me of the longer Mikulak Sedge pattern from Canada. The Bibio body seems tailor made for tying the multiple Sedge / Hedge hog wings. Thanks, your tutorials always help in understanding the art of fly tying.

    Great fly Davie. I noticed that when you started tying in each bunch of deer hair that you pressed quite hard with your index finger on your left hand , why is that please? Cheers, English Dave.

    With the hackle & almost continuous deer hair wing, this fly looks extremely buoyant. In addition to being good for a windy lake, I’ll bet it would be great for a turbulent river on a windy day (common on my home river in Maine, US), especially during a black caddis hatch. I’m curious about the name. Was it originally tied with hedgehog/woodchuck fur or was it the amount of winging material that caused the “hog” to be added to the name?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi FlyTyer1948,
      It got it's name after the Hedgehog which is a small spiny mammal which can be found all over the UK, it's shape and colour of the wing of this fly looks like a little Hedgehog so this is how it got it's name...The Sedgehog is a variant of the original Hedgehog as this one has a hackle and the original didn't have one is t's as simple as this..It may be worth tying a Woodchuck version...I have attached a link to the real Hedgehog that runs around many of our gardens here in Scotland which I see regularly in our garden, they mainly eat slugs and worms that appear at night when they are feeding..

      @@DavieMcPhail Thank you. I see the resemblance from the link. My guess was very poor. An amusing & appropriate name. :-)

    Nice tie, could you tie a klink Hamer with a tippet ring on its back for a dropper? I don't know how to fix the tippet ring.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Herwig Van Hellemont,
      I have to be honest I have never tyed one as all I do it tye straight onto the bend of the hook, I'll have to see if I can get some rings as I've none at the moment, just keep me in mind and I'm glad you liked the fly..

    Good morning David,
    Thank you for thuis tutorial!
    Two questions:
    1) what hook do you suggest? (The list "matrials" doesn't mention it)
    2) for what periode of the season woud you recomand this fly ?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Greg,
      I forgot to list the hooks sorry, though it's a great question. Over the years I have used many styles of hooks to tye these flies on, one of my favourites was a grub shaped hook like the Kamazan B110 and the Fulling Mill Super Grub which gave the fly a lovely shape and it sits well on the water. The Fulling Mill Short Shank Special, the standard All-Purpose Medium and the Competition Heavyweight by Fulling Mill or if you like the Kamazan versions B160, B170 and the B175 are all good hooks for this pattern as well..I'm glad you enjoyed the video..

      Hi David,
      If you speak to the Ghillie he will know the best flies and sizes to suit but If I had to recommend a couple of flies or so then I would take along some Willie Gunns, Parks Shrimp, Ally's, Cascades and a Dee Monkey or something similar tyed on a tube or a hook of your choice..Good luck and I hope you have a good trip...
