If you love bass a Jazz or Precision is a good investment that will take you to intermediate or even pro level. I say start with an Ibanez around $300 (definitely 4 strings), then see where it takes you. Seeing is believing, so I share Girmay's advice: try before buying. As always ONLY practice is the key to be successful at whatever you do, even playing bass guitar! Peace!
