      I am going to build a larger one for my dump truck very soon. The way I installed it on the bulldozer was to help with preference. Make it where you can change the direction as if you install it the other way, it will be less noisy but the engine may lose some preference. Good luck with your compressor build. Thank you for watching and for the comment.

    very well done, great welds and everything, this may work nice as a performance exhaust on my boat, even without the fiber glass I am sure its quieter.

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  ปีที่แล้ว

      In the old days, guys with sport cars, used to remove the fiber glass to get deeper and loader sound.this design is for performance and not for reducing the sound. If you install it the opposite direction with fiber glass, you will get sound reduction at the cost of performance. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment.

    Look into how Flowmaster makes their baffles which they call the Delta flow technology ! I made a home made muffler for my old Jiffy gas powered ice auger for ice fishing which uses a 2 stroke Techumse engine & they only come with a small steel plate with a slot cut through them as a muffler which isn't very quiet at all ! I basically took this plate then used a 6 inch piece of 2 inch pipe with the ends cut off & drilled the holes needed for the plate to breath through then welded those 2 together & added sections of steel V cut up like the Flow Master design with the smallest first then making them wider at the end then an exhaust hole at the end & bottom after I welded ends on each end . Once done I was able to just bolt it on then started it up & it's much quieter but had to tune the carburetor settings for low & high speed mix & it works great lol . The way they are stock from the factory is like a open pipe so they are loud as heck compared to the new ice augers especially the 4 strokes out now but now it's much quieter & didn't cost me anything for materials because I had that & just the time to make it & some electricity & welding wire for the welder . I was on here watching other various ways to make exhaust baffles for a chrome Harley Davidson pipe I put on my 17.5 Sears OHV lawn tractor mower because the stock muffler after 20 plus years finally rusted out so I made this pipe work but need to make a baffle for it now to quiet it down more & ran across your video so I think I will probably go this route on making a baffle but use some stainless steel wool to pack into it as well to tame it down even more ! Great job on making this & the video !

      Hello Pete, thank you for the nice and informative comment, I built a muffler in the past very similar to the “delta flow”. I installed it on Suzuki samurai, I am planning to post a series of videos regarding home made mufflers that are easy and cheap to make. Mufflers are cheap these days, however, sometimes you have to custom make them for specific application just like you did when you build your own. Thank for the comment and have a great day.

    That is some quality metal work. The cutting, punching, and welding are clean and smooth. Nice job. How many hours would you estimate this took? How many hours would it take someone who does not have your skill level? Have you tried phone apps or a sound meter to measure the sound differences?

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hello Thomas, Thank you for the nice comment. It took me about 2 hours to manufacture the muffler (filming it made it a little longer), I would say, if you know how to weld, how to use the grinder, and you have all the material, then it should be about two hours. I am planning to purchase a sound meter and I am going to post videos in the near future about how to build several type of muffler for different types of engines in detail as there is a high interest in the TH-cam community about home made mufflers. Please note: Glass Pack mufflers are efficient, make the most power out of your engine, and easy to make, however, they do not provide good muffling, especially if you are trying to muffle an engine like a generator near your house. Hope this helped.

  • @ZedJ2xU
    @ZedJ2xU 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is a great video, but based on learning about exhaust engineering if performance is a requirement then you would want a design where the slotted indentations bend outward instead of inward, thus preserving the pipe diameter flow. At lower rpm it will absorb greater, at higher rpm it will create air cushions that will allow less resistance and better flow through than even a straight pipe.
    How? I would cut the pipe in half lengthwise and punch out the slots from the inside. Then weld or clamp back together.

    Bass frequencies carry a lot of energy and travel further. Sound system engineers and musicians know this well. If the bass sound is converted into treble frequencies, this could sound louder up close, but dissipate the sound with distance.
    Any thought about this when developing a muffler?

    Can the fiberglass cotton material be substituted with fiberglass mesh covering a thick layer of rock-wool?

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, There are three type of material they use for the glass pack, fiberglass, stainless steel wool and ceramic. The packing material must be high heat resistant. Fiberglass is the cheapest and when new it work the best, stainless is the less effective in sound reduction but it will work for longer time than the other packing material. Don't use steel wool or anything is not rated for muffler packing.
      They sale the muffler packing material online, for 2 stroke and for 4 stoke engine. I hope this answer your question.

      اما إذا من كل تيربو المواسير متصلين ببعض. فيجب أن تكون الماسورة اربع انجات ونصف او خمس انجات. ويجب أن تصمم العادم لهذا القياس.
      هذا النوع من العادمات هو مصمم لتحسين كفائة المحرك. الصوت راح يقل بنسبة ضئيلة. إذا تريد تحفف الصوت يجب أن تصنع عادم من نوع اخر. في المستقبل القريب راح أصنع عادم لمولد كهربائي العرض منه تخفيف الصوت. شكرا عالمتابعة.

    Nicely done, only one problem, you have the airflow going through the pipe the wrong way, try it the other way and you will see a big difference. What i once did was a compromise that worked well, the first half with the cutouts going one way and the second half with the cutouts going the other way.

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hello, I built one just like the one in the video back in the 90s and installed it on a my car. I tried it both ways. One direction was quieter but the engine was loaded or there was more back pressure the engine was getting warmer when driving up hill. The other direction was louder but the engine was running better and cooler. On tractors and off road vehicles the glass pack should be installed as I demonstrated. Road going vehicles have to meet certain noise level restrictions and therefore they install the glass pack to meet those standards. This creates more back pressure and little bit loss of performance. There are other options of using holes on the pipe which will give you in the middle results. I am going to upload videos in the future about homemade mufflers and I am going to test everything for the viewers. Thank you for the comment and thank you for watching.

    I have a question.
    You turned it I guess upside down.
    The exhaust flow does not go into the opening which you hammered.
    Yet it does silence the sound so much?
    I have glasspacks currently on that do not too much for me.
    I got the opening facing the engine so the exhaust flow is caught and forced into the fiberglass.
    Am i doing it wrong?

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, by design (for sound reduction), you installed it correctly, the way you installed it (if the muffler you installed was built for your size engine with good quality packing material) it should give the best results as far as sound reduction. I built one just like the one in the video back in the 90s and installed it on a my car. I tried it both ways. One direction was quieter but the engine was loaded or there was more back pressure the engine was getting warmer when driving up hill. The other direction (like how I installed it in this video) was louder but the engine was running better and cooler. I am going to upload videos in the future about homemade mufflers and I am going to test everything for the viewers. Thank you for the comment and thank you for watching.

      Nice ford engine. I had a chevy malibu model 1978. I installed two homemade glass pack (one on each side). I believe I used 2" pipe (it has been a long time ago) I didn't use any packing material in the glass pack and it sounded great (sporty). The only negative thing was when coming down hill, the engine breaking was too much. When I sold it, it went quickly because of the sound. I remember the guy who bought it said so :)

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glasswool reduces noise better, stainless steel wool lasts longer. Don't use steel wool. The idea of a glass pack is for performance or if you want to get the sport car sound (make sure it is legal in your area). You can use glasswool, stainless steel wool or no material to get different sound/performance. I only use it for off-road vehicles. Thank you for watching

      To reduce the noise, you must make the muffler larger in length and point the cuts in the internal pipe to the exhaust of the generator (opposite of what I did in the video). Make sure the internal pipe size is the same as the generator original exhaust to minimize heat while you get sound reduction. You may also have to build a large box to contain the generator and cover the inside of the box with fiberglass to help reduce the other noises that are generated by the generator.

    I really like the design, with the slit cut then punch. If I do it, I’ll reverse the flow so it’s directed towards the fiber glass packing. I feel like it would be quieter.

    • @SalamSayhood
      @SalamSayhood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good morning, you are right, I tried that in the past. The way I installed it, the engine performance is better and louder. If installed like you mentioned, the engine will be quieter. I am planning to do this experiment in the future and will show it on TH-cam. Thank you for watching and for the comment. Have a great day.

      At the end of the video I showed the straight pipe sound against this glass pack muffler. In the future (I have few projects to finish first 😆) I am going to experiment with more muffler designs, I bought a sound level meter to be able to show the results. The camera captures good sound, however the sound meter will give more accurate information. When it comes to mufflers, the goal isn't for sound reduction but also for engine performance. I will also be checking for that and for heat. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment.

      Thank you for the comment. The glass pack always cause debate on which direction it should be installed. I experimented with it in the past and this should explain it:
      If you install it in the direction I showed: the glass pack will last longer, you have less back pressure, engine run cooler and louder.
      If you install it the other way: the glass pack packing material will degrade faster, you will have more back pressure, the engine will warm up faster and it will be quieter.
      If you use a drilled pipe in the center instead of what I made: you will be in the middle of the above two options.
      I hope this was helpful.
