- In 2000, Chris Morris performed a guest DJ slot on the late-night radio show Breezeblock fronted by Mary-Ann Hobbs, which had often preceded broadcasts of "Blue Jam". His choice of tracks was a rockier and faster-paced selection than the usual "Blue Jam" selections, sprinkled with mystery speech samples, and incorporating previously unheard interviews with Michael Moore and novelist Brett Easton-Ellis.

Essentially this interview is Chris sarcastically asking, "you're a really important person, aren't you?" And Ellis going "yeah, I think that's probably correct. I am really important."

Such a great line went so unappreciated
Two of my favorite things, Morris and American Psycho, but was surprised that Morris was trolling a similar kinda comedy.
Chris is a treat to watch in press conferences. Reporters still think they can outsmart him, as if they're even close to his wavelength. He turned owning morons into an artform during the early '90s. Great to see he still dusts off the mocking hat and puts it on every now and then. :-)
B.E.E Came across brilliantly in this interview I thought. He seemed to "get" Chris Morris' character.Then again, he's used to dealing with "egocentric units run riot"
I love them both, I don't think Chris gets much over Bret here.
@Pepotamo1985 I'm not sure that's quite fair. I think most of the people from Brass Eye were ridiculous because they were prepared to spout rubbish without checking up on it - by contrast Ellis seems to go quiet when a question is put that is meaningless or invites an idiotic answer. Yes, his expectation of a more normal interview leads him to speak some nonsense, but I get the sense that he has more of a 'bulls*** compass' than most of the Brass Eye lampoonees, who I'm not sure really did care.

Well honestly when I read it at 16 I thought it was good too. But the more books I read and the more I retrospectively learned about Psycho and Ellis, I came to realize that what I was excited about originally was the taboo and hype surrounding the book. The only depth Psycho has is that artificially inserted into it by readers, not from any inherent quality. Ellis has claimed so himself, that it was more of a diary than a satire, and the satire thing was a convenient deflection for criticism
Yeah I read it when I was 18 and thought the same. I'd probs still get a kick out of it now as well. But the writer is seemingy unimpressive.

i like bret's books, but I think Morris is bitter about how satire is often done at crude childish extremes which, despite a lovely verbose writing style, his books are kind of gratuitously offensive to get attention...bret is as guilty of that as anyone. And of course Chris has toyed with it here and there himself.

@satanidomini Don't you think it would be a bit pointless to manipulate an interview with a semi-famous author, sourcing audio that no one has ever heard? Given who Morris generally targets, and what his motives usually are, how would that make any sense? What would the joke be in that case?

This reminds me of the Jas Mann interview. Ellis, like Jas Mann, seems utterly clueless here.

I think it showcases a difference between performers and writers and British and American culture. I don't know about the character of Ellis but in many cases writers can be inward absorbing and reflecting on society thus not quick at retorts or response.And with regard to culture in the states it is drummed into you to be positive and upbeat whereas in Britain, self-effacement is expected. So even though funny as it was, I got the feeling of knowing(smug) teacher and child seeking acceptance...Also Chris was so speedy in his delivery on the phone and maybe Bret politely went along with it to be social not really catching everything.
It's kinda perfect for me. But, I hear what you're saying.

No - this doesn't work
Ellis, to a less successful degree, does a bit of what Morris is doing to him at this moment. It's not an even match but Ellis's response delay comes from trying to work out how to combat the craziness being thrown at him. As opposed to saying " Are you having me on?" and sounding a million years old. I enjoy him being interviewed because he does love himself so very much and doesn't disguise this.
Kind of a shame Morris didn't either a) let Ellis know it was a piss-take from the beginning so that they could have some fun with the idea, or b) construct it in such a way that Ellis would end up embarrassing himself (as with other victims of Morris's interviews). In the end Ellis goes quiet since he thinks Morris is an idiot, and neither of them come out of it particularly well. It feels like a wasted opportunity since they're both very funny writers - and I imagine Ellis was just expecting a regular interview and was probably right in the middle of the Glamorama book tour, therefore not expecting to have to change gears from explaining his work to sending himself up (which he would probably have been up for).
I suspect Ellis had figured it out by then (or at least had realized that something was going on), but had he been aware that Morris was playing a joke from the beginning it could have been funnier and less stilted.

Yes, I agree, but my point was that Ellis doesn't seem aware that it's a joke until fairly late on, and since Morris is firing off these random phrases and non sequiturs, he just gets confused. Had they both been in on the joke it would have been a funnier and less awkward interview. As it is, the whole thing falls pretty flat. It's a bit of a moot point anyway, since Morris doesn't tend to let his guests know anything in advance, which in the case of someone like Ellis is kind of a shame.

also, check out bret easton ellis' interviews with people on his podcasts. he's a great listener, especially his interviews with kanye west where he paraphrases kernye's garbled english into properly formed ideas.
as for the chapters thing, it's a valid question. have you read Will Self's latest book? it doesn't even have paragraphs.
Nice idea, but it somewhat imploded upon itself by around the seventh word. Go away, have another idea, come back and try again. Then, having said which, you probably wrote the idea down some years ago, so you've probably moved on, or maybe even have perished since you commented originally, but as I say, nice try, though failed on this occasion.
