    Finally someone who gives an accurate description as to why the .375 H&H and its derivative cartridges use a belt and tapered cases. I have had so many discussions with people that think that it is to keep the cases from splitting etc. only to be completely dumbfounded when I tell them that the purpose of the belt is to headspace because the original .375 H&H didn't have enough shoulder to reliably headspace so the engineers added the belt.

    As a hobbyist, I built a 375 Ruger on a stainless Tikka T3X, Pure Precision stock, and 20 inch threaded Preferred Barrel Blanks, prefit carbon wrapped barrel. 3 rounds in the standard mag, and it feeds like butter!

    Great and informative video! I won a bid on a NIB M77 Hawkeye African LH 375 Ruger on gunbroker for $700. Before shooting it I sent it off for full glass bedding, 1” red “Decelerator” recoil pad fitted and had the factory stock clear coat removed and hand oil finish applied. After 100 bolt cyclings the bolt is the smoothest I have seen on a m77. Trigger breaks at a no creep 3 pounds. Mounted a cheep scope to test accuracy and it drove the new hornady 250 grain CX into .5 moa regularly. Opens sighs point extremely naturally as well. With a little work and money these can made into quite the rifle. I am very thankful Ruger provides this to Left hand shooters.
    One problem is for in the 2 years I have had my 375 Ruger brass is still completely unavailable. This seems like it might be holding the cartridge back from further popularity. Not sure why other ammo manufacturers have not yielded to this market demand?

    An affordable option in the used 375 H&H market is Whitworth/Interarms. Certainly nowhere near the pedigree of Rigby, Holland and Holland, or Parkwest, but they're reliable and accurate and won't break the bank. You have to have *some* money to get into this part of the hunting world, but if you're budget conscious like I am, then Whitworth/Interarms is a very good option.
    Mossberg Patriot in 375 Ruger is just a non-starter - Mossberg's website lists that rifle at under 7 lbs. When we're talking about the sort of recoil that's generated with a 300 gr bullet at 2500 fps, I'd consider 8.5 - 9 lbs to be the bare minimum.
    One critical feature of taming recoil is rifle fit. If the Length of Pull is too short, if the comb sits too low, the rifle is just going to beat the crap out of you when you shoot it. Most of the US-made rifles have a standard LOP of around 13.5 or 13.75". Fortunately, LOP and comb height are easily remedied for not a lot of money. But if you're tall and just used to making do with off-the-rack deer rifles made by Ruger, Remington, Winchester, Savage, etc., well, you could get away with a poor fit. In the world of cartridges suitable for dangerous game, that won't work for you anymore.
    I agree with JVB on all but one point, though. 375 Ruger brass is just unobtanium right now, and has been for a while. Neither wikiarms nor ammoseek show any available anywhere. I was in the market for a LH 375 recently and brass availability ended up being the deciding factor for me - GB currently shows 40+ LH Hawkeyes for sale and I REALLY wanted one, but I ended up going with a Ruger #1. Virgin 375 H&H brass is available everywhere. Lots of companies manufacture H&H brass - Ruger, Norma, Nosler, PPU, and Remington just to name a few. Only Ruger as far as I am aware makes 375 Ruger brass, and they just don't seem to be churning out very much of it.

    Sir I found your discussion of these two calibers interesting and in general, quite fair I have owned both and think they’re both great. That said I certainly do not agree with your suggestion that because of the taper on the H&H you might be able to hold one more round in the H&H than in the Ruger. This simply isn’t the case. While the H&H cartridge certainly has more taper and theoretically should feed smoother - more on that later, the simple fact of the matter is that the diameter of the base of the Ruger is 0.532 inches and the diameter of the belt on the H&H is also.532. The taper of the case doesn’t change the diameter of the belt which remains constant. The only way either can hold additional rounds is with a deeper magazine. As to smoothness in feeding, I believe both can feed smoothly and other factors such as feed ramp, rails etc might play a larger role in the smoothness of the feeding of either especially so in a controlled round action. I will agree with you in part that in theory at least, the H&H might just feed better in a push feed action.

    Ruger did a good job supporting the .375 Ruger, but Hornady has abandoned the handloader - "can't keep up with ammo demand since covid" is their pathetic whine. One batch of cases since 2021, and they sold out in a week. Kinda DESTROYS one's likelihood of EVER trying a "New & Improved" cartridge. I like the .375 Ruger enough to have bought a 2nd Ruger Alaskan. I may buy a 3rd one one day - that is how much I like the stainless and overmold combination. I recently glommed onto a Whitworth .375 H&H just to have all my bases covered. $1350 for an unfired copy was worth it.

    Feed reliability is critical when hunting dangerous game. The 375 H&H feeds like butter. The Ruger short fat cartridges were developed to fit in the Standard length action, It's not better it's Cheaper, Take a look at the Mauser Formula on feed reliability ,As in Mag box stack width ,Shell follower's that are cartridge specific, And so on. The Mauser brothers knew a thing or two.

    I hunt with the 375 Ruger a lot here in Alaska, and sometimes in Montana when grizzlies are a factor, or I need to hunt a small tract of land where I need the animal anchored where it stands. It damages less meat than a 270 or a 7mm with light bullets, usually just goes through. Joseph does not like the push-feed rifles available (Mossberg and Savage). These are a good option for a person who needs a big rifle and doesn’t have $2k for a “safari length” action 375 H&H. Most likely a person who needs a 375 will be guided anyway, so the shortcomings of the push-feed are a non issue, as these rifles are usually very reliable and the short-stroking problem can be overcome with enough training.

  • @tacticalskiffs8134
    @tacticalskiffs8134 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    The only real reason to get a 375 Ruger, if you didn't have the new thing hype in your head, would be if it actually fed better, in the rifles we actually have. The dirty secret about the 375s, 416s, etc... is that they are rarely available to mere mortals in an action that they fit properly. They can run well in the actions we have, but that is more like a stunt than fundamental engineering. The idea that a Ruger 375 is a game changer because the stroke is a fraction shorter is silly. In rifles of this kind, job one is reliability. If even with the fat cartridges the 375 Ruger ran better in Ruger rifles than the 375 H&H, that would be an achievement. I don't know that is the case, though. Ruger has sold both cartridges in their 77.
    And if you did want that perfect cartridge that runs perfectly in the actions we actually have, and flattens everything out there, it would be the 9.3x62.

    Hey Joseph, I’ve certainly been eyeing a serious dangerous game rifle for many years. (Since I shot a Idaho Back bear,,, and it ran off the mountain escaping me)
    I’d set my eyes on a 458Lott in a CZ bolt rifle. Then I laid my eyes on the 375 RUGER in a M/77 Guide rifle (same as you’ve mentioned).
    But since I bulged and herniated Several discs in my neck ,,, I’ve been hesitant to set up one.
    I’ve been eyeing a 35Whelen barrel to drop in my Dakota action. Certainly enjoy my 358Win in my RUGER m77 frontier. But it do you think 35Whelen really gives that much more power ? Or take the pain of 375ruger …

    • @BackcountryHuntingPodcast
      @BackcountryHuntingPodcast  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @luckywyatt! Man, I too yearned for a .458 Lott for years. May still get one someday. But in 2009 the very CZ you mention--in .458 Lott--tore the cartilage in my right clavicle. Ever since, I've had to be quite careful with heavy-recoiling rifles.
      For black bear and even grizzly and brown bear, I do think the .35 Whelen is a great option for a low-recoil, hard-hitting sledgehammer of a cartridge. Yes, it's more potent than the .358 Win. Another great option is the 9.3x62 cartridge. It's terrific.
      That said, neither will equal a .375 Ruger. It's in another class.
      Only you (and perhaps your doctor) know your physical limitations well enough to know whether the .375 Ruger will be tolerable. Thankfully, due to the Guide Gun's weight and the muzzle brake, it doesn't kick crazy hard, but it's still pretty spicy.

    The 375 Ruger is a good cartridge, so is the 375 Dakota, but neither is a practical cartridge. You have a very limited supply of rifles and ammo.
    The 375 H&H is available from practically every rifle manufacturer in the world. Ammo and reloading supplies are also available from any number of companies. A 375 H&H rifle also holds it value.
    There is just no practical reason to shoot a 375 Ruger, other than complicating your life just a little more. Ballistically, there just isn’t enough of an advantage.

      I bought a 375 Ruger because I couldn't find a nice H&H in good condition within my budget. If I'd realized how difficult it would be to find brass for it, I might have been a little more patient or found a way to extend my budget. That being said though, I love the rifle and the cartridge. It's gaining ground slowly but surely. If Hornady would make the brass more readily available, I believe it would continue to become more popular. I believe it would've taken off much quicker by now if it wasn't already competing with the other 375's. I can't speak to the Dakota but the H&H is a phenomenal cartridge. I think it's huge success though was largely due to a lack of options in heavy hitting medium recoil cartridges at the time of its release. It really only had to compete with the 9.3x62. The fact that the Ruger has stuck around for now 17 years against well established successful cartridges and rifles speaks volumes in my opinion.

    • @falba1492
      @falba1492 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joshuamckinley8707 There’s no doubt it’s a good cartridge. But it’s a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. If that’s what you have, just buy 200 pieces of brass when available, and you’re pretty much set for life.
      The problem is really only when you leave the US, and there’s no way in hell you’re going to find ammo.
      I reload, but if I get to Africa or Canada, and loose my ammo, I can buy more with no headache.
      Because of investment casting, I’m not a fan of Ruger rifles or revolvers. That and William B. Ruger was an asshöle, who advocated for limited magazine capacity.
      I’m also a big fan of the nine three, which is the ballistic twin of the 35 Whelen. I prefer the nine three for the availability of good quality European rifles. Buy once, cry once.
      Good luck with your 375 Ruger.
