Rheapunzel Essay time: So I really like Kagome as a character. Initially, she seemed very unrealistic to me because she’s too perfect (endless empathy, endless capacity to forgive, etc.). But, throughout the series, she displays jealousy, a short temper, and a debilitating fear of darkness/loneliness. These are all flaws that offset her good traits, which makes her more realistic as a character. At the same time, both good and bad traits balance each other out. For example, she’s jealous of Kikyou and has been known to take out that frustration on Inuyasha, but she also recognizes that as unfair to him and apologizes. The most prominent example of this is when she’s captured by Hakudoshi and is able to resist his attempts to take advantage of this darkness in her heart. She says that, though she is jealous of the relationship between Inuyasha and Kikyou, she can’t bring herself to resent Kikyou for it. She also can’t bring herself to resent Inuyasha for his lingering feelings. She knows herself well enough to know that she’s frustrated with the situation, but that doesn’t offset the feelings she has for the people involved (love for Inuyasha and respect/empathy for Kikyou). Another strength is her modern upbringing. She was raised in a society that encourages women to have a more active role. There’s also more equality (you notice that a lot of characters she snaps at are trying to get her to submit to them or are being jackasses, Koga informing her that she would become “his woman” is one example). She has a strong sense of justice and sees a lot of things as immoral or wrong (Jinenji and the general air of hatred that surrounds half demons). It never occurs to her to look down on anyone. Everyone is equal in her eyes, no matter their station or power levels. This is a very modern idea and is also part of why she’s such a great character. That kind of unbiased attitude (coupled with the will and ability to tell domineering assholes to get lost) is surprisingly rare. The latter can be attributed to her confidence and temper (another case where her good traits and bad traits compliment each other). She also believes in forgiveness and second chances, as evidenced when she befriends Miroku after he stole from them and tried to kill Inuyasha (there’s also Koga, Sango, etc.). This is arguably one of her greatest strengths. It’s also not a common trait, which is clear because of how shocked everyone is when she goes from shouting at people and slapping them (Koga) to befriending them. One problem that a lot of people have with Kagome is that she tells Inuyasha to sit for stupid reasons. They call it abusive and I can’t disagree. But, its also important to note that she’s 15. When I was 15, I would smack people on the shoulder and roughhouse all the time (especially when I liked a guy). Part of it was that I didn’t want to seem weak and feminine. Another part was that I had no idea how to flirt. I have a strong personality like Kagome and subtlety is a lost art on me because I find it exhausting. “Why not just come out and say it?” Is what I think. So I kinda see her telling him to sit for stupid reasons like that. I mean, I know its not okay because it is kinda abusive, but I see where she’s coming from and it makes sense to me because of this. It can also be considered one of her flaws (temper) and makes the target audience relate to her better. Moving on to her relationship with Inuyasha. I can say that this relationship makes perfect sense to me and I see why its so shipable. Kagome doesn’t care that he’s a half demon (modern values, as I mentioned). She treats him like a normal person and other people, seeing this, follow her example and do the same (Kaede, Shippo, Miroku, Sango, etc.). In this way, Kagome gave Inuyasha friends and a place to return to, a home, which he’d never really had before. Kikyou was his first taste of acceptance and he did love her, but she didn’t love him as a half-demon. She wanted him to change for her. To become human for her. You notice that when he and Kikyou were together he was always careful not to be too loud, or uncouth, or aggressive. With Kagome, he doesn’t bother hiding anything. He’s loud, annoying, aggressive, in-your-face. He isn’t holding back. That also transfers over to how he behaves with the others too. He is totally himself when he’s with them and honestly, Kagome gave him that. It’s no wonder that he fell for her. He’s also very protective of Kagome and has been known to be sweet to her (like when he took care of her when she caught a cold). What girl wouldn’t fall for that? Granted, Hojo did something similar, but Kagome and Inuyasha went to hell and back with each other (literally!). When you go through rough times with someone, its almost impossible not to form some kind of bond. Now, I’m not saying that Kikyou didn’t love Inuyasha as much as Kagome, just in a different way. I’m also not defending any of her negative behavior. I’m just saying that this is why I love Kagome as a character and love this pairing. It makes so much sense to me. Sorry for the super long essay, but I just wanted to give my two cents.
Kagome is absolutely amazing!! I don't care what anybody else says about it!! Nobody can change my opinion about her!!
