Super underrated character. I love Gin. He was very important in the save Rukia arc. Bleach is super cool to watch a second time because of the intricate details you can't figure out first time and a lot of foreshadowing.

Fighting a shinigami is not the same as fighting an espada. As evident multiple times throughout the soul society arc, shinigami was a prestigious class compared to espada (Aizen controlled the king of hueco mundo, Tosen cutting the arm of grimmjow). Shinigami seems more intelligent and civilised while the espada (based on Hollows) is more bestial in nature. Ichigo fighting with top Shinigami captains, namely Gin, Shunsui and Aizen, have to contend with good battle tactics and not just pure power displays exhibited by the Hollow based Espada.
When I first saw this fight, I was thinking, “Ok. Ichigo’s clearly no match for Aizen right now. Aizen has ascended to a level where he was able to take on 7 captain-level opponents and a lieutenant-level at once, and now he’s toying with 3 former captains (Kisuke, Yoruichi, and Isshin) who also were the only people in the World of the Living Aizen straight up warned the Espada not to fight. So, maybe Ichigo has a chance against Gin, right? After all, Gin is A LOT closer to Ichigo’s level, right?” But no, come to find out, there is a reason Gin kept out of the fight as long as he did. The fact that he could deflect Ichigo’s first hollow form getsuga tensho with one hand when even Ulqiorra in his base form clearly struggled slightly shows how insanely strong Gin is.
