All I can say is that I have never, ever been disappointed by the Allman Brothers, period. I just don't think it's possible!! This band has always been one of my all time favorites and I can't ever hear enough!! Thanks to ALL who play(ed) in this outstanding and unique group! God Bless, XXOO
Seen it already so many times. 112 views must be me alone. And I seriously could watch this performance 112 more times. No Problem! Thank you for the upload! Love Taj & Allmans. Derek!!!
It's all about the song! And Taj Mahal! Jesse Ed certainly did a great job, but this is the blues - always open to new interpretation. Warren and Derek - and the Allman Brothers Band turn in a fine rendition here! Check out the Derek Trucks Band sometimes! They've been covering this one for a while. Great, great song! Fantastic version!
Incredible performance from all in the video..... As a guitarist, I think J.E. Davis would be quite impressed.... I know I am indeed.....Thanks for the post....!.
Thank you very much. I love Taj Mahal and The Allman Brothers Band's music, and I really like this particular song. Taj Mahal is one of my favorite singers out there, and I really appreciate Derek Truck's playing. I like how he is always so melodic in his soloing.
I love the RnR Circus version and Jesse Ed Davis, but I wouldn't put this version down at all. Warren's not at his best here -- sounds like he's struggling to find his groove, although I like what he's trying to do. Now Derek -- holy sh*t. This is one minute of pure genius. Note choice, phrasing, intonation, GROOVE. Nobody else can do what he's doing here. We're all just arguing our own tastes here. These are mine. I'm damn glad skydogj posted this. It's one of my favorite TH-cam videos ever.
WOW.. I love this.loved it the 1st time i heard Taj sing it on the real thing, but this is great i will say i never thought too much of derek before, BUT, having seen him in these ABB videos from Beacon St, he is fantastic, to me they are a coming out party for Derek..hail the new king course i also think 1 of the best thing ever happened to ABB was Dickie leaving
I've seen both of these guitarists, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease,Jesse Ed Who.Great clip, one of my fave Taj songs.Seen D Trucks band play this song, too.Thanx,a classic.Gonna see Bonnie and Taj in Sept.
Y know for old schoolers, we know a recording trick that goes back at least as far as Howlin Wolf. Vocals would shift into a timbre derived from the mic bluesers used for harmonicas. Later that became a standard tone (for example it can be heard on Little Feat / Lowell George recs----what's that track where LG cites "sore displeased" ? ---- & Capt Beefheart used it , too). //// Note how at 4:50 Taj flips N2 that tone just by vocal skill.
It's funny, just before watching this I was listening to Taj's cover of Feats Don't Fail Me Now (which is great) and he does it right there, too! And I thought "It must be like an homage to Lowell who was a big Howlin' Wolf fan" and then I come here and you put it all together for me
Whoever thinks this version is better than the one on Rock and Roll Circus has got $hI# for brains - I have watched that one dozens of times and could not even get through this one once!
I've been a Taj fan since he was a tall lanky fellow in L.A. still love his music. Been an Allman Bros fan for a long time. One question though, why are they still called the Allman Brothers Band? Perhaps there's an original or 2 but still? Anyway these guys still carry on the spirit. I presume that's Derek Trucks on slide. He's the nephew (I believe of Butch) but he's not with them any more. Just wondering, you understand.
Derek Trucks plays any damm guitar he wants. Come on you guys. Mere mortals putting way too much thought into this. This young man is a legend already...
So when my group played we played Leaving Trunk. we did open for the Allman Bros. at a place called the Place. North Mia.. my groups name just in case SKIN. A lot of Taj. Blues #1. Never forget. Love it.
@skydogj as a musician and music lover I just have to agree with ya my friend. and Socrates dude, this dudes play with they heart, carppy "Rock" bands like My Chemical Romances and shits like that are those who play with money. all pure Blues and Rock players do it with the heart. listen to Warren Haynes man and the other guitar dude with the slide, if thats bank show me heart
@socrates1818 You tell 'em Socrates! These guys don't know the meaning of soul. There is nothing that compares to the raunchy sexual swagger of Taj in the R&RC version. Jesse was clearly in a parallel universe, and his guitar was a bit subdued, but I'd trade a thousand decibels of Trucks for a couple of minutes of Jesse scratching away. And don't forget the drums and bass on the R&RC. Really great. It's a matter of taste. Some people have taste, others don't.
Yes momma, don't let yo huband catch me here ("Back Door Man")...now people this is just for entertainment purposes, that ain't a way to live (but sure makes a darn fine blues song)!
That's a bit rough! I agree that the Rock and Roll Circus version is beyond compare. It's superb in every respect. But you have to remember that was 40 yrs earlier. I don't think you can knock a great band simply because they are successful. They have money in the bank because people want to see them and hear their records. I think the two guitars in this track are pretty good, even if they don't have the same scratchy feel as Jesse Ed Davis. Get more philosophical, Socrates!
I also prefer the 1968 version to this one, but it's only because that was Taj in his prime. Love the Allmans though, and the Beacon show when Eric Clapton sat in last year was the tits
Holy moly! Haynes+Trucks+Taj. It don't get much better, folks!
This song is an emotional timeout I need. I go back to it because I love its simplicity and overall shaggy dog style
All I can say is that I have never, ever been disappointed by the Allman Brothers, period. I just don't think it's possible!! This band has always been one of my all time favorites and I can't ever hear enough!! Thanks to ALL who play(ed) in this outstanding and unique group! God Bless, XXOO
we will never see mushrooms on the screen or stage like those old days
Great music. No 40 dancers and lyrics that turn your brain to mush. Great musicians making great music.
What a great guest appearance of Taj. Warren and Derek are both killer on this track.
DAMN LOVE IT! He still sounds amazing!
This is Heaven to me.
Allman's have always had the tight band and amazing guitars.
Even In 2021 He Still Rocks!..Love U Taj!!! Tu Meke!!!
Seen it already so many times. 112 views must be me alone. And I seriously could watch this performance 112 more times. No Problem! Thank you for the upload! Love Taj & Allmans. Derek!!!

Haynes' smile after that Howlin Wolf part made my day.
People!! Derek and Warren BOTH are outstanding guitar players and something else......Warren can SING!
Hell yeah...two of my favorites!
Wow Leavin trunk was one of my bands best songs to play. We played it pretty good in the key of G.
Incredible performance from all in the video..... As a guitarist, I think J.E. Davis would be quite impressed.... I know I am indeed.....Thanks for the post....!.
What a groove! And that smile of Warren Haynes! Its seems they really had fun :)
“Sounds like me on guitar here”, I proffered humbly…
thanks derek... your music has a lotta soul.

Awesome
Taj sounds amazing

Pure sweetness and soul coming from these great musicians.

Fantastic. Thanks for the upload
Sweet video, love this song! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting, shows he still has it for sure :-)
The vocal needs to be amplified more. I love this song, especially Taj's version on his "Best Of. . " album.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Esto es música
A great Jam!!!
Can Warren bend a string or two or can't he....that 335 was sizzlin'!
Whoever thinks this version is better than the one on Rock and Roll Circus has got $hI# for brains - I have watched that one dozens of times and could not even get through this one once!

So when my group played we played Leaving Trunk. we did open for the Allman Bros. at a place called the Place. North Mia.. my groups name just in case SKIN. A lot of Taj. Blues #1. Never forget. Love it.

love the allman bros, derek, taj, and warren. great work bothers!

It's a matter of taste. Some people have taste, others don't.
you think this is good on youtube, you should seen it live dude, it smoked like a locomotive!!!!
He was born with the rhythm firmly embedded in his body; what a performer
Just to enjoy, God bless
@skydogj I AGREE WITH YOU 100%.
Butch can rock it
Wish I did
That's how you do it
Good lawd. Dirtay' fiya.
I always love it when special needs folks are able to post
The original album version with Jesse Ed Davis beats this version hands down. Less is more as they say!
Yes momma, don't let yo huband catch me here ("Back Door Man")...now people this is just for entertainment purposes, that ain't a way to live (but sure makes a darn fine blues song)!
That's a bit rough!

I wonder who filmed this / great camera work
No one plays guitar on this song like Jesse Ed Davis. Not even Warren and Derek.
Anybody else got chopped and underwater sounds???
I also prefer the 1968 version to this one, but it's only because that was Taj in his prime. Love the Allmans though, and the Beacon show when Eric Clapton sat in last year was the tits
ya know Taj is the Geo Clinton of the blues............just sayin.........
I like that Darryl.
clinton has nothing to do with the blues except to make other people miserable by bombing them
Ted, Y' dont know who Clinton is, eh ?
+ Darryl Weaver THANK YOU> You are so right! I overdosed on cannabis concentrate ! it's a case of Horribly, Terribly, Legally Blonde.
2:27
