- Cliff Burton Tribute - Special 3 Songs Medley! For Cliff Burton Day, I want to play something really special. Something that reminds me of Cliff Burton. I am going to play 3 special Metallica songs: Starting with Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth), moving on to Orion, and then ending with To Live Is To Die. So, I will be playing my favourite bits from these songs as a tribute to Mr Cliff Burton.
As a proud recipient of Cliff Burton Scholarship 2022, it is my absolute honour to be performing on the Cliff Burton Day show! Learning these 3 songs made me look more closely at the Metallica songs in Cliff Burton's era, and I noticed how different they sounded musically before and after the Cliff Burton era! As much as they have their thrash metal intensity, I also felt they incorporated a lot of sad melodies, harmonised guitars and beautiful musical elements in their songs that really moves us emotionally. I can feel the melancholy in the songs especially when I play songs like Orion, Fade to black, To live is to die and others. I also got that feeling when playing some of the older James Hetfield's solos. For me, this shows the impact Cliff Burton had in their music creation. Experiencing this myself by learning to play their songs is itself a journey. I think this special combination is what made Metallica "Metallica".
Cliff Burton was one of the main reason I started playing guitar since I was 6 years old and For Whom The Bell Tolls was the first song I ever learnt. 3 Years later I never thought I will be hearing from the Cliff Burton Family themselves and being awarded the prestigious scholarship. It felt like I got the blessings from Cliff Burton himself. So it is my absolute honour to be playing these special songs as a tribute to honour Mr Cliff Burton legacy today!

The first Metallica concert I ever saw I believe I was 21 and Iit was the Justice tour and I got to stand right in front of Kirk, about 15 feet away, for the whole concert!My favorite band and I was so ADRENALIZED!!!

I'm speechless 🙊 Maya. You are just TOO good 👍 ✨️ You were born to play! Cliff will be EXTREMELY proud of your tribute. I started to cry a bit but when you played 'To live is to die' that was it. That track is SOO sad and powerful/overwhelming. The A minor 3/4 part is similar to the Romeo and Juliet theme. Though of course that is in 4/4 time signature. Thanks also for your eloquent explanation at the end. Bass was my 2nd instrument and I've never had any effects on bass. So I was just wondering if you could possibly tell me what effects you were using and what bass? I play a 5 string Warwick vampyre myself. Infinite ♾️ gratitude and blessings. Jay 🇬🇧
THANK YOU!! I understand EXACTLY what you mean. The solo from To Live Is To die is so so so sad and melodious! Also when I found out that this song was the last song ever that Cliff Burton had songwriting credit to, it made it even more sadder. And then the words he wrote (which I read at the end) gave me the chills! Thanks for telling me the similarity with Romeo and Juliet theme. I am very happy you experienced the same emotions like I did through this video. Also the harmonised guitar parts are my next favourite. They sounded so good and I am very happy the way it turned out in the end. 😊
With the Bass effects, for the clean ones I just used an EQ pedal to adjust to my katana amp since I don't have a bass amp and also added a little bit of reverb to it. For the dirty sound on Bass, I used a Distortion pedal, a Noise Gate and EQ pedal. I used Line6 PodGo for all of this. With the bass guitar, I have the Yamaha TRBX174. It's a low end bass guitar but it is my first so it is good enough for now. But the 5 string Warwick vampyre sounds super awesome! Enjoy! 😃
@MayaNeelakantan Thanks for all the info 🙏👍I'm listening 🎶 to Blackened as I type. I've not heard of that bass but it sounded great considering especially it's 'low end'. Another testament to your skills! That's interesting you don't have a bass amp, coz I was once told in a music shop you can't put a bass amp through a guitar amp coz it could blow up. However you CAN put a guitar 🎸 through a bass amp. However this WAS at least 20 years ago I was told this and equipment has changed A LOT since then. For example - the demon drive pedals I use on drums are still a relatively new bit of equipment and infinitely faster than any chain driven pedals due to the absence of resistance on the beater because it has skate board ninja bearings on the drive shaft. Anyway - that's clever and cool you found a setting via the pedals so that it would be accepted by guitar amp. Enjoy your weekend 🙏
@@Ma93nta174 You are right. I read too that it is not safe to play Bass on a guitar amp since the bass frequency is on a whole different level and it can blow up the speaker. So when I connect to my katana 50, I try not to crank up the volume too high. The max I go is half way. Most of the time, I leave it more than quarter and less than half. Also, I use the EQ pedal and add some low cuts so the amp is not pushed too much. Seems to work so far. I also have different settings for clean and the distortion channel. Luckily when I use the distortion in bass, most of the notes are higher strings so its not too far from a low end of a guitar freq. It's still all an experiment for me hoping I don't break my amp. 🤣
@MayaNeelakantan Yes good thinking. If in doubt turn the volume down whilst experimenting with settings. I'd imagine that the pedals help to take some of the stress off the amp but yes be careful 😉
